In 1774 Johann von Goethe wrote The Sorrows of Young Werther, one of the most important novels of the period. In a way, your story recalls that novel (which is really a novella). A young man has lost his love. He suffers so much that he cannot accept the pain and thinks he will never recover. He commits suicide. In the wake of this novel, suicides among the young in Europe surged.
It is said that Werther was semi autobiographical. Apparently the real-life Goethe was more like your protagonists. He suffered, thought it through, and moved on to have a long, fruitful life. After all, some consider Goethe to be the Shakespeare of German literature.
It is excellent that you tell us in author's notes that this story is fictional. You write so convincingly, we might have thought otherwise.
This is a very thoughtful, relevant story. The theme and struggle are universal.

It is my first time hearing the novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther. The novel sounds interesting. I will read the synopsis of that novel. I like to write on topics that deeps into the human emotions especially on how a person rise or defeated by his struggles. I appreciate that you like the story. Thanks for the support @theinkwell!
