[ENG | ESP] Let's make a delicious "Pepito" | Hagamos un Pepito delicioso

One of the typical dishes of my hometown | Uno de los platos típicos de mi ciudad natal

Although at present it is very popular throughout the Venezuelan territory and in the world due to the massive migration of recent years, a Pepito is a typical sandwich from Barquisimeto, a city located in the center-west of the country. This delicious sandwich has a lot of flavor and the best of all is that it's very easy to make, in this post I'll show you how.

Aunque en la actualidad es muy popular en todo el territorio venezolano y en el mundo debido a la migración masiva de los últimos años, el Pepito es un sándwich típico de Barquisimeto, una ciudad ubicada al centroccidente del país. Este delicioso sándwich tiene mucho sabor y lo mejor de todo es que es muy fácil de hacer, en este post te enseño cómo.

To make a pepito like this you will need:

Para hacer un pepito como este vas a necesitar:


  • 1 piece of bread 12-14 inches
  • 4-5 ounces of chicken
  • 2 ounces of bacon
  • 1-2 ounces of corn
  • 1/4 of red onion
  • 1 clove garlic
  • Edam cheese
  • Parmesan cheese for gratin
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 pan de 30-35 cm
  • 100-150 gramos de pollo
  • 50 gramos de tocineta
  • 40 gramos de maíz
  • 1/4 de cebolla morada
  • 1 diente de ajo
  • Queso Edam
  • Queso parmesano
  • Sal y pimienta

The first thing we are going to do is cut. We are going to cut the chicken into cubes of no more than 1 inch on each side; We are going to cut the bacon, onion and garlic into smaller pieces, which look more or less like this:

Lo primero que vamos a hacer es cortar. Vamos a cortar el pollo en cubos de no más de 2 cm de lado; la tocineta, la cebolla y el ajo los vamos a cortar en pedazos más pequeños, que se vean más o menos así:

I used a large garlic clove because I really like the taste, but you can add a little less. Once the ingredients are cut, we're going to fry the garlic with the onion in a pan until they are golden brown. Once this point is reached, we're going to remove it from the heat and set aside. Now we're going to fry the bacon in the same pan until it cooks in its own fat and takes that golden hue that we like so much. Next, we're gonna reserve the bacon and cook the chicken in the fat that the bacon released. You can season to taste, I like to add only salt and pepper, but there are people who add other spices. When the chicken is cooked, we're gonna integrate all the ingredients (chicken, bacon, onion, garlic and corn) in the pan and mix.

Yo usé un diente de ajo grande porque me gusta mucho el sabor, pero pueden agregar un poco menos. Una vez cortados los ingredientes van a sofreír en una sartén el ajo con la cebolla hasta que estén doradas. Una vez alcanzado este punto, van a retirar los aliños del fuego y a reservar. En la misma sartén ahora van a sofreír la tocineta hasta que se cocine en su propia grasa y tome ese tono dorado que tanto nos gusta. Luego, van a reservar la tocineta y van a cocinar el pollo en la grasa que liberó la tocineta. Pueden condimentar al gusto, a mí me gusta agregarle sólo sal y pimienta, pero hay personas que le colocan otras especies. Cuando el pollo ya está cocido, van a integrar todos los ingredientes (pollo, tocineta, cebolla, ajo y maíz) en la sartén y a mezclar.

Bread and cheeses | Pan y quesos

Then, when all the ingredients are well integrated, we take the bread and open it in half. I used a baguette, I like it because of the size and smoothness of the mixture, but it can also be done with any other bread of your choice. If you use some spices like those of oregano or whole grains, they are very good. We cover with the Edam cheese slices (or Cheddar, or any other cheese you prefer) and on top we add a little Parmesan cheese. We take the oven to gratin for five minutes so that the cheese melts and voilá! Food's ready!

Luego, cuando todos los ingredientes estén bien integrados, tomamos el pan y lo abrimos por la mitad. Yo usé un baguette, me gusta por el tamaño y la suavidad de la mezcla, pero también lo pueden hacer con algún otro pan de su preferencia. Si utilizan alguno especiado como esos de orégano o integrales, quedan muy bien. Cubrimos con las láminas de queso Edam (o Cheddar, o cualquier otro queso que prefieran) y encima agregamos un poco de queso parmesano. Llevamos al horno a gratinar por cinco minutos para que se derrita el queso y voilá! ¡está lista la comida!

Pepitos are tasty, so versatile and easy to make, yet they are still no less nutritious. I liked the quality of your photographs, they are very beautiful, although I would have liked to see a step by step with more photos. Your introduction is fine, it is always important that every recipe has a story or a review regarding its origin, or how you learned to make it, when it is eaten, etc. On the other hand, the result looks very appetizing, uhmmm, delicious. Los pepitos son sabrosos, tan versátiles y sencillos de hacer, y aún así no son menos nutritivos. Me gustó la calidad de tus fotografías, son muy hermosas, aunque me hubiera gustado ver un paso a paso con más fotos. Tu introducción está bien, siempre es importante que toda receta lleve una historia o una reseña respecto a su origen, o a cómo la aprendiste a hacer, cuándo se come, etc. Por otra parte, el resultado se ve muy apetitoso, uhmmm, delicioso.
