Sweet potato yield from this year

avatar

Recently all of the spuds have been dug up and we had quite the successful harvest. I made a short video showing off the spuds that we grew. A few of them were huge and the rest were market size. I do not have a scale at the moment to weigh them but I think I have about 25 pounds of them at least. I grew these from cuttings of spuds and also via the propagation of slips.

I gave the big ones to my friends and saved the smaller ones for myself. I am now storing them under my bed and I check on them every so often to make sure they are now rotting in certain areas. But I had the chance to taste them and they have a very rich flavor. The sweetness and the smell of these roasting in the oven is amazing.

All of these should last many months, I am curious to see if they will last into the summer and fall of next year but I doubt it. I eat alot of them so I think maybe a few months is all I will get out of all of these. My goal is eventually to grow enough where I will always have more than I need for the year, so I do not have to buy any at the local supermarket.

Amazed they all grew so well in just wood chips, I find myself impressed more and more as I use my wood chips to grow different things in it. As we were pulling out the spuds I found alot of mycelium growing throughout the bed, making me think it is a healthy ecosystem in those beds. The spuds we got were huge so maybe the mycelium helps deliver nutrients to the spuds some how.

Below is a short video showing off the spuds, I added some music to go along with the short video. I just scroll across the table where they are all set up. We lay them out on towels after washing any dirt or woodchips found on them and they dried out over night before I stored them in boxes.

Those are huge! I've never seen them grow that large. Have you tried eating the leaves yet?

Yes I did, I have a video ready to post showing how I cooked them and at the end of the video I eat some and talk about how they taste. I plan on posting them soon.

Hah sure are, the big ones are kind of a pain in the ass to work with. So giving them to my friends to deal with worked well.

Yup, we get very long growing seasons in the South so I let them grow for 6+ months before harvesting.

Those amazing sweet potatoes! If you eat a lot of them then I think that would last you through the winter.
It is amazing that you plated those on wood chips! I never heard of that.
Wow... a successful harvest indeed!

Hah yeah we shall see how long they last me. Yeah having them in wood chips makes it very easy to harvest them. I can do it all by hand and not need a shovel that can damage the spuds. I have also grown them in old hay and that worked well too. But my farmer I get old hay from ran out so I moved onto using wood chips and they did just as well I think.

Yes, most of my plants from the last two years have had woodchips amended into the soil or I just dug a whole and used woodchips to fill in after placing the plant inside. After a few years the woodchips break down completely and its just like soil at that point. My Cherry and Apple trees are both completely living in woodchips. Though I hear the fungi from the woodchips may go after the fruit trees. But that has not happened yet, but something I will need to watch out for. If they do Ill use neem oil to treat them.
