Hackberry Emperor and A Monarch
Here's a funny butterfly that likes manure.
This is a Hackberry Emperor. Apparently their larvae feeds of hackberry trees.
They are a medium sized butterfly that is mostly brown with a slight tint of blue on their back.
Here you can see the slight tint of blue on the back. Otherwise the rest of this butterfly is a range of tertiary colors.
The underside of the wings are a bit lighter than the top.
Now to address the elephant in the room... Yes this butterfly likes to feed off poop...
They are also known to feed of rotting fruit and carrion. Pretty gross diet for the little guys.
This one was happily munching on horse poop lol. Fortunately I didn't have to witness it eating a dead animal carcass.
Now for something a bit more graceful. Here's a newly hatched monarch feeding off milkweed.
Quite a few hatched today by the lake. Too bad I missed the larvae and crysalis this year.

I just need to get a shot of one sitting on an animal skull of some kind since they like to feed on corpses.

This is the first time I've seen them around here. Pretty strange butterflies.
I saw my first monarch yesterday, of course no camera at hand...
The first batch must be hatching right now. I have to look closer at the milkweed to see if any crysalis are hanging around.
