You Still Have Teeth

Say cheese.

I never needed any reason to smile and I laugh at the minuscule of all causes; It doesn’t take much effort. I can barely keep a straight face for too long; but I know for sure, I’ll always appreciate the next laugh. Maybe you don’t feel the same way; maybe you prefer not to show your emotions. The life lessons or philosophical quotes about what you should do or how you should be are pretty much one click away; that is totally up to you. You know what you should be doing and either you’re doing it or avoiding it and that too by choice. You can laugh or you don’t. Yes, no one can laugh or smile continuously 24/7; it’s impossible.

Of course you remember all those quotes about life being short and we’re never getting out of it alive and so and so; they’re always there at the back of your head. We try to act upon those slogans or mottos or life hacks but soon we fall off the track; worry and depression are something that we seem to can’t get rid of. Our life is already riddled with too many struggles and obstacles that restrain us. A moment of joy is scarce and if we do get one, I guess it worthless to waste that moment to stay numb. Being numb probably is the worst emotion that we come across. It feels as if one is devoid of emotions, and we all face it from time to time. It’s a helpless feeling; drowning in the abyss. Hoping to get out of that situation, we look for all sorts of solutions.

But remember this, a smile is the best medicine. If you see someone having a bad day, you cheer them up and try to put a smile on their face. We smile not to appear constricted to strangers. Our friends make us laugh and even an insignificant encounter becomes a priceless memory. When you realize you made a mistake, you can laugh over it for a few seconds and make necessary changes. Also, it is said that a smile is the best accessory that we wear. Life will always throw us curve balls and we face them boldly, with a vibrant smile on our face.

I can talk a lot about worries and stress; my dark circles would speak out even louder. Possibly that is the primary reason I’m writing about why it is important to smile or laugh or be happy. Sometimes I don’t find a reason to be happy about; imagine that from the point of view of a person who loves to laugh. The entire world puts a sepia filter like those old movies (although those movies are great) and everything seems bleak. Staring blankly at everything or forcing a smile to not appear rude, been there and done that, still doing it sometimes. Not all days are similar; I presume it depends on our mood too, how we feel. If you had to choose between feeling blank and sad, what would you choose. We can barely control our emotions, can’t we? Suppose there’s a remote somewhere with which we can control and drive our emotions, many will pick that.

A few months ago, some of us were writing about small things in life; just the tiny stuff that contented us or made us smile. Pick a few things and write them down; it will work as a constant reminder about the things that we value most in our lives. Possibly that will give us direction to which way we want to go when we lose ourselves. Just the things that bring a smile to your face, no matter how minuscule they are. All it takes is a little effort and small things to make us smile.

I did read somewhere (don't remember where though 😅) that research has shown that even if you don't feel happy and you try to "force" a smile, it tricks the mind (something about the muscle and brain connection) and eventually a happy hormone gets released, which stimulates you to feel better. I can attest to it, because I used to try it out.

As a teenager I also made funny faces in the mirror the morning when I got ready for school, which jump started my day in a happier mood. I stopped though, but it really helped.

even if we don't try to force a smile, we end up doing the same, thinking it would bring in some change... sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't... I still make funny faces and act rather dramatical just to amuse myself

Hahaha yes, we need to be friends to ourselves first, because if we don't who will.

I still write, think and enjoy small things in life. Big things in life are either boring or non-existent

big things in life are boring and/or non-existent... they don't mount up to what actually matters in life
