Last Sunday was International Mother's Day and for this occasion I wanted to give a special gift to my mother.

It was something that I had been doing very carefully for several days so that she would not see what I was working on. We live together and I had to hide in my room to be able to make her present. I wanted it to be a surprise, because of the meaning and the memories it would bring her.

In order to remember and pay homage to the memory of my late grandmother, who was a mother to me, I recreated one of the creations to which my grandmother was accustomed.

It turns out that I had the need to use the cardboard of a box and I had saved the one from my television. When I took it out, I had stored (among other things) a nylon that I use to preserve this type of equipment, which is like a fine foam.

This is a decorative cushion that I made with recycled material. My grandmother made several of these and marketed them. These creations were her livelihood for some time and I am proud to have had such a talented and hard-working person in my life.

I was still a child, but I remember helping her cut the strips of material to make the cushions and I felt useful to be able to support her in what she was doing. I was happy with each finished product and always liked the last one better than the previous one.

I gave all the mothers this gift that I made with so much love for mine through the inspiration and the memory of another mother: my grandmother.

Below I will show you the process and the materials used.

• Hand sewing needle
• Scissors
• Cutter
• Ruler
• Cardboard
• Biros

First I made the design of a heart on the cardboard, marking it with a biro and then cut it out. I also made a smaller one to fit inside the larger heart. Then I marked four large and two small hearts on the material.

With the help of the ruler and the cutter I made strips of the remaining material of the same width as the ruler (approximately 4 centimetres) along its entire length.

On two tops (putting the double material for each one) that I would later join together and starting with the smaller heart, I made curls with the strips and pinned it on the edge of the figure that I then placed in the centre of the heart. Then on the edge of the big heart I also fixed curls, leaving a space of about one centimetre to sew with the back heart, to which I also put a row of curls.

With the two tops finished, one with a smaller heart which would be the front and the other the back I sewed them together, leaving a reasonable opening so I could slip my hand in with the stuffing.

I made the stuffing with the leftover material, after I had finished shaping the cushion. I made some very small cuts in this material to make it easier to fit it inside the cushion. When I had the desired filling, I finished sewing the two covers together.

This is how the cushion made with this recycled material that I gave to my mother on this date of world celebration came out.

Maybe the result is not as nice as the souvenir that was left to my grandmother, but it was the way I found to pay tribute to her work as a mother and grandmother for this step of my existence.

The delivery was made and my mother was delighted. She immediately told me: "You made a cushion just like the ones mima made"....

I would like to take this opportunity to say that I have enjoyed the whole process, because I have relived the beautiful moments I spent with my grandmother helping her creations that she loved so much.

I hope it will serve as an inspiration to those who, like me, have that restlessness of always wanting to make something useful with disposable material.

El pasado domingo se celebró el día internacional de la madres y para esta ocasión quise hacer un regalo especial a mi madre.

Fue algo que hacía varios días venía ejecutando con mucha cautela para que ella no viera en lo que estaba trabajando. Vivimos juntas y tuve que esconderme en mi habitación para poder hacer su regalo. Quería que fuera sorpresa, por el significado y los recuerdos que le traerían.

Con motivo de recordar y homenajear la memoria de mi difunta abuela, que fue una madre para mí, recreé una de las creaciones a las cuales mi abuela nos tenía acostumbrados.

Resulta que tuve la necesidad de usar el cartón de una caja y tenía guardada la de mi televisor. Cuando la saqué tenía guardado (dentro de otras cosas) un nylon que trae como preservo este tipo de equipos que es como una espuma fina.

Se trata de la confección de un cojín decorativo que realicé con material reciclado. Mi abuela hizo varios ejemplares de estos y llegó a comercializarlos. Estas creaciones le representaron sustento durante algún tiempo y yo me siento orgullosa de haber tenido a una persona tan talentosa y luchadora en mi vida.

Yo era aún una niña, pero recuerdo que la ayudaba a cortar las tiras del material para hacer los cojines y me sentía útil al poder apoyarla en lo que hacía. Me sentía feliz con cada producto terminado y siempre el último me gustaba más que el anterior.

Llegue a todas las madres este regalo que con tanto amor hice para la mía a través de la inspiración y el recuerdo de otra madre: mi abuela.

A continuación les mostraré el proceso y los materiales empleados.

• Aguja de coser a mano
• Tijeras
• Cutter
• Regla
• Cartulina
• Bolígrafo

Primeramente realicé el diseño de un corazón sobre la cartulina, marcando con bolígrafo y luego lo corté. Hice también uno más pequeño que cupiera dentro del corazón más grande. Después marqué sobre el material cuatro corazones grandes y dos pequeños.

Con la ayuda de la regla y el cutter hice franjas del material restante del mismo ancho de la regla (aproximadamente 4 centímetros) a toda su longitud.

En dos tapas (poniendo el material doble para cada una) que luego uniría y comenzando por el corazón más pequeño, fui haciendo rizos con las tiras y fijándola en el borde de la figura que luego coloqué en el centro del corazón. Luego en el borde del corazón grande fijé también rizos, dejando un espacio aproximado de un centímetro para coser con el corazón trasero al cual también le puse una fila de rizos.

Con las dos tapas terminadas, una con corazón más pequeño que sería la parte de alante y la otra la parte de atrás las cosí entre sí, dejando una abertura razonable para que pudiera introducir mi mano con el relleno.

El relleno lo hice con el material sobrante, luego que concluí la conformación del cojín. Hice unos cortes bien pequeños de este material para que me facilitara acomodarlo bien en su interior. Cuando obtuve el relleno deseado terminé de cerrar las dos tapas con la costura.

Así quedó conformado el cojín realizado con este material reciclado que regalé a mi madre en esta fecha de celebración mundial.

Tal vez no sea tan bonito el resultado como resuerdo que le quedaban a mi abuela, pero fue la forma que encontré para un poco homenajear su obra de madre y abuela por este paso de mi existir.

La entrega fue hecha y mi mamá quedó encantada. Enseguida me dijo: "Hiciste un cojín igual a los que hacía mima"...

Por mi parte aprovecho para decir que me he disfrutado todo el proceso, pues he revivido lindos momentos que pasé junto a mi abuela en ayuda de sus creaciones que tanto le gustaba.

Espero que les sirva de inspiración a quienes como yo tienen esa inquietud de siempre querer hacer algo útil con material desechable.
