Drone 3 - Cala Millor Beach

Another episode of see if Asher can avoid crashing his new toy - this time we are located at the beach in Cala Millor.

Getting a little braver with flying the drone now, at least it feels that way when flying over water. I think am under the illusion that if over land, there is a chance I could recover a crash landing, but I don't think there is that much hope from a few hundred feet. A submerged drone though is definitely a goner, and I'm not done playing just yet!

At present, the beach at Cala Millor has a lot of Posidonia oceanica (the dark patches) which is cleared and used for agriculutural purposes. The presence of Posidonia oceanica is both sign that the waters are clean, and that these underwater meadows are shrinking in size.

Also, the sand is yet to be spread out across the coral, as is done to accommodate the tourists when the summer season arrives. It has looked worse though, like when storm Gloria arrived like last year.

I found a new button on the drone yesterday and can now move the camera - handy. I'm trying to avoid sudden movements but did leave a bit of that in this video. It is probably time to YouTube some tips on shooting, and to learn more about some of the autopilot options. I've not yet pressed the 'return to home' button, and should see just how close the drone gets to home to see if at some point I could go stand on the pier, or maybe on Rafa Nadal's boat :)

Also, it seems there are a couple of drone communities, and I've recently joined this one: https://peakd.com/c/hive-150994/created

Have a good weekend all!

Asher

Beach shots are the winner for me, bloody awesome man. You got a good idea of the speed when it went down low!

Excellent works, brings back memories of when I first visited the place, nearly 29 years ago.

That is pretty cool and a great new hobby. helps having no one around on the beach for learning purposes. I was going to ask about the return to user button and how it works. What is the range of this model you have?

Yep, feels safer without anyone there but a malfunction could happen at any time?

GPS records a starting position and return to hom tries to hit that spot. You can interrupt the autopilot at any point which is good.

Range is supposed to be 10km. I can't see the thing 500m away so there is no way I'll be testing that out!

Lol. 10km is quite a distance and don't blame you. Would be cool to have a monitor next to you with live feed and then you could sit and not have to worry looking for it. This is my kind of hobby and one day will get one as it looks like loads of fun. Better than flying a kite.

You attach your phone to the controller so can always see what it sees. Still, I don't like having it out of sight yet and 10km is just insane!

Unlike a kite, 0 wind is preferable! I could hear it today in the wind, fighting to keep it's position, pretty cool.

I doubt you would have as much freedom in the UK as you have now as I know they have strict rules and licenses are needed. Funny enough I know a weed farm looking for drone pilots as part of their security system. I think you will master this quite quickly and become quite a decent pilot. Looks like you just need time behind the controls to get the skills and confidence.

As it's 249g there are no real regulations here apart from the standard don't fly near airports. There's a decent app that tells you where is good, and the drone app will also tell you if you are in a bad location.

It's not that hard to fly, just tough to master and get some decent shots.

That sounds great as the app will warn you then. You are doing well already and will be good to see how good these videos are in a years time.
