Our Blueberries are becoming ripe

avatar
(Edited)

One of our bushes tends to fruit a few days before the others due to it being a different cultivar. We started to see ripening berries on that bush and it meant all the others are just around the corner.

We check by pulling on the berry and when they drop off without effort they are ready to harvest.

We have four bushes and they tend to produce over a pound of berries through the summer. I got them about five years or so ago and they have really started producing.

Most of the bush needs another week or two to fully ripen but a couple every day are now ready for the picking.

One day I want many more Blueberry bushes but for now the four we have will do great. Between now and the next two weeks or so the berries should all ripen up.

Lastly I want to thank the Mason Bees for doing such a great job pollinating the flowers, we got so many berries the plants are hanging over..haha

Hah not since a Hawk has been in the area. The birds are too paranoid to try to pick them.

Do the birds come raid your blueberries?

In the previous years yes they do. But last year a hawk killed a bird next door right around blueberry harvesting time and since then they dont hang out by the bushes much anymore. That's where I got the idea to build a kestrel house.

Hehe I think I'd have half as many without the solitary bees. They are quite the hard workers.

I like blueberries, but have not tried growing them yet. We do have strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, jostaberries and blackcurrants as well as blackberries from the brambles next door. That does us quite well.

I bet that does, sounds like quite the collection..maybe one day I'll grow currants and gooseberries. Never heard of jostaberries.

Best of luck with them, hope you have enough to fill your freezer.

Jostaberry are cross between blackcurrants and gooseberries. They can be eaten raw. I got a lot of these berries as someone else planted them when we let them use part of the garden in a 'landshare' scheme. We really ought to be more into making jam to make the most of them.

Oh super cool. Reminds me of a Tayberry that's a cross between a Blackberry and Raspberry.

I'll have to see if those grow in my climate. Could always use some more berry bushes.. especially since my raspberries are sick.

These berries are quite expensive and scarce around here. They do not grow in our climate, I guess, because I have never seen them around. Which part of the world is this? Tropic or temperate?

Blueberries require over 400 chill hours below 45F a year to fruit so maybe it does not get cold enough for long enough where you live.

Our climate is a Humid subtropical type also known as the Appalachian temperate rainforest.

Indeed, the cold would be a factor. I am sure the cold will also be necessary for the germination of its seeds. That will totally explain why it does not grow around here. Tropical climate is generally warm.

Yup. Just like with cherry trees and apple trees they require a certain amount of cold to make fruit.

They look very yummy... :) Berries don't grow very well here in the heat, not all varieties either.
We have strawberries in the highlands but not very sweet ones, sighh...

We have been eating them every day now. Ah yeah if they dont get enough cold air they dont seem to grow. Lucky where I live we get winters that make them happy.

Aww we got some strawberries too, ive seen wild one that are small that have no flavor.

The Mason Bees are doing their job to help you get more fruits with your blue berry bushes @solominer
I wished that I can get some fresh berries like these blueberries but I can just look at them from afar. :|

They sure are, great little helpers with my fruit bushes and plants. Aww that sucks, I feel that way about avocados. We have to get ours already old and only last a few days usually.

Hey there, thanks for the comment. Yeah ive heard that can be an issue for them. It gets quite hot where I live but the winters are a little chilly too and seems to keep them happy.

hope you can find a berry that does grow there.

Ah maybe it's a little warmer where I live, hopefully yours will be there soon too.

We will probably make some pies and smoothies. And if we have extra we will freeze them.
