Movies that drove my love of cars.

It's impossible to have watched the fast and the furious movies as a teenage boy without dreaming of fast cars and the exciting life behind them. Watching that silver/blue skyline made me want one more than anything. A lot of the lads in my area used to have illegal street races, the started buying up Japanese imports and you were nothing unless you had a kitted out car of some kind.

Unfortunately as an 18 year old I didn't have the money for a skyline but had to make do with a kitted out 1.2L Mitsubishi Colt instead. It had all the gear to look like it could go fast but none of the actual requirements. I did manage to move up to a Subaru Impreza after a few years thankfully and have some real fun.

I was browsing Netflix today and stumbled across Tokyo drift which seemed like a strange one at the time but I actually quite like in the franchise. Combined that with watching the latest one last week it got me thinking about watching the first one again and the whole series in general.

Best to worst

  1. The fast and the Furious.

This had to be the top of the rankings as the movie that started the franchise. It set the ground rules for everything that followed and made the whole serious possible. With Vin diesel as Dom the movie had a great plot and didn't stop the whole way through.

  1. 2 fast 2 furious.

The series stayed strong with the sequel and changed up the plot and story line. I think that Tyrese adds a lot to the series and plays a big part across all of the movies.

  1. Fast 5.

The last movie before the series gets a bit ridiculous. The Rock is a great character and while it does go a bit over the top in Brazil. It's not fully out of the box yet. It still has all of the main ingredients of the series with cars, danger, women and a great soundtrack.

  1. The fast and the furious: Tokyo drift.

This was a bit of an outlier as the third movie in the series but i really liked it. It changed up the plot and set in Japan went into the drift scene rather than the racing scene. The plot is silly, the cars are class and the story doesn't offer much but I just enjoy the whole thing. A lot of people don't like it but Hann plays a major role and it works as it stands.

  1. Fast and furious.

Any movie with Dominic and Brian is worth watching. This is where the movies were still about the cars and the racing instead of the stunts and the explosions. Brian is working for the FBI and recruits Dom to get involved. Solid movie without being spectacular.

6 - 10. All of the rest.

After number six it all becomes a money making operation. Dragging out the characters and making up more and more ridiculous situations for them to get involved with. From being a team of street racers to taking down international terrorists across the whole world in conjunction with the law. It makes no sense, totally unnecessary and purely for profit.

Of course I watched all of them as they are binge worthy but pure crap at the same time. You have to enjoy the cars and explosions but don't bother looking for a decent plot or anything other than the shiny visuals. I do think that we have seen the end after number ten as they brought out all of the old cast members in what looks like a goodbye wave.

Toyko Drift is the only one which was a bit cringe for me xD

I still watched all of the new ones when they came out but the first were way better. They were slightly realistic. Even Tokyo drift. A bit cheesy but i liked it.

Tokyo drift was about drifting. I did enjoy this movie too. But it was a lot different than the rest of the series. The one with the Vin diesel in it, I like watch the most !

Great post! Loved this franchise. Like you said, the first six we're great then it became apparent that it's now a money grab. I still watch them when they hit streaming services but stopped going out of my way to watch shortly after Paul Walker died. IMHO they should have ended the franchise after his death.

Such a money grab at this point. But at least the first few movies were brilliant so we can forgive them.
I think four or five was plenty to make and once Paul walker died it would have been the one thig to finish the series after that last movie. Your right on that one.

I just watched the most recent one and was pleasantly surprised. The original is always the best though

I'm with you on this one. The original was the best by far and set the story for everything else that came after.
