The Hive Engagement League

This league is not based around financial rewards and relates to engagement.

Everyone currently on my master list has a chance here, including those powering down or dealing in delegations over the past couple of weeks. Only the top 100 scores are shown.

The score is made up from a simple formula which uses the following types of engagement:

  • Posts (P)
  • Comments (C)
  • Number of people spoken to (PS)
  • Comments outside of own posts (CO)
  • Unique Author posts (UA)
  • Comments - replies to replies - depth > 2 (CR)
  • Comments - length in characters (CL)
  • Up-votes to others (V)
  • Up-votes to different authors (UV)
  • Self-votes - No minus score but no bonus HIVE (SV)

The big question is: How do we get a larger part of our community to engage?

The charts tell us the number of comments is increasing slowly over time. However, I feel when we take out the bot comments, the manual repeating comments, the 'thank you' comments, we don't have too many comments left.

@abh12345: is it somehow possible to create charts in which we show the levels of comments that show 1) manual comments 2) meaningful comments or something like that?

What i guess it's also affected but the HIVE, less value is having it looks like less participation... just my intuition. I am doing my nest to maintain my decision to participate/post every day... even when i see my wallet going down on BTC/USD.

We indeed see a kinda of sync between lower HIVE prices at the exhanges and the amount of (manual) activities. Such a shame though. But a great opportunity to get more going with less users. Should be more easy to create a high level of connectiveness.

Thanks again for taking the time to and inform us how we are doing in this engagement league. To my astonishment, I entered the top 3. Never thought I would end up there, as well as not too far down from the top. Last week for the first time I felt a little competition growing in myself. Now I'm asking myself: Can I make it to number 2 or 1 next week? At the same time, I feel like not even wanting to try going for number 2 or 1; I shall leave the top 10 to others in the community since in the end, we need to increase the levels of engagement through our community and find ways to pull in more users in the engagement side of things :)

It is pretty tricky to do both. A comment is a comment, manual or automated (we can't differentiate with code), and it's up to an individual to value it's meaningfulness I think.

It's not gonna be straightforward for sure. I would think with help of AI, it would be possible to differentiate between repeating comments and (more or less) unique comments. It'll not be to blame and shame, but it'll give a better view on real connections and engagement. It'll help us to get a much better insight and may help us better to drive things in whatever direction we want and/or need.

But a more simple (ie none-AI) approach could be to identify the repeating comments, the quantity thereof and substract that from the total number of comments.

A reason why I got interested in SQL queries, is to try to figure this out. We need better analyses to understand better what is going on. And I do hope it can provide us better infomation to help us define programs and whatnot to drive HIVE wanted directions. But first things first: Trying to find a solution for what I like to get 🙃

I did a bit better than last week, but a lot of them were merry Christmas, Happy new Years comments, votes were down a bit, but I wanted to give some bigger votes than lately so that happened. Almost made it into the top 20 again, but am fine at 22 since that is the highest for me in a month or so.

Weeklies down just a tad, but not bad considering it is the Holidays, and most years things slow down for the holidays.

I do hope every one enjoyed the Holidays, and please all, be careful on New Years Eve and keep it safe.

Thank you for your post. I just got access to HIVEsql. This stuff is amazing and well-organized, as is your post. I wonder, how do you determine whether or not comments are copy/pasted? Do you look for duplicates?

Also, is there a way to display a scrolling chart versus an image? Are you using Access/Excel to do your queries? I am. Would a visual chart display like Tableau work?

Good to hear you are taking a look at HiveSQL.

As far as duplicates, I vet new names in the top 10 and just take a look at their last 7 days of comments:

select body, len(body) from comments where author = 'abh12345' and created > getdate()-7
and depth > 0
--and (body like '%merry christmas%')

If on a visual scan I notice many similar comments and comment length, i'll replace 'merry christmas' with a portion of that text to see just how many comments and total length, and deduct those from the total.

Also, is there a way to display a scrolling chart versus an image?

Probably, I think my display needs an update but there is a lot of data to cram in.

Are you using Access/Excel to do your queries?

Yes I think so - as long as the consumer can understand the presentation, anything goes :)

This seems like a very promising opportunity for people to be rewarded for their active involvement in things that are going on in this platform. It's a nice publicity and it's the type that promotes quality engagement.
