A strange bird.

Raining here and I pulled this half of a helicopter out of my files to show you. I want to start building my own one.
Imagine a ride in this!

That looks like an autogyro where the top rotor is not powered. The one at the rear pushes it along. James Bond flew on in You Only Live Twice.

Thank you Sir Steve and I am sure it is something similar, but I will investigate.
I haven't seen the movie.

It's a long time since I've seen it, but I found this.

Those things can't hover, but if the engine cuts out they should drift down like a sycamore seed. Not that I've been in one.

How much would one of those cost?

Thank you for the vote and I will ask the airfield manager tomorrow.

just curious because full sized helicopters are vey expensive - nz has the highest number of helicopters per head of any country - i've been a few old four seatrs and they are small enough to be scarey

are you going to get one?

It looks pretty cool, but not exactly affordable is it?

Nope, I can never get one my friend, but I can always try to build one.
As you know, we run a charity and there is no money for personal likes.

This aircraft is a gyrocopter, and this one specifically is a Magni M24 Orion.
Just like @steevc mentioned in his comment, the rotor is not powered and always on autorotation whereas the propeller at the back is providing the thrust for the forward motion.

Great and thank you kindly for the information.
Do you know what the price of the gyrocopter is?

This specific one is about USD 100k I believe

USD 100K would be more than ZAR 1 million in our country.
Really expensive.

Thank you kindly for this and at last my wife reminded me to power up on the 1st.
We would be lost if we didn't have women around us 😜.

How much would it cost to build?

  • And would you use a kit?

This is what I have to figure out, as new they cost about USA 100,000K.

Yes, if I can get a kit, I will certainly use it.
As kids we used to make our own go-karts and the wheels were old car ball bearings.
If one can survive that, one can survive anything :)
