Intimate Icy Landscape

avatar

I think I should post the Ice photos I have taken in the past weeks, before the Winter is over and all ice has melted, although cool icicles might be even more interesting on a hot Summer day ;)

Intimate Icy Landscape
Frozen WaterfallsIcy Landscape - Frozen Waterfalls

So, as promised in my post Frozen Morning last week, here are some of my ice photos.

Green and Orange and White and Ice
❖ please click the image for fullsize view ❖

Of all the ice photos I shot this Winter I somehow like the photo above most. In my eyes the white water and white or transparent ice makes a very nice contrast to the orange rock and the green moss on the right side.

The small waterfall is surrounded by fresh ice, partly clear as glass. Soon the water will have a transparent cover, made from ice.

Clear as glass - Ice around the waterfall

Why did I title this post "Intimate Icy Landscape"?

Well, the "Icy" part should be clear, but what is an "Intimate Landscape" photo? In my researches I have found, that the American photographer Eliot Porter might have created this term: Eliot Porter had the first exhibit of colour photography at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1979 – an exhibit titled Intimate Landscapes.

Icicles inside a little hollow

Icicles hanging from the Rock
❖ please click the image for fullsize view ❖

I would say, an intimate landscape photo is a part of a bigger landscape scene, showing smaller details, but different from close-up images or macros. It's somewhere between the grand vista landscape photo and a close-up or macro of a flower.

Ice envelops the dead branch
❖ please click the image for fullsize view ❖
Ice lying over the dead wood like a blanket
❖ please click the image for fullsize view ❖

I have taken these photos on January 10, 2021. About one week later, when I have been in this area again, which is near where I live, I have taken more, but a little bit different ice photos. If I find some time during next week, I want to edit these photos and make one more Intimate Icy Landscape post ... before the Spring is here ;)

Information

All photos were taken with the Canon EOS R and my EF 70-200mm f/4 L lens.

Beautiful photos @johannpiber. You right that the contrast between moss, ice and rock looks great , but my favourite photo in your post is the one below with running waterfall.

Very wonderful ice photos! It's amazing to see this icy landscape. I love all of your photos. In the meantime, the first one is my most favorite, too. The same reasons as yours. Great capture! 🙃

Ice is always amazing, even more when you look at the details, what's frozen below the clear ice. Sometimes you can encounter nice surprises :)

Fabulous photos once again with that special mountain goat touch 😉
As you know, I don't like to pick favorites as I love them all and each one has it's own special character of beauty.
Nature is indeed very intimate and beautiful and I am looking forward to the next issue.
Well done here my friend!

Good Morning Zac,

I don't know if I'll find enough time this week. In between there are always a few minutes to reply or to comment, but photo editing or making a post is another thing. I have 3 monitors in front of me at work, and although I loved such a view (the more monitors the better ;) when I was younger, I don't want to look into one when I come home in the afternoon.

Anyway, I thank you very much for your nice compliments, Zac, and I wish you a great day :)

Hahaha, my third Good Morning here Hannes.

Now you are really blessed for the day. I also occasionally have an allergy for monitors and I have only one, so I can imagine how you feel.

Making a good post always takes time and I understand your reluctance to engage in it.
Now add our 5 minute waiting period for the uploading of each photo to a post and you will go crazy.
Luckily I am already crazy and I chase the dog around while waiting for a picture to load 🤣

Leaving you with a smile here!

Cheers and thanks!

And this is my third "Hi Zac" today 😉

I need more monitors at work for an efficient workflow, and if I had more space I would add a fourth monitor 😁

Yes, I am really blessed with an extreme fast internet. If I had to wait for such a long time for a photo to upload I would go mad 😜

Unfortunately, I often forget that many people including you have a slow internet connection, because I upload my photos in higher quality and bigger size than I would need.

Hi Hannes,

Well said lol.
I will never cope with two monitors, never mind four, as I even struggle with one 🤣
A fast internet must be a great blessing and we do have fibre here, but it is way too expensive for us.

I used to drop the pixels in my photos, as then they will load faster, but it affects the quality of the pictures. So now I simply have to endure the wait.

Cheers and thanks!

At home I would need two for easier photo editing, but at work I have a couple of different software programs running which I can easier manage when I have more monitors.

I just decrease the size of the images, but not their quality or compression rate. That makes them a bit more lightweight, but most are still at 4-6 megabytes.

Yeah, I have seen a German resident here working on one of my Peregrine falcon shots that I gave him as a gift. He also had two screens and worked in photoshop.
I have an old Dell Optiplex and one screen and that's more than enough to keep me occupied 🤣
We have two identical setups here and while Marian works with her students at the Seminary on her PC, I do my own thing here on mine.

Hahaha, I can cut a 4mg to 1.2kb very easily, but like I said, the quality of the photo is not the same.

Cheers and thanks!

Yes, a multiple monitor setup is very useful. At work I couldn't work with one single monitor only anymore. At home I just don't have enough space on my desk :(

Right, you can decrease the weight of an image easily, but as you say, the quality of the photo is going down too.

Good mornong Hannes,

I am happy with just one screen and like you, I am also cramped here on my edge of the desk.
We share the desk lengthwise, Marian and her PC at the one end and me at the other end.
The desk is only 900mm wide, so not much space for things.

Yes, so I have stopped to decrease the weight of the images and now simply wait for them to load 😉

Cheers and thanks!

Good morning Hannes,

My good news is that I have never had a drawer here to keep things in and yesterday I changed that, as now I have a small unit with 4 big drawers right here next to the desk.
So things are starting to look much better 😉

Good morning Zac,

Good morning Hannes,

Yes it seems that I will also follow your example, as the first two drawers are already full and my desk is not cleared yet 🤣
Problem is that I cannot have as many drawers as you have, as I will not remember what is inside the drawers. I often go to the store to buy something that I need and then a month later I discover that I have many of that something stashed somewhere right here at home 😜
So, soon the 4 drawers will be full and my desk will also still be full 🤣
You know what I will say here 🤣

Have a blessed Sunday my friend.

Cheers and thanks!

Good morning Hannes,

Hahaha, yes you are right, as the warning came too late and I am already improving on your example by stashing more things that I don't need 🤣
I know that pleasant feeling of a new old discovery. Then I will put it in a new place for use the next time that I need it and then I will forget where I put it 🤣🤣🤣

Makes sense somehow doesn't it?

Cheers and thanks!

Good day Zac,

that's a phenomenon I have encountered long ago when I moved from a small one room apartment to a bigger one - soon the additional space became too small too ... that happened the next times too, so that after a short time all the new extry space was full with things I didn't need anymore, but didn't throw away because I had enough space ... 😂

... yes, that makes a lot sense, I know exactly what you mean 🤣

Good morning Hannes,

When I look at the animals and compare them to people's lifestyles there's very little comparison.
They simply use their "houses" to sleep in and the world outside is their larder. They never store anything in their "houses" and after they have raised their kids, they kick them out.
As humans, we have perfected the art of storing our memories and some people hoard so much that they battle to find space to sleep.

Then they die and everything gets chucked out by the new owners and they start storing their own stuff and so life goes.

Cheers and thanks!

Good morning Zac,

you're very right and I belong to these hoarders too - if I had a large storage hall I would easily fill it up with necessary things 🤣

... after they have raised their kids, they kick them out - I like that somehow, but I have to admit that I would even love to have my kids living with us forever 😁

Good morning Hannes,

Hahaha, yes, Papillon owned a church property up north with a big hall. I put a mezzanine steel framed floor in the hall and we did the computer training on the new top floor.
The bottom floor was always packed full with donated stuff that we distributed to the poor people in the townships. No space, even for a mouse 🤣

Oh yeah, we discussed the children issue before methinks 😉

Hope that your day is good my friend.

Good morning Hannes.

Thank you once again and our power cut today is only minutes away at 10am.

So I will see your post later today.

Good almost afternoon Hannes,

The power cuts were thankfully suspended today, as they have dried the coal and say that 4 units are now back in operation.
Can you believe that in this day and age, they cannot invent a way to keep the coal dry during rain?

Work comes first my friend and I only hope that you will get through it all.
No excuses needed this side, as I know your capabilities my friend.

Hope that you guys are having a good Sunday and all of the best for the new week.

Our Sunday is gray and rainy 🌧️ so, if we had coal outside it would get we without a rain cover 😂
You are right, they should be able to keep the coal dry, at least the amount they need daily or so.

As said, my computer stays off today, I do my important Hive work on the phone.

I hope you have a nice Sunday afternoon Zac ☺️

Good morning and thank you Hannes,

I can dream up all kinds of ways to keep a few tons of coal dry my friend.
Bridge brackets with steel roofs on the coal conveyer belts and the coal feed on the ground covered by a long high steel shed sided by storm water channels. Simple but very effective.

I think that I told you that I cannot work on a phone, so I am stuck with this old PC.
At least it has a wide keyboard 🤣

I hope that your new week has started well!

Lovely to see you posted Hannes. It’s been awhile but I know you are busy at work.

Your Intimate Icy Landscape is gorgeous. It’s impossible to pick a favorite. I love the small waterfall surrounded by the ice and how the ice in the next photo remind me of teeth or bristles in an old hair comb or brush.

Intimate Icy Landscape would have been perfect two days ago, I would have wedged myself between or onto the rock simply to cool down.

Stunning photography with moss encapsulated in ice, flow hanging sedately midair.

Being busy is good, fortunately you have projects through these times. Many places down here have either closed down, or are on short weeks. Many work from home, offices now stand empty, perhaps the time will come where one only rents space for weekly meetings, old office space converted into living space, who knows....

Offer of some ice would have been gratefully accepted, currently cooler with outer edge of Cyclone Eloise giving us relief from the heat for a day or two. North Eastern side at Kruger National Park is being flooded after passing over Mozambique and Madagascar.

Some !WINE to cheer you up, a !BEER to settle after commuting and thanks for tokens I still am learning more about 🤣 Have a wonderful last week of January!

In these strange pandemic times with all the measures and restrictions I have to look for other photo opportunities, because most of the big vistas and waterfalls and ... are not available to me at the moment, and I think it will stay that way for a while longer. I have got quite some more photos from my last walk already, but I'm not sure that I will find time to make a post until next week.
