The usual after-coffee walk

avatar

Sometimes nothing comes out, not even a walk I've been able to do properly. I do, however, have a few extenuating circumstances to excuse this lack of activity. Such as some health issues I'm not used to but someone, who seems to be coordinating our lives, decided it was time for me to experience something new and very unpleasant. I don't want to mention this again except to justify the fact that today I have to relate a walk that happened some time ago, last summer.

I remember a walk I took by the seaside in the rain. I chose walk-in rainy weather because it resonates better with my current state of mind. A walk starting from a small terrace where I used to have coffee whenever I arrived in Balchik, a small town in Bulgaria on the Black Sea. My favorite place to spend my holidays when I can't go to my favorite and only island I visited in Greece, namely Thassos!

So, every morning, we go down to a fancy terrace. Cappuccino and the sea, the pleasure of watching the sea with a cup of coffee in front of us.

img_3789_2_.jpg

Coffee is a beverage I drink slowly, I like to enjoy it. I extend the time as long as I can, at least an hour to sit on comfortable sofas and watch the sea, smell the sea. That day, the too-long coffee gave the clouds time to take hold of the sky before we went for a walk. The usual after-coffee walk.

img_3511_2_.jpg

The rain started suddenly, as only happens at the seaside. Now it's sunny and in five minutes it gets dark and the rain starts.

img_3492_2_.jpg

img_3514_2_.jpg

Summer rains have an advantage. They are usually short, even if they come in several waves, they are short and intense...

img_3495_2_.jpg

... but they go out quickly. Even if the clouds remain, the rain has stopped. Tourists immediately appear from their sheltered spots.

img_3498_2_.jpg

The walk begins, even if late.

img_3524_2_.jpg

I have to say that I love the rain, I also love it right after the rain, when everything is washed and smells nice. I like it when there are few people around.

img_3526_2_.jpg

img_3528_2_.jpg

The beach, of course, is deserted...

img_3564_2_.jpg

Almost deserted!

img_3533_2_.jpg

The sun appears and then quickly disappears behind the clouds. This makes it sometimes brighter, sometimes greyer, but no rain.

img_3589_2_.jpg

The walk is very pleasant!

img_3706_2_.jpg

The clouds over the sea are impressive. They change shape quickly and steal our gaze.

img_3715_2_.jpg

img_3717_2_.jpg

When I was younger and used to spend a lot of time at sea, I had time and no worries, I loved fishing. In fact, it was not only a pleasure, it was also a necessity, because it was also a source of food, after the little money ran out. I knew, from experience, that it catches more fish after the rain.

Now, on my walk, I saw the fishermen and remembered the times of my youth.

img_3728_2_.jpg

img_3729_2_1_.jpg

img_3732_2_.jpg

It reminded me of my youth and the long holidays at the Black Sea, at Vama Veche, in Romania, my country. Back then I couldn't, I wasn't allowed to go to Bulgaria. I remembered fishing and I remembered that for a long time I used to feed myself with the fish I caught, with the clams I picked, and with shrimps. The sea was full of some shrimps, smaller than the ones I find in the shop now.
I realize how much time has passed since then, decades because now there are no more shrimps in the Black Sea. They disappeared in less than fifty years! Sad situation...

Now it's March. In our countries, both Romania and Bulgaria, it is a springtime custom, on March 1st the boys give the girls some silk string, in two colours, white and red, as a symbol of spring, rebirth and love. It's called "Martisor"(this in Romanian language), I don't know how to say it in Bulgarian!

img_3742_2_.jpg

At the end of the walk, we saw this tree to whose branches "martisoare" were tied. Bulgarian custom. I don't know the significance but I think it's something to help maintain love.

I'll say it again and again, I've found that my main activity lately is... walking. Like all of you, I love to walk, but only now I have realized that walking has become my main mode of relaxation. Slowly, slowly overtaking the other pleasures I still have.

"Martisor" is called "Martaki" in Greek! Another common thing we have, amazing!
But here we (well, the kids mostly) wear it, so that we don't get burnt from the sun. We used to make one every 1st of March with my mother :)
Beautiful post @bluemoon! Glad to learn that your love for the sea comes from your youth!

Martaki! Sounds very nice. I like so much that we discover a common word, a common custom, that we find a closeness between the two nations naturally, not necessarily by reading history books. In a post by Stefanos, I saw that you say Platanos to the same tree that we call Platan (one of my favorite trees).

Yes, it is so interesting! Platanos or Platani (even closer to Platan) is one of my favorite trees, too. I dream of being under a huge one and listening to the rustle of the leaves, one of the most beautiful sounds. So glad you mentioned it, it travels me to the most beloved places!

In Bucharest, there are many plane trees. About 15 years ago a mayor decided to plant several thousand plane trees. Unfortunately, pollution and lack of care killed many of them, but fortunately, there are still quite a few!

A nice thought by that mayor. So sad that most of them died.
It will be great when the ones that survived will grow old!

Yes, it will be nice. I hope my granddaughter Ilinca enjoys them.
I hope the madness that's going on with Russia doesn't change our lives, especially those of us who are
so close to the hot zone.

I guessed right that it is Blacksea. I like summer rain. It brings cooling and relief. I think you should also visit west coastline of Turkey. You would like it ;)

What beautiful photos you captured on that walk some time ago. And I'm sorry to hear you have some health problems. I hope it's nothing serious. And that you'll soon be back on your feet.

Sounds like you are experiencing some health challenges, sorry to hear that. I hope things are alright and that they improve soon.

Looks like a nice spot for savoring a cup of coffee. That wood and stone bridge is really cool.

I agree that the smell after a rain is something special.

A friend told me that you're supposed to tie the "martisoare" to a tree begining to bloom to mark the coming of spring. Not sure if that's accurate or not, but he's Bulgarian so I believed him lol.

Yes, that's certainly how it is in Bulgaria, now I think I remember knowing that too. In Romania, it has more to do with girls and women, who get these "martisoare" from boys and wear them pinned to their clothes, on their chests. I remember from my childhood and teenage years, at school, the girls would brag about their catch...the ones who got the most "martisoare" were the most admired.

I have heart problems...tests, surgery, recovery, observation... problems like that. I feel better now, it remains to be seen what the subsequent tests will say.

wear them pinned to their clothes,

That's an interesting tradition.

Sorry to hear about your heart problems. I'm glad you're feeling better. Hopefully the remaining test results will be good news.

Oh, only when I saw what you say and I already miss Thassos. Me too, I only stayed in Limenaria and went daily to Pefkari and Potos. That's all I need. Thank you for the joy you gave me!
