SANTA MARIA A PIE’ DI CHIENTI ABBEY- MARCHIGIANA ROMANESQUE CHURCH - ITALY

today I show you a jewel of Italian Romanesque art. The abbey of S.Maria a Piè di Chienti, and we will look at it from the historical and architectural point of view. This church is very unique and particular and is very interesting from an architectural point of view.
It is in Montecosaro Scalo in the province of Macerata in the Marche region.

oggi vi mostro un gioiello dell'arte romanica italiana. L'abbazia di S.Maria a Piè di Chienti, e la vedremo dal punto di vista storico e architettonico. Questa chiesa è molto singolare e particolare ed è molto interessante dal punto di vista architettonico.
Si trova a Montecosaro Scalo in provincia di Macerata nelle Marche.

Already existing since 936 as possessions of the abbey of Farfa, it was rebuilt under the direction of the abbot Adenolfo starting from 1125.
We are in the XI th and XII th centuries the historical concept of Europe has not yet been born but a separation between West and East, that which culminates in the religious field with the Eastern schism, that is, the separation between the Greek and Roman churches, in the politc field with the Crusades.
Within ancient documentes it was often called S.Maria in Insula, that is, S.Maria Island, because of around land, that was marshy because of of the flooding of the nearby river, but also called SS.Annunziata and it is on the left bank of the river near the mouth.

Già esistente dal 936 come possedimento dell'abbazia di Farfa, fu ricostruita sotto la direzione dell'abate Adenolfo a partire dal 1125.
Siamo nei secoli XI° e XII° non è ancora nato il concetto storico di Europa ma una separazione tra Occidente e Oriente, quella che culmina in campo religioso con lo scisma d'Oriente, cioè la separazione tra le chiese greca e romana , in campo politico con le Crociate.
Nei documenti antichi era spesso chiamata S.Maria in Insula, cioè Isola di S.Maria, per via del terreno circostante, che era acquitrinoso a causa dell'esondazione del vicino fiume, ma anche chiamata SS.Annunziata e si trova sul riva sinistra del fiume vicino alla foce.

Externally it appears to us as a very austere early medieval monastery, typical of the Romanesque style, very simple.

Esternamente ci appare come un monastero altomedievale molto austero, tipico dello stile romanico, molto semplice.

The facade very simple preserves a 12th century sundial on the right margin.

La facciata molto semplice conserva sul margine destro una meridiana del XII secolo.

The apse is very interesting because it presents a complex interplay of small apses that open to flower.
Very impressive for those arriving from the back!!!

L'abside è molto interessante perché presenta un complesso gioco di piccole absidi che si aprono a fiore.
Molto suggestivo per chi arriva da dietro!!!

The interior has two superimposed floors with women's galleries, a trussed ceiling and small windows - single lancet windows and mullioned windows -in alabaster.
The half-light hangs over everything, mingling with a penetrating smell of antiquity.

L'interno è a due piani sovrapposti con i matronei, soffitto a capriate e piccole finestre - monofore e bifore - in alabastro.
La penombra incombe su tutto, mescolandosi a un penetrante odore di antichità.

The three naves with arches marked by pilasters are in the purest Lombard style and the apse is in perfect Burgundian style.

Le tre navate con archi scanditi da lesene sono in puro stile lombardo e l'abside è in perfetto stile borgognone.

The holy water font capital located to the right of the entrance is supported by a fragment of a Roman column.

Il capitello acquasantiera situato alla destra dell'ingresso è sorretto da un frammento di colonna romana.

This is a cross carved in stone for the consecration of the church

Questa è una croce scolpita nella pietra per la consacrazione della chiesa

In the lower church we find a wooden crucifix from 1300

Nella chiesa inferiore troviamo un crocifisso ligneo del 1300

Below there is a game of arches and cross vaults that lead us to the altar, and behind the apse formed by many small niches that seem to form a flower. Very special!!!
For this reason it is one of the most interesting churches in the area.

Quì sotto c'è un gioco di archi e volte a crocera che ci conducono all'altare, e dietro l'abside formata da tante piccole nicchie che sembrano formare un fiore. Molto particolare!!!
Per questo è una delle chiese più interessanti della zona.

The sculptures on the altar should also be from the mid-15th century, in polychrome terracotta depictis the announcing angel and the Virgin.
A time the wall of the church were entirely covered with frescoes but the high humidity of the place
has damaged most of them.

Della metà del XV secolo dovrebbero essere anche le sculture sull'altare, in terracotta policroma raffiguranti l'angelo annunziante e la Vergine.
Un tempo le pareti della chiesa erano interamente ricoperte di affreschi ma l'elevata umidità del luogo ha danneggiato la maggior parte di loro.

Upstairs there are more frescoes than below. In a Gothic arch, on the right wall of the apse there is a frescoe of the madonna with Child between musician angels by the Master of Offida from the second half of the 14th century.

Al piano superiore ci sono più affreschi che sotto. In un arco gotico, sulla parete destra dell'abside si trova un affresco della Madonna con Bambino tra angeli musicanti del Maestro di Offida della seconda metà del XIV secolo.

More interesting are the paintings of apse from 1447 but of unknown author, there are childhood scene that culminate in the enthroned Christ enclosed in almond.

Più interessanti sono le pitture dell'abside del 1447 ma di autore ignoto, vi sono scene d'infanzia che culminano nel Cristo in trono racchiuso in mandorla.
