The queen of all pests!

Do you know those bugs?

One of the most hated pests in the garden! And one that will always find a way to get to your potatoes!

Colorado potato beetle

This is actually a larva stage. A very hungry stage! They can much bush of leaves in one day... if there is enough of the. Leaf by leaf. And since we do not use any pesticides in the garden, it is a long and quite frustrating battle of picking them manually, spraying the potatoes heavily with water so they drop to the ground, or even just shaking them off from the bush.

One thing I have to give them though - they look freaking cool on the photos! The colours are just spot on. Orange with some dots on lovely green leaves. They do not know how to camouflage, but do the colour mean they are not tasty? How come no bird or bigger insect come eat it. There is plenty for everyone :)

How come no bird or bigger insect come eat it.

The warning coloration of the larvae signals them "I am poisonous, stay away!" And indeed, they can make use of a defensive secretion. Nevertheless, in its original habitat (North America) some birds and other insects are eating it.

That's what I thought. Otherwise birds would have lots of free food.
Thanks!
