Space opera: When the stars are the protagonists | Sci-fi | Review

Who is not familiar with productions like Star Wars or Star-Trek? Intergalactic adventures, spaceships capable of traveling faster than light, extraterrestrial races, love, war, diplomacy, and other things can be found in this fantastic literary and cinematographic genre.

¿Quién no está familiarizado con producciones como Star Wars o Star-Trek? Aventuras intergalácticas, naves espaciales capaces de viajar más rápido que la luz, razas extraterrestres, amor, guerra, diplomacia y demás cosas las podremos conseguir en este fantástico género literario y cinematográfico.

I got my first adventure of the style through the Isaac Asimov Foundation saga. I marveled at the concept of psychohistory, a science able of predicting the future impact of our society on a large scale thanks to complex mathematical calculations. Asimov was definitely a genius and one of my favorite authors and, with Foundation he achieved by far one of the best science fiction stories of all time and was a great influence on other writers.

The distant future that Foundation tells us is amazing. Humanity is spread throughout the galaxy and there is an empire (based on the Roman Empire) that establishes law, economics, and diplomacy. According to Hari Seldon, creator of psychohistory, by analyzing statistical data he predicts the imminent collapse of this entire empire and the consequences of this I leave it to you to keep in mind when reading the book. This saga is fundamental in space opera and in general terms for any lover of science fiction.

Mi primera aventura del estilo la conseguí a través de la saga de Fundación de Isaac Asimov. Me maravillaba el concepto de la psicohistoria, una ciencia capaz de predecir el impacto futuro de nuestra sociedad a gran escala gracias a cálculos matemáticos complejos. Asimov fue definitivamente un genio y uno de mis autores favoritos y con Fundación logro con creces una de las mejores historias de ciencia ficción de todos los tiempos y fue una gran influencia para otros escritores.

El futuro tan distante que nos narra en Fundación es asombroso. La humanidad está extendida por toda la galaxia y existe un imperio (basado en el imperio romano) que establece la ley, la economía y la diplomacia. Según Hari Seldon, creador de la psicohistoria, al analizar datos estadísticos predice el colapso eminente de todo este imperio y las consecuencias de esto se las dejo a ustedes para que las tengan en mente a la hora de leer el libro. Esta saga es fundamental en la opereta espacial y en términos generales para cualquier amante de la ciencia ficción.

Another masterpiece is The Hyperion Cantos, an epic saga with many connected adventures and parallel stories. The existence of humanity is played on a planet called Hyperion and a group of travelers selected due to their past sent on a pilgrimage to The Tombs of Time, a place where time is distorted thanks to an entity capable of managing it.

Throughout history, travelers narrate their past experiences trying to find out what they were selected for. I must clarify that all the stories could be taken as a separate book, none of them seemed boring to me and it's because The Hyperion Cantos goes beyond science fiction, it's an adventure saga but in space, where we can find even stories based on beings with artificial intelligence, powerful cosmic entities, inhospitable and wildlands, religion, terror and a thousand other things. In general terms, it is a very complete saga that you shouldn't miss.

Otra obra maestra es Los cantos de Hyperion, una saga épica con muchas aventuras e historias paralelas que se conectan entre sí. La existencia de la humanidad se juega en un planeta llamado Hyperion y un grupo de viajeros seleccionados debido a su pasado son enviados en peregrinación a Las Tumbas del tiempo un lugar donde el tiempo se distorsiona gracias a una entidad capaz de manejarlo.

A lo largo de toda la historia los viajeros van narrando sus experiencias pasadas tratando de conocer para que fueron seleccionados. Debo aclarar que todas las historias podrían tomarse como un libro aparte, ninguna me pareció aburrida y es que Los cantos de Hyperion va más allá de ciencia ficción, es una saga de aventuras pero en el espacio, donde podremos encontrar hasta historias basadas en seres con inteligencia artificial, entidades cósmicas poderosas, tierras inhóspitas y salvajes, religión, terror y mil cosas más. En términos generales es una saga muy completa que no deberías dejar pasar.

One of the most complex works I have ever read was Ian Leckie's story, Ancilliary Justice. A writer who showed the world that women are capable of producing great works within the genre. Winner of all the important awards for science fiction (Hugo, Locus, and Nebula) makes us see this is a trilogy of excellent quality.

Hundreds of years in the future there is an empire called Radch that has a colonialist or expansionist attitude, regardless of the cultures, ecosystems and way of life of beings from other planets, they invade and spread. The empire uses spaceships with artificial intelligence and here is the most interesting thing about the novel. The protagonist of this book is a spaceship or rather a fragment of consciousness of the spaceship.

Spaceships as I said before are possessors of artificial intelligence and take individuals as segments of their own consciousness. Taking this into account, an artificial intelligence can be in several parts at the same time because it has different individuals.

One of these individuals is Breq, a part of a spaceship that was destroyed called Justice of Loren. The narration of the entire book is composed without any sexual gender, since this fact is not recognized in the empire but other races do.

A complex book with an originality that has rarely been seen. I must admit that in space opera one frequently falls into cliche and repetitions but in this case the whole plot is spectacular and this is one of my most valued modern finds.

Una de las obras más complejas que he leído fue Justicia Auxiliar de Ian Leckie. Una escritora que le demostró al mundo que las mujeres son capaces de producir grandes obras dentro del género. Ganadora de todos los premios importantes destinados a la ciencia ficción (Hugo, Locus y Nebula) nos hace ver que es una trilogía de excelente calidad.

Cientos de años en el futuro existe un imperio llamado Radch que tiene una actitud colonialista o expansionista, sin importarle las culturas, ecosistema y modo de vivir de los seres de otros planetas, invaden y se establecen. El imperio usa naves espaciales con inteligencia artificial y he aquí lo más interesante de la novela. El/la protagonista de este libro es una nave espacial o mejor dicho un fragmento de consciencia de la nave espacial.

Las naves espaciales como dije anteriormente son poseedoras de inteligencia artificial y toman individuos como segmentos de su propia consciencia. Tomando en cuenta esto, una inteligencia artificial puede estar en varias partes al mismo tiempo por poseer distintos individuos.

Uno de estos individuos es Breq, una parte de una nave espacial que se destruyó llamada Justicia de Loren. La narración de todo el libro está compuesta sin ningún género sexual, ya que en el imperio no se reconoce este hecho pero si otras razas.

The plot is quite complete, with unprecedented detail and structure. Each diplomatic, religious and cultural aspect is narrated to perfection, literally creating its own Universe that has nothing to envy Star Wars, on the contrary it's a much more mature story in every sense but at the same time requires an effort on the part of the reader at the time of memorizing the number of characters and places in which the story is set.

In my opinion this is the best space opera story of all time and I recommend it with my eyes closed.

La trama es bastante completa, contando con un detallismo y una estructura sin precedentes. Cada aspecto diplomático, religioso y cultural es narrado a la perfección creando literalmente un Universo propio que no tiene nada que envidiarle a Star Wars, por lo contrario es una historia mucho más madura en todo sentido pero a la vez requiere de un esfuerzo por parte del lector al momento de memorizar la cantidad de personajes y lugares en que se ambienta la historia.

En mi opinión esta es la mejor historia de space opera de todos los tiempos y la recomiendo con los ojos cerrados.

Another novel I could recommend is Tau Zero by Poul Anderson, who tells us about the adventure of a group of people when they learn that their spaceship loses its way after losing the brake mechanism. The theory of relativity here is a key factor and scientific detail as well. Losing braking ability the spacecraft gets closer and closer to the speed of light causing time to pass much faster outside the spacecraft. The long-term consequences of this are narrated from a technical point of view but also emotional in certain cases.

Otra novela que podría recomendar es Tau Zero de Poul Anderson que nos cuenta la aventura de un grupo de personas al conocer que su nave espacial pierde el rumbo al perder el mecanismo de freno. La teoría de la relatividad aquí es un factor clave y el detallismo científico también. Al perder la capacidad de freno la nave espacial se acerca cada vez más a la velocidad de la luz haciendo que el tiempo pase mucho más rápido fuera de la nave espacial. Las consecuencias a largo plazo de esto son narradas bajo un punto de visto técnico pero también emocional en ciertos casos.

Gateway by Frederik Pohl, plunges us into a world where there are spaceships able of interstellar travel but the technology is so advanced that they can't understand it perfectly. The mechanisms of these ships can be activated but not the place of destination, so that the crew doesn't return home frequently. The psychological consequences of being selected as a crew member are shown in a rather original way.

In short, a genre with a huge legacy, with many interesting titles that send us to the ends of the Universe and make us wonder at the possibilities that interstellar travel can have for us as a species. These novels develop our imagination, creativity and scientific speculation, imagining worlds outside our own, possible technologies and contact with extraterrestrial beings. The consequences of all this could be very good, making humans have a special shine throughout the Universe, but they could also be dire, leading to destruction.

Portico de Frederik Pohl, nos sumerge en un mundo donde se encuentran unas naves espaciales capaces de hacer viajes interestelares pero la tecnología es tan avanzada que no logran entenderla a la perfección. Los mecanismos de estas naves pueden ser activados pero no así el lugar de destino haciendo que los tripulantes no vuelvan a casa frecuentemente. Las consecuencias psicológicas al ser seleccionado como tripulante son mostradas de una manera bastante original.

En resumen un género con un legado enorme, con muchos títulos interesantes que nos envían a los confines del Universo y nos hacen asombrarnos de las posibilidades que los viajes interestelares pueden tener para nosotros como especie. Estas novelas nos desarrollan la imaginación, la creatividad y la especulación científica, imaginando mundos fuera del nuestro, tecnologías posibles y un contacto con seres extraterrestres. Las consecuencias de todo esto podrían ser muy buenas haciendo que el humano tenga un brillo especial en todo el Universo pero también podrían ser nefastas llevándonos a la destrucción.
