Introduction to Jilapi Fruit

It is really a strange kind of fruit found in the rural areas of Bengal. When the tree bears this fruit, its shape is much like that of jilapi (a type of sweet food made by mixing flour and sugar). That is why it is called jilapi fruit.
However, this fruit is also called by different names in our village. This fruit is known as Katamundi fruit in our village. This is because the leaves of this fruit tree look a lot like the leaves of the mehendi tree and this tree has a lot of cuts so it is called cut mehendi i.e. cut fruit.

This fruit is green in its raw state and when it ripens slowly it changes to another color. The inside of this spiral-shaped fruit is like a white choir. Inside each choir is a small black seed. White coyotes are mainly eaten. These are very good to eat.

Of course these fruits are called by different names in different areas. Long ago, this fruit tree could be seen in most of the houses in our village. But at present most of them are on the verge of extinction. A few such trees are still occasionally seen on the side of the road. I used to eat these from the trees with my classmates as a child. And I used to play different games with the seeds obtained from these fruits. Which is now just a memory.

Once upon a time there was a fruit tree in our house. But to be honest, most of these are eaten by children.
This fruit tree was originally used as a wood tree or wood fuel in the area earlier and its stalks were used as fences in various places on the banks of houses or ponds. So this tree is currently on the verge of extinction.

A long time ago I was talking to a friend of mine about this fruit and at one point he said he had never seen such a fruit. So she asked me to bring her this fruit from home. Then I took some of these fruits for him and did some photography at that time.

শুভ সকাল। আশা করি সকলেই সৃষ্টিকর্তার দয়ায় বর্তমানে চলমান করোনাভাইরাস মহামারীর এই সংকটকালে সুস্থ আছেন, ভালো আছেন এবং নিরাপদে আছেন। আজ আমি আপনাদের সাথে আমাদের গ্রাম অঞ্চলে খুঁজে পাওয়া একটি বিচিত্র রকমের ফল সম্পর্কে আলোচনা করেছি। যার নাম জিলাপি ফল। আশা করি আপনাদের ভালো লাগবে।

জিলাপি ফল এর পরিচিতি

বাংলার গ্রাম অঞ্চল খুঁজে পাওয়া এটা সত্যিই এক বিচিত্র ধরনের ফল। যখন গাছে এই ফলের ফলন হয় তখন এর আকৃতি অনেকটা জিলাপির ( এক প্রকার মিষ্টি জাতীয় খাবার যা ময়দা ও চিনি সংমিশ্রণে তৈরি করা হয়) মত প্যাচানো হয়ে থাকে। তাই একে জিলাপি ফল বলা হয়। তবে এই ফলকে আমাদের গ্রামে ভিন্ন নামেও ডাকা হয়ে থাকে। এই ফল আমাদের গ্রামে কাটামুন্দি ফল নামে পরিচিত। তার কারণ হচ্ছে এই ফলের গাছের পাতা দেখতে অনেকটা মেহেদি গাছের পাতার মতো এবং এই গাছে অনেক কাটা থাকে তাই একে কাটা মেহেদি অর্থাৎ সংক্ষেপে কাটামুন্দি ফল বলা হয়।

এই ফলটি কাঁচা অবস্থায় সবুজ থাকে এবং যখন এগুলো ধীরে ধীরে পাকতে থাকে তখন এটি অন্য রঙে কিছুটা পরিবর্তন হতে থাকে। পেচানো আকৃতির এই ফলের ভিতর সাদা রঙের কোয়ার মত থাকে। প্রতি কোয়ার ভিতর আবার কালো রঙ্গের ছোট একটি করে বীজ থাকে। সাদা রঙের কোয়াগুলো মূলত খাওয়া হয়। এগুলো খেতে বেশ ভালোই লাগে।

অবশ্য এই ফল বিভিন্ন এলাকায় বিভিন্ন নামে ডাকা হয়। অনেক আগে আমাদের গ্রামে প্রায় অধিকাংশ বাড়িতেই এই ফলের গাছ দেখা যেত। কিন্তু বর্তমান সময়ে এগুলো অনেকটাই বিলুপ্তির পথে। এখনও মাঝে মধ্যে রাস্তার পাশে এরকম কয়েকটি গাছের দেখা মেলে। ছোটবেলা সহপাঠীদের সাথে এগুলো গাছ থেকে পেড়ে খেতাম। এবং এই ফলগুলো থেকে পাওয়া বীজ দিয়ে বিভিন্ন ধরনের খেলা খেলতাম। যা এখন কেবলই স্মৃতি।

একসময় আমাদের বাড়িতে এই ফলের একটি গাছ ছিল। কিন্তু সত্যি বলতে এগুলো বেশিরভাগই বাচ্চারা খেয়ে থাকে।
এই ফলের গাছ মূলত এলাকায় আগে কাঠ গাছ কিংবা এই গাছের কাঠ জ্বালানি হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং এর ডালপালা বাড়ি কিংবা পুকুর পাড়ের বিভিন্ন জায়গায় বেড়া হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হতো। তাই এই গাছ বর্তমানে বিলুপ্তির পথে।

অনেকদিন আগে আমি আমার একজন বন্ধুর সাথে এই ফল নিয়ে কথাবার্তা বলছিলাম এবং এক পর্যায়ে সে বলল এই ধরনের ফল সে কখনও দেখেনি। তাই সে আমাকে অনুরোধ করেছিল যেন আমি বাড়ি থেকে এই ফল তার জন্য নিয়ে আসি। তখন আমি কয়েকটি এই ধরনের ফল তার জন্য নিয়ে যাই এবং সে সময়ে কিছু ফটোগ্রাফি করেছিলাম।
