Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg Bullish on Self-Governing Communities?

Well Mr Zuckerberg, I got news for you!

Self-Governing Communities are here and on the Steem blockchain! Personally, I do not think I have explored their full potential but for now it's pretty early in their development lifecycle to make a final determination.

I am not yet aware of any Steem app that has integrated the community feature but that may be due to their still being in the Beta state. For the end user, this has a limiting effect to their utility. For example, doesn't seem to be any way to post a @dtube video to the @steemflagrewards hivemind community

Even if it is in it's relative infancy, do believe we as stakeholders of Steem can boast that we were one of the first to make such strides to the concept of community self-governence. Give yourself a pat on the back. @roadscape, you deserve a few pats for the hard work in brining your vision to fruition. Does it mean the moonshot is imminent?

I don't think so. At least not yet

The thing is that a technology won't break mainstream unless people know about it so I guess you can say I did my part. I could have got extra credit had I maybe elaborated on how Hivemind communities could serve Me. Yearsley but it's hard to get down in the weeds in 150 characters or less.

Suffice it to say that a seed was planted. Will it grow? Will Robin check out communities? Hell if I know!

But he did like the RT so I'll take it!

Speaking more broadly, self-governence in my humble opinion is indeed the way of the future but I want to give one caveat.

Don't get tunnel vision

That is to say don't become so fixated on your own community or communities that you forget about things that have bearing on the chain as a whole.

The analogy would a soldier living in the barracks police calling common areas. I'm gonna tell you a little secret.

Some soldiers are LAZY.

Yes, it's true and sometimes it takes a senior enlisted getting all up in their shit to get them to clean community areas. What happens if they don't?

Besides SgtMaj giving a good reaming, obviously there is one thing about trash when it's accumulated. Yes, it tends to stink to high hell. The question I have is:

How proficient are we at keeping Steem clean?

  • Are we doing a good job?
  • Have room for improvement?
  • Or do things smell kind of funky?

You know the thing about smells. When you live with them, you tend to get used to it and it becomes your baseline. Then when others come to visit they may give you "the look".

I don't think it's the case here. I think to the above 3 bullets. All are true. Yes, we are doing a good job. Yes, we can do better. And Yes.

Sometimes we come across "the stink'

The sticking point is how we deal with that stink. Of course, governance isn't merely about how we collectively govern the reward pool. It's so much more and extends beyond the concept of Hivemind communities.

Governance is how Steem funds proposals. Governance is how witnesses approve / disapprove code change.
Governance is how we allocate the inflation or rewards.
Governance is how we elect witnesses to secure the network and produce blocks with specialized hardware.

I suppose I could enumerate a number of other things but think you got the gist. What makes Self-Governing models much more appealing is it gives power back to the individual.

This is not so with centralized media so we have something good going. Let's be good stewards and take care of it.

Have you heard of SteemFlagRewards?

We are the premiere decentralized community moderation project on Steem that incentivizes proper use of the downvote feature (Yes, it IS a feature. Used well they benefit us all)

Not gonna plug my footers and stuff today. If you wanna learn more, check this post. We still have a long way to go in terms of development and securing support for said development but we have come a long way as a grassroots movement to promote a higher degree of integrity on chain.

Thanks for all that support the cause

It is your help that keeps the wheels turning so to speak. That and our volunteer spirit. Not everybody has the heart to serve for the greater. While some are good at faking the funk, our track record is proven.

Over 50k rewarded flags and counting!

It's funny how these big figures always talk about decentralised communities but ignore Steem. Even Jack of Twitter was going on about something similar. It's so weird.

Yes, it is! I think they may be just paying lip service to these ideas because they know that is what people want but at the end of the day I am sure both of those love the power and control.

I like to entertain the idea that perhaps Zuck is reaching a crossroads in his life and maybe he is seeing things differently but who knows! He does seem at least a bit more accepting than Jack imo.

One example I can point to is Facebook allowing the controversial political ads on their platform. But then again, nobody can really say whether the motive is about principle or profit. We can certainly speculate though!

Good comment! Thanks
