Unboxing My LCD Writing Tablet - Update

(Edited)

This post may look strange and professional artists may laugh as this LCD writing tablet may have no use for many, but I have a goal with it, so it is of great use to me, at least I hope it will be.

We live in the 21st century, where we have so many gadgets one can't even choose which one to buy. My dream is to have the most performant drawing tablet, pad or whatever you want to call it. Out of curiosity I had a peek at what vendors have to offer these days regarding this category. I said out of curiosity, because I know I'm not going to buy any of those anytime soon, so it was just virtual window shopping on my behalf. Why? Because my dream is to draw and create different artworks one day, but because I have no talent, it would be extremely foolish to spend a few thousands of $ on a tool I would never use at full capacity, or it will be just to draw childish stickmen on it. It would be a huge waste of funds, which I'm always trying to avoid.

Unboxing My LCD Writing Tablet.jpg

Yesterday browsing one of the supermarket's offer, I came across this LCD writing tablet which was at around 8€. As it says on the box, it is "For paperless notes, drawing and writing". I know kids have 100 times more performant gadgets these days as they are not the ones paying for it 😂 So no worries, this will be prefect for me to fool around and find out if I have what it takes to make the next move and invest in something way better. So let's move on and see what I got.

This is how the box of my new toy looks like.

20220826_154904a.jpg

On the back of the box there is a detailed inventory and description in several languages.

20220826_154943a.jpg

When I opened the box I saw the tablet was wrapped in plain paper 😳, which was already a warning sign. For God's sake, this tablet has LCD display, it's not made of wood, so the least they could have done would have been a bubble nylon wrap.

20220826_154954a.jpg

There was a user manual included as well.

20220826_155059a.jpg

And this was where the surprises started. Sorry for the flash on the screen, disregard that. Looks at the rest of the screen. I was expecting a clean screen but instead I got a screen with spots on it, like it has already been used. I tried to turn it off and on, but no luck there either.

In the meantime I should mention that the screen is 8.5" and the tablet is 0.56cm thick or rather thin. They say it has a safety system, which means you can lock the screen to save the writing or drawing, which is smart. They also say the battery is included. The pen is on the top.

20220826_155118a.jpg

The back was fine. It comes with two magnets, in case you want it on the fridge as a messaging board. It's a good thing though.

20220826_155910a.jpg

So back to the screen. When I saw I can't turn it off, I started to read the instructions to see if I'm doing something wrong. Obviously I could not resist and already drew a few crazy things on it, hoping to be able to erase it after, but as the button does not react to touching, all the mess on the screen stays.

20220826_160217a.jpg

After reading the manual, I had to learn that most likely the battery is dead and needs to be changed.

20220826_160856a.jpg

That screw looks huge, but that's a macro photo, so I'm going to need a tiny screwdriver to change the battery and a battery as well.

20220826_162920a.jpg

At that point I put it aside with the intention to change the battery tomorrow, but after some thinking I decided to return it tomorrow. I'm hoping to get a functioning one, if not, then a refund as this is not fair.

From that little that I was able to do, I can say that I like the fact that the delete function is kind of "all or nothing". You can delete the whole writing or drawing, but can't delete parts, lines, letters. This makes my job harder as in drawing there's always deleting as well, especially if you're at the beginning and have no talent at all, like me. This will mean I have to redo my drawing entirely, but this does not scare me.

The other other thing I like that I will need to learn how hard or little to press the pencil to get a thin or thick line. I'm not saying the tablet is super cool, but for 8€ it's ok. I could get used to it.

Now let's see if there will be any left tomorrow or I'm going to return home with a refund.

So this is my first unboxing post and not the best one for sure. I was expecting something better, but you know how it is. You never know what you get. I hope one day I'm going to buy a professional tablet that an work miracles. Till then, this has to do 😏

Update

This morning I packed the tablet and headed back to the supermarket. While I was walking and enjoying the morning chill, I was thinking the best strategy is to return this and go look for another one, if they still have any.

Returning went smoothly, the lady filled out the paperwork, checked if what I'm saying it's true, then refunded the money. So I went in to look for another. To my surprise, there were still plenty on the shelf.

Opening sealed boxes in a shop is a very ugly thing, I never do it, but in this case I had no choice. So I opened a new one, of similar color and to my surprise, the screen was on, with some marks already, possibly from touching the box. I tried to turn it off, but without any luck. As I said, there were plenty on the shelf and I could have tried them out till I could find one that was working but what would have been the point? Who can guarantee me the it won't become faulty after a day or two?

I put the tablet back in the box and walked away. I wasn't happy, but it was the smartest choice.

What's The Lesson Learnt Today?

Don't fall for cheap 💩, buy a decent one. I'm going to look around to see how much I would need for a decent drawing tablet and start making plans of buying one.

thank you for showing us this product. I believe we should stop using paper, and this would be a great starting point. We could make notes written on this tablet and save the pages directly within Google drive. Excellent purchase, in my opinion

Increasing our green footprint is a goal we should all have. I love paper and have plenty, which, after use I drop at the recycling points, but using an LCD tablet is a very different experience.

How I wish I am good in drawing too but no luck😂. Can draw only a stick figure.

Hope you can it tomorrow and replaced it with a better one😃

Unfortunately no luck as the one I tried today was not any better. So now I got my money back and have no tablet.

I don't think you need talent to start drawing. You can learn and evolve in time. I don't want to be an artist, I want to have some fun.

I saw it as well in Lidl, I played with it for a while, but then decided not to buy it. The one I used was working perfectly, but I did not liked that you can not connect it to download the content on phone or PC.

Hi Erikah

This seems like it was a dud purchase and you should insist on a refund or at least get them to show you the product before hand to make sure that it's not second-hand because that one certainly didn't look new.

I've worked on various tablets, iPads and the like and the way I see it is that the more expensive ones are more expensive because they tend to offer you more flexibility and a much more reliable product. This one would be fine to start on but it would drive me nuts to not be able to edit certain sections of something I was drawing for example. Maybe that's an interesting challenge that I'm just not willing to take on (yet). I'm keen to hear what the outcome is tomorrow when you return it.

Oh, no, this is not second hand as I got it from Lidl, so the system "is self served", but you can return it within 30 days. I got a refund this morning, without any problems. The cashier tried the tablet herself and could not turn it off either. I wrote the cause on the refund paper, signed it and got my money back.

I know the expensive ones are expensive for a good reason, but I need to define how much I am willing to invest in a device I may not use 😳

Hi Erika

Yes, that's the thing, it shouldn't have looked second hand when you got it and those marks on the screen looked like it had been used. Very weird. I'm glad that you were able to get the refund, that's a good thing as it's not money wasted and you can maybe find a different one that will suit your needs that will actually power on and off like it's meant to. 💻

Hi @erikah, welcome to the community. For this your first unboxing post, it's pretty good, likewise I share with you a post I wrote for the community, with suggestions that may be useful when you are going to share unboxing post.

Too bad this device came defective, that has happened to me a few times and it's frustrating to get home to use the device and it doesn't work. I bought a samsung tablet some time ago (the cheapest one compatible with an S-Pen), I bought it to be able to work for some health issues, but I decided to make the sacrifice of spending a little more to be able to draw on it, because like you, I want to draw but I'm not a professional, but in time I hope to learn.

I tell you that because maybe in the future, a tablet can be an option that is not so expensive, but fulfills what you want, while you are in the learning process. Thank you for sharing this unboxing in the community!

Thanks for the welcome and the link. I'm going to read it.

Unfortunately it happens to all of us, to buy a product with high hopes and get disappointed in a minute. These products are not what I was looking for, but at least no financial loss happened and I have learnt that I need a good one, rather than a cheap one.

Now I'm looking around to see how much I would need to invest to get a decent one.

Also I'm sorry to hear you've had to go through this as well. It would have been nice to be the only one, but how many cheap or expensive products are there, that are faulty.

Anyway, nice to meet you and thanks for the warm welcome.

t's very good that you thought about saving money instead of going for something more expensive that you might not use later, as it can happen to all of us one acquires something believing it is in perfect condition and it turns out that sometimes it comes with details so it's very good that you think about changing it because it is fair, for your first Unboxing I think it was good anyway the community left a publication where they give us some tips to do it better a big hug for you.

One thing I truly hate is buying things I don't need or won't use. This is a tricky product as I'm not sure yet it's going to worth it. This would have been ok as compared to the other drawing tablet, this is pocket money or even less, but had no luck with it. Now I'm wondering how many will be returned.

Thanks for stopping by and have a nice weekend :)
