avatar

Hi everyone! It is that time again...Thursday is Butterfly Day and Insect Day Giveaway- Week 34! Gather around the Insect Pub to see butterflies and other insects from around the world, and to make new friends. Post your butterfly and other insect photos, or art work for a chance to win Steem Basic Income shares. A minimum of 2-SBI will be given away; 1-SBI for photos and 1-SBI for art work. If no art work is submitted, then 2-SBI will be given away for photos. Depending on how many entries there are, I might be able to give away more. Entries will not be judged and winners are chosen at random. You have 6 days for entries in this post and then a new one will begin. Thanks to all for your entries. I have really enjoyed your photos. There are 3 winners for Week 33 and they are: @sunscape, @hangin and @annephilbrick. Congratulations!

Here are the rules for the Giveaway.

1-One submission per person per week.
2-All photos and art work must be your own work. Photos and art work from the internet will not be accepted.
3-Make your own butterfly or insect post and use one of these tags: #butterflyday or #insectpub.
4-Important! To be entered in the Giveaway, you MUST put the link to your post in the comments below.
5-Upvotes to this post are not necessary but would be greatly appreciated, and might allow me to give away more prizes.

I am looking forward to seeing your butterflies and other insects!

Last week I showed you the Banded Woolly Bear Caterpillar. This week I will show you the Giant Leopard Moth Woolly Bear Caterpillar.

I found this woolly bear caterpillar one night on my back porch that has outdoor carpeting, in case you are wondering about the weird looking background. I gave it some violet leaves to eat which allowed me to get a few photos. The Giant Leopard Moth Caterpillar has shiny black bristles called "setae". Its body has red bands which can be seen when it stretches or curls up in a ball. This is to inform predators that they don't taste good.

A very hungry caterpillar.

These caterpillars like to eat the leaves of violets, dandelions, sunflowers and pokeweed. These are all available in my yard and my neighbors yards. This is a large caterpillar. When full grown it is 3 inches long.

Look closely and you will see a few of the red bands.

When warmer weather arrives, it will emerge as a beautiful Giant Leopard Moth.

Thanks for stopping by!

All photos are my own.

Wow! 3" long! That's a big wooly bear. Don't believe I've seen them here though I have lots of all 3 plants here. I'll be looking next year.

Hello everyone. A little something extra for the winners this week. I've set aside some Steem to increase my SBI holdings and decided to supplement this contest instead of trying to set up and host my own contest at the moment.
5 SBI added to each of the winners =)

Will continue to do this for the next few weeks through Christmas till the new year.
Good luck everyone and thanks for participating.

Hello Dear @whatisneew! This one really looks like a bear and I see those red bands too. But for soem reason, we don't have these big caterpillars here in our gardens, only the small green ones. Unless of course we go for walk to wetland conservation area, I usually see white and black hickory tussock moth caterpillars. Apparently they are venomous. I took photo of one last year. However, today I have something else for you:

Lol. I have been having a grand time doing some curation for upmewhale! I love seeing my deserving friends get those generous votes!

They say they are common, but I have only seen a giant leopard moth once in my life!

I thought it might be you! It sure was a wonderful and unexpected surprise, and I can't thank you enough. So nice of you to help so many. 1-SBI coming your way to thank you. Hugs!

I have only seen one giant leopard moth once also and that was many years ago.

Thanks for the sbi! I love curating for eSteem and upmewhale. Not only nice votes, but they are really nice people and they are working so hard to make Steem succeed.

Do you think leopard moths are active at night and that is why we don't see them?

My pleasure! That is the least I can do. I am not familiar with eSteem or upmewhale but it is good to know that they are nice and it is great that they are helping Steem to succeed. I am in for the long haul.

Leopard moths are nocturnal and they are attracted to light. I leave my porch light on most nights during the summer to attract moths.

Here is your SBI. Thanks again Melinda! : )

I really don't like that kind of forecast for you. Are you in better physical shape if you have to shovel snow?

We got lucky. It was just a dusting. No way, I am not in better physical shape. Now that one made me laugh. I am worse but I will get it done. : )

Well let's pray for a milder, shorter winter and if it snows a big amount some neighbor kids will be available to hire!
