Purpose For Buying The Tech
Let's face it, people have so many reasons as to why they buy a phone, it's always to satisfy a particular need. It can be economical, could be social, it could be essential. When people buy a phone for social needs, it could be that they just want to follow a trend, that could be seen when people buy iPhones and Samsung.
When people buy for economic purpose, it could be that they want the best, for cheaper prices, such phones could be midrange Xiaomi devices that offers really great features and sells for some ridiculously affordable amount.
Some people particularly buy high-end phones just to fulfil their ego needs. Satisfying an urge in other to flex one's financial muscles, and not really because the phones would specifically serve a different purpose. Ego needs are often showcased by celebrities
Making The Choices
However, people can also buy phones for different reasons, it could be the processor, the display, the battery size, the chipset or even the design. Is it Premium, classy, smooth, or expensive.
Another reason why people buy phones is to continue the love for a particular brand, some people are die hard IOS fans, others are android, some people buy to also fulfil brand love, this is why some people spend, not to cost or be economical, but to fulfil brand love. It's Why Samsung users have a dogged fan base
The Samsung Galaxy series have some of the best display and design with amazing curve in the mid-range section and here you'll see people who are spending a lot of money to buy quality display.
Another major reason is camera. This is because a good camera can help you vlog to earn on maybe YouTube, 3Speak and then photography as well.
One of the reasons people consider camera as a very important part of a phone is that it's useful, got utility. With a camera you can vlog, take pictures and do many other things which are essential. With a camera you can make money, advertise your product, sell to an audience or conduct an exhibition.
So for an internet guy as me, I tend to see camera, a good display, a nice battery and a powerful chipset as one of the reason why I buy a phone and sometimes even when I try to be economical, I try to spend to fulfil a particular specification. So it feels like OnePlus 9 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S21 ultra are some of the best video phones in the market.
I wouldn't really include the pixel 5 or the upcoming pixel 6 series, with Google themed processors. This is because pixels are fantastic picture phones, but the options for videos are really limited. As a person who wants to have a quality device with good video options, the iPhone 12 series actually the best especially the Pro Max.
The Iphone's Cost (Misconception)
However, there's this Idea that people have about iPhones. They feel that iPhones are ridiculously overpriced, but they go ahead to spend $1100 on maybe an OPPO FIND X3 or maybe even a Mi 11 ultra for just a lesser amount. One thing about buying phones is that when you're spending according to your demand,.
It'll make it easier to buy something that can suit your needs and last for a really long period of time. For someone who's ridiculously in love with photography, we all know that iPhones have average night photography, even if iPhone 12 Pro came with LIDAR to help improve their night shots, it still cannot match the amazing night shot of the Google Pixel 5.
Samsung has a better night photography than iPhone, but not even comparable to the pixel 5. Huawei P40 has incredible zoom photography and of course great night shot as well but still not comparable to the pixel 5.
Spend To Fufill A/More Purpose(s)
All in all, the lesson here is, try to spend not because of the cost, but to suit some particular specification and meet some particular reason or purpose of buying, especially when you're trying to save cost. I'm a Samsung lover, I however feel that it's expensive to use a Samsung and that some other phone could do better for even lesser prices.
As for the OnePlus 9 and the Pro, I feel they're good photography phone maybe even better than some of the 12 Pro Max's but the iPhone 12 Pro Max outdoes it when it comes to video shooting, hence my preference for the iPhone because its suits a reason as to why i'm buying it. Bottom line, let your spending suit a particular reason or cost, irrespective of prices.

I'll say when it comes to gadgets it's quality over price sensitivity for me.

Of course, it has to be quality over price, however some people buy becomes they just want to spend on that price tally, it's quite a bizzare economic conditions. However for people like you and I, we want to utilize every cent we're spending.

I also prefer utility over extra features that won't help me as much. It just doesn't seem worth the cost when I could invest that money elsewhere to make a profit for me.

Some people just love to show off.
I couldn't careless about brands, if a particular gadgets meets my requirements at a price I can afford without going overboard I will buy it.
I know there are times when I can afford better stuff, but I won't throw my money on it if I can find a good gadget at a lower price.
This is purely need based not because my fancy takes me there. I don';t care what people think, I care about what I can or cannot do.

In a bid to actually manage our means, we tend to find creative ways to actually manage our resources. I think sometimes people buy into brands because they feel they can actually trust these brands to always deliver. However they even end up spending more than they envisaged.

While it is true that some brands are trust worthy one needs to recognize that there are lesser known brands which are equally good though they don't have a great brand name.
The amount spent on making a brand famous is billed to the customer.
Personally I've decided never to buy Apple products because of the elbow twisting tactics they employ to make their customer buy all their products.
Sell a phone without a charger? No I'd buy a cheaper Korean (used to be Chinese) product which will give me more and will last longer.
While I don't like apples, their iPhone 12 would solve my video needs and I'll spend to purchase it simply because it takes care of that immediate need. I know they're coy in the way they sell their products, but then they're established and they can do this at the expense of people, it's bad but then, they understand how to to offend people and please them at the same time.
