Dustsweeper FAQ
To capture the answers to some of the most common questions, we here present to you a @dustsweeper’s Frequently Asked Questions.
The word comment is used throughout the text, referring to both posts and comments.
What is dust?
A post or comment is considered to be dust if it has a value of less than $0.02.
Anything less than $0.02 will not be paid out.
So even if your comment is worth $0.019, at payout you will receive nothing. Zero, zilch, zip, nada, nothing!!
What is @dustsweeper
@dustsweeper is a service that will take care of your dust.
@dustsweeper will sweep all your comments on the 5th/6th day and upvote it above the $0.02 threshold.
@dustsweeper will vote with an average value of $0.028. Even if there is a price drop before payout, this should be sufficient to stay above the $0.02 dust threshold.
If in rare cases the value would still fall below the threshold, the users will be refunded by adding $0.028 to the balance.
How can I get started?
Send a small amount STEEM or SBD to @dustsweeper. That’s all!!
Please send it via Steemit and not via an exchange, otherwise the bot can not track the sender.
You need roughly 0.014 SBD for 1 vote. So send any amount larger than that.
What does it cost?
The amount you transfer will be multiplied by 2 and added to your balance.
If you transfer 0.014 SBD you will get $0.028 in upvote value. $0.028 is the average amount used per vote.
Note: $0.001 will be subtracted from the balance per transaction to cover the cost of the reply. Thank you @cadawg for pointing out the abuse condition.
Taking the 50/50 reward model, curation rewards, and the current STEEM/SBD prices into account, the return from the vote itself is currently returning nothing. That is the whole idea and your gain is purely from the saved dust.
So in other words, the service doesn't cost you anything. You can see it as making a deposit where the money will be returned when the dust is saved by the bot.
What is the exact upvote value?
The aim is to have a $0.028 upvote value. But due to a rounding mechanism in the blockchain reward model, the exact value will vary. The bot is set to never vote with a value lower than $0.026 and the max value should be around $0.036.
The exact upvote value will be used when reducing your balance.
When does @dustsweeper vote?
At the moment @dustsweeper is voting roughly every 6 hours. But we will increase this to come close to once a day. There is no need to vote more frequently as we will capture all comments anyway. We currently have it set to a lower value to better get an understanding of the demand.
Why did @dustsweeper not upvote my post?
@dustsweeper is currently set to stop voting if the Voting Power drops to 50%. So the most likely cause for missed votes is due to high demand. We are trying to adjust the SP to make sure we match the demand, but it is not a guarantee.
Missed vote doesn't mean @dustsweeper skipped you. If @dustsweeper needs a break, she will start again from where the same spot where she took the break.
Which comments qualify?
Comments with a value larger than $0 and smaller than $0.025.
Comments with only self-votes are excluded.
Does it matter when I join?
No, even your old comments will qualify for @dustsweeper.
So if you join today and have a 4-day old comment, it will be upvoted by @dustsweeper roughly a day from now.
Can I Send A Friend @dustsweeper As A Gift?
At this moment you can't, but within a week or two we will release an update where this will be possible.
How much is my balance?
At the moment @dustsweeper will send you a comment if your balance runs low and when your account is completely out of funds.
You will also get a balance update whenever you transfer an amount larger than $0.001.
In the next update, we will open a Discord server with a Dustsweeper bot. That will allow for balances and stats to be checked on-demand.
Can @dustsweeper be used when I upvote other people?
This is not possible at this time but will be possible in a future update. The idea is to make this an opt-in service for those interested.
The idea is this: When you upvote someone with $0.01, @dustsweeper will use your balance to make sure your vote does not become worthless. So with an opt-in, you are helping others to save dust.

@trincowski, you really have to sign up for this service, it not only helps you, but more importantly it helps the people who can only give you a small vote. They will now get a small curation reward for that vote they gave you. And with Pay it Forward focused on smaller accounts, it will be very useful. I had a very packed week this week, so missed getting my "pay it forward" post out. Just a matter of lack of time lately.
I've tested it today... and already got 3 upvotes! Coool! :-D

Just send the SBD. 1 SBD is a good start. You can also send Steem but SBD is fine.
Also when you upvote old posts and comments you might as well do 100% since you don't lose any voting power. lol

I'm struggling seeing how dustsweeper gets me more of an upvote or how the money comes back. How do you check your balance?
They send you a message when your balance is low or you can send them more $ and they will give you your balance. If you self upvote 100% you probably don't need @dustsweeper. You only need it if you get a minnowvote and don't upvote yourself enough to get over the payout threshold.

I think that is a great Idea, I look at a lot of new user post, they simply do not have the funds to participate. But yes a contest with the prize being initial Dust Bank investment for the winner.

I like the idea that the self votes only are excluded. I see so often a comment that makes no sense but it is upvoted by the author. It makes me 'wonder' why they do it.

This is really an awesome initiative! It may not be designed to "return profit" to people but what it DOES do is encourage active curation and upvotes, and that increases interaction, which is good for the entire Steemit ecosystem!

Some of my dust votes have been missed due to the VP of the account being too low as you have mentioned.
Yes, there is currently a hard limit on the blockchain where we can only sustain on average 2000 votes per day. We would hit that around 20K SP. If that happens we would have to add a 2nd account.

Half an hour ago I sent 0.5SBD to @dustsweeper, just to know how much credit I have, but I got no response. I haven't received an upvote in more than one day. Are you having any kind of problems?Could you create a way for us to know how much is our credit?
Hi, we had a crash and Dusty didn't recover automatically. You just received the notification now.
We also had a high demand spike, so it is possible some comments were skipped. It is not so easy to match the needed SP to keep up with the demand.
With the upcoming Discord bot you will be able to check the balance. That should be a good addition for Dusty.

I sent 1 SBD 3 days ago, none of my comments has been upvoted.... am I misunderstanding how it works? I have comments due for pay-out in less than 1 hour as I'm writing this with no dustsweeper upvotes.... Thank you in advance for your answer.

No, not yet, after re-reading this article, though, I noticed they say this:
"Which comments qualify?
Comments with a value larger than $0 and smaller than $0.025."
I think they should state more clearly that only comments which have received an upvote will be taken in considerations and topped by @dustsweeper !!!
Otherwise many other people like myself will join the service expecting a different outcome....
Hi Lastravage, the whole idea with dustsweeper is to save dust. Without upvotes, there is no dust, so nothing to be saved.
What Dust is and what Dustsweeper does, are described under the first two headings. We have tried to keep it short and to the point, but if you have any suggestions for improvements, please let us know.

I've just received my first upvote from Dustsweeper few hours ago, at least a confirmation that the order is in place and active..... I'm gonna give it a go, in the end, I'm new here on steemit, I guess I need some time to understand how everything works.... There could be a couple of reasons for the dust not to be cleaned.
We have a high demand and some days Dustsweeper needs to skip some comments to be able to keep up. We have set a minimum threshold for the Voting Power where Dusty stops voting.
Self-votes are not allowed, so the comment needs to have at least one vote from someone else.
Ok, so, is my subscription still ongoing? I had at least 4 comment with upvotes in the last 3 days, they're all been skipped, I don't upvote my own comments........ Thank you.
I have checked the history of your account and it is all in order.
It is all linked to the increase in demand where the bot had to skip up to 100 accounts in the last few days. So, unfortunately, your comments fell into that window.
2K more SP has just recently been added, so I hope we can keep up with the increased demand.
This has been a godsend for the @classical-radio community account! The little votes of thanks from the community do accumulate and now we can put a little bid bot on the curation posts to return the share of the SBD back to the community!

Not sure why it missed that comment (it occasionally misses one of mine too) but I can see dustsweeper votes on other comments that @bafspotlight has made
well, i just signed up. I have a bunch of friends who are < .01 vote value (as is my vote value)... if i can boost their upvotes to actually count I will consider this a win. (even though i don't actually benefit from it). I suppose if i can convince a few of my friends to do the same, we will all benefit :)
Actually you're the one that will benefit as it is the small votes on your comments that get topped up when your friends vote. When they see you getting paid off they may follow suit.
ok, i see what may have happened... your upvote on my comment is currently worth $0.00 (your actual is 0.001, so more than Null, but less than 0.01. your full VP value is still 0.003... so @dustsweeper will still skip your (sole) upvotes. im going to self upvote my top post here, and see if that gets it above 0.00 but below 0.02 so @dustsweeper will upvote it

I also lost 0.001 on this... I also missed self-upvoting this one- that would have bumped it into profit range
Nah, I don't think I did. Depending on the steem price the initial voter sometimes gets a very small curation reward, but the main aim is to ensure that the person who made the initial comment that got the vote is rewarded and stopping that first from being turned to dust.
As for the exact maths behind it all, @davemccoy and @danielsaori are your guys. I'm just a fan of the emd product
upon reviewing, i dont think my current vote value is even enough. according to http://steemit.serviceuptime.net my vote value is only 0.006.
My original post would still only be valued at 0.007...
confirmed... payout shows 0.01, but breakdown shows .00 for steem, SBD and SP... lets see where this post lands

You don’t have to put anything in the memo. If you transferred 0.1, your account is now active and Dustsweeper will take care of your dust. 👍
How do I send you the SBD to get the upvotes? Do I have to send SBD everytime to get an upvote, or only once. Having a bit of trouble understanding how this works
Hey aaliyahholt! Thanks for asking... No you don't have to send it in everytime to get an upvote... We designed it so that you send in a "deposit" of sbd and you will get a certain amount of upvotes. So if you send in $1 sbd (which we recommend) then you will get $2 worth of upvotes... You will get these upvotes and @dustsweeper will then notify you as you get close the using it up.. But if you send in $1 sbd you will get about 70 upvotes so it might be awhile! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

She will search through your feed every day and try to find dust to upvote... When she finds it, she will automatically upvote you so you can collect it. You don't have to do anything more. When the balance gets low, she will even let you know that... (note: you will get around 70 votes for per sbd)... So sit back and relax and she will start working within 6 hours checking! :)

yes it will alert you through a comment on your post... You will get 2 low notices and then a you're out notice.

One more, question, will Dusty upvote on the time you posted on the 6th day, so say you posted at 12 O'clock, so Dusty will upvote at 12 on day 6?
no... all comments and posts have their own clock.. dusty will go in the 5th or 6th day and upvote when the comments/posts are that aged... it does it automatically, but based on its quenue... it works on 6 hr cycles
oh, because I have a post on its 6th day and it hasn't gotten an upvote yet
@aaliyahholt sometimes it might be on rest and can miss some... we have readjusted the formula so that it upvotes everyone in the quenue at least 2x each cycle... That will cut down on the super big commenters taking all the voting power.... Let me know if you notice a difference starting tomorrow... We just made that change today
after my render of Ada Wong from Resident Evil, my post haven't gotten upvotes, nor have my comments. So is Dusty on her rest like you said?

We have some filters in place to handle the high demand and to make sure we spread votes among all users. So there is no guarantee that all posts/comments will be processed.
I've checked your account and you have received at least 2 votes almost every single day. 2 votes is the minimum with the current filter.
I also noticed that some of your posts have received downvotes. Although the value shown on Steemit is $0.00, it could be that it is -$0.001. So these posts would have been ignored.
We are working on increasing the SP and optimizing the settings to be able to deliver the most possible number of votes. But at least nothing is wrong and you have received votes from Dusty.

Idk why anyone would down vote me, I am not doing anything wrong. But I am getting spam comments every time I post, they cannot penalize me for that. Least they can do is tell me what I am doing wrong so I can stop it, I guess I'll have to play Blues Clues until I figure it out. Unless you can figure out what's causing me to be down voted so I can stop.
I just replied to your latest post. Have no idea myself. The spam comments are on everyone's blog so that is not it. It must just have been something you wrote on a post or in a comment that set off someone's trigger-happy downvote-finger. ;)

Is the dust threshold variable?
Since the Steem price decreased one could assume the 0.02 dust threshold also decreases.....?
Sorry, I forgot the get back to you.
The threshold for the minimum payout is fixed at 0.02.
So with a lower STEEM price, we should have more comments not making that threshold.
I guess that also means a bigger part of the reward pool goes to the Steemonians having posts/comments above the threshold?

Thank you @danielsaori , dustsweeper first came to my attention in the creative chat run each Monday on the steemit ramble discord channel. I’d only caught the tailend of the discussion, so I was still unclear what it meant. It wasn’t until I saw a comment by @doomsdaychassis recommending someone else use it because it all adds up, that I’d thought to give it a go. I was surprised it was so easy to get started and it’s been effectively upvoting all my dusty payouts. :)
Love this service, so you have my teeny tiny Witness vote! Tbh, even though I like to let people know they’re appreciated making an effort to comment, I’m no longer so keen to upvote people’s comments anymore with my 0.01 upvote. I didn’t realize it was dust. So a gifting service would be lovely so I can at least use it for those I want especially to support. It’ll be handy too as it’ll prompt them on the usefulness of this service.
I’m still unclear why our transfer gets doubled. Where are the funds coming from out of this? I’m curious...

Thanks for the reminder and sorry I missed the comment.
The doubling of your transferred amount is linked to how STEEM's reward system works.
If I upvote you with $0.028, 25% of that will be taken away for the curation reward.
The remaining part is split 50/50, 50% SBD and 50% SP. (assuming the default setting)
The SP part is calculated taking into account that the system thinks SBD is worth $1.
So at this moment, your total reward would be around 0.019.
When we released @dustsweeper, that value was very close to 0.014, but the sharp price drop has actually made it more profitable.
The idea is that the vote itself shouldn't bring a profit, the profit should purely be from the saved dust. In a future update we will make this calculation more dynamic so it will adapt to current market conditions.

Thanks for comprehensive reply @danielsaori. I’m not great at maths, but I’m assuming you might have typo-ed and meant 0.025 to reach a 0.019 return? I reluctantly pulled out the calculator to see what you meant. :)
What I’m reading is that the intention is to ensure we’re not out of pocket, the doubling effect was put in place. I’d actually not even considered the reward system with the curation, and that we are only getting back 50% of the SBD at payout with the other 50% in SP locked away. Thanks for being clear on that.
So the mystery remains for me though, where are the funds coming from. But even as I’m writing this, I’m imagining that this doubling effect is really just the value you’ve recorded on your system to ensure we get the equivalent of value in upvotes to balance the SBD returns for the money put aside to rescue our dust. So that any SP gained is just bonus and negates the -25% curation?
As I said, once people start talking numbers I get lost, and I’m sure you have a detail paper on this. I just wanted to get the basics right so I can confidently recommend it to others. I rarely take an interest in these kinds of projects, but dustsweeper seems like a very useful service. ❤️

@danielsaori @davemccoy I have seen the dustsweeper name around for a while but today read a post about it (by @curatorcat) and finally understand the concept. I am confused though. Some posts and comments do in fact pay out even if they are under $.02. Although I already knew this to be true, I ran a quick SteemSQL query to pop up some results to show it - see screencap for examples of comments that paid out recently well under $.02
Have you checked if it was in fact true that posts/comments under $.02 don't pay out?
EDIT - now that I am poking around more, I am not seeing payouts of less than .01 though. There may be a minimum .01, checking into that now. But there are definitely payouts between .01 and .02
EDIT 2- part of what was confusing me is that there are apparently two different "dust threshold" terms on Steem blockchain :) I was familiar with the voting dust threshold that is being changed under HF20, which has nothing to do with a minimum payout. But I am still confused as to why I see comments paying out under $.02 :)

Hey Carl, its what he said :P .... The STU is what we mean by what has to be above 0.019 in order to pay out. So if it shows .02, then it might be only .016 and there would be no payout. :)

if you are registered in the program, you should get up to two upvotes per day. I use steemnow and I see two votes almost everyday, somedays it's one.
