The Saltwater Fisherman ~ Inspiration To Art

‘The Saltwater Fisherman’ ~ By B D Miller

A Few Days Ago ..

I had a hankering to draw something utilizing pen and ink. I am not the fondest of using pen and ink, because it has always been a challenge for me. Ink is also very unforgiving. I usually put a line somewhere I didn’t want it, and destroy the artwork by trying to correct it with the addition of even more lines where I didn’t want them. It becomes a torturous cycle that ultimately ends up with the work lying in the trash can and me being bitter about wasting my time. Despite all of this, I gave it yet another chance to prove my gut feelings wrong. I will let you decide for yourself, should it make it into the pile of finished works or the trash pile? :-/

I Feel I Surprised Myself ..

A little bit with this piece, now that it is finished. As I am writing this and staring back and forth at ‘The Saltwater Fisherman’, I am doubting myself already; Is it really finished? I almost want to work on the sky a bit more. It sort of feels unbalanced to me in some way. I don’t want to get off track, so I will go back to what surprised me about it. I am actually a slight bit proud of myself. For one, I saw it through, even though I was feeling discouraged throughout the process. Secondly, in my opinion, it doesn't look half bad for my below amateur abilities with pen and ink. I am going to leave it at that.. Otherwise this little success will be gone in a flash.

The Inspiration ..

I derived my inspiration from my experiences with fishing, when browsing through the fishing.com website. I was feeling a little nostalgic about fishing, or at least the act of fishing. Fishing has always brought me to some pretty beautiful and relaxing spots. To be quite honest, I don’t care about the fishing as much as being submerged in the tranquility of nature. I haven't been fly fishing for a good long time. Time has a way of whooshing past us. Since I can’t seem to get a trip planned, I will settle on escaping through my mind with a little help from this inspiration and the act of creating art.

This is the picture I used for my inspiration and reference ..

For Those Who Fish..

Or If you know someone who likes to fish, and are looking for a gift, this article may be worth the read. It’s called, “Best Fishing Gifts for Every Type of Fisherman”. Here is a quick excerpt from the article:

There’s nothing like seeing the joy in a fisherman’s face when you give him something for his next fishing adventure. It’s like watching a kid catch a fish for the first time. It never gets old!
You can’t really go wrong when it comes to buying a fishing gift. Whether it’s a trendy shirt to sport out on the water or a gadget he’s never used before but has always wanted to try, the fisherman in your life won’t be able to wait to put your gift to good use.
Now, if your fisherman likes a certain style of fishing or has everything Bass Pro Shop could ever sell, then finding the perfect gift can be a bit harder. And that is why I am here to help! I, too, have an eclectic collection of fishing gadgets. Below are my top gifts for every type of fisherman.

Now For The Process ..

I worked on this piece for a few minutes here and there over the last few days. When some free time presented itself, I picked up my pad and got to work. Even though I beat myself up on my inability to deliver solid pen and ink work, I enjoyed the process. Unfortunately there is not a lot for me to explain when it comes to the process. I started out by laying in some of the more dominant features, then layered in the rest as the piece evolved. I kept the source picture attached to my art pad, for quick and easy reference. Keep in mind, when I typically use a photo to work off of, the finished results are similar but not an exact match. I put enough pressure on myself to create something realistic looking, that the addition of creating an exact match would essentially be devastating to my artistic self worth. I refuse to put that pressure on myself for these types of creations! :-)

I wanted to include a picture of my inspiration photo clipped to my art pad. I just clip it on with a good old fashioned paper clip.

A Summary Shot ..

As always, I like to include a photo that sums up the entire process in one easy to look at shot.

About Me ~ The Artist

My art work incorporates a wide variety of subject matter, including landscape, seascape, cityscape, and still life images. My works are the product of a continuing process of exploration through which I seek to portray personal and visionary interpretations of my surroundings. My paintings are impressions of places and events from everyday life, an interpretation of my imagination, and personal responses to what I see and feel on a daily basis. More recently I have invested generous amounts of time into my landscape painting. I am surrounded by natural and man made beauty, which inherently presents itself in the tri-state area, and almost demands that I paint it.

Not everything is art. Art is not everything, but it comes close. Art is everywhere and all the time. Art makes you experience the beauty of the world, the people in it, and the places we call home. Art itself is so influential that it can tell stories, show feelings, and express passion or fury. Art exists in addition to language; expression of sensations and thoughts, revealing a way of thinking too subtle and delicate for words.

For me art requires love, honesty and perseverance. In return, it reveals some personal, non-analyzable, and creative untamed passion. For the public, art with its magnificent beauty, improves mood and health and builds better human beings and communities. It engages the intellect, softens the heart, strengthens the soul and frees the spirit.

bdmillergallery, I Need Your Help!

Both @ArtTurtle and @Artopium (and perhaps soon @thejollyroger) are being needlessly downvoted by themarkymark. The more the delegator bots
are downvoted the less they will be able to upvote your content so this is an indirect attack on you! This is happening out of
pure vindictiveness as you know these bots are not spam and are powered by your steem power. Please help out by upvoting this comment
in order to counteract themarkymark's downvotes. Then please use your new downvote pool to downvote themarkeymark. He is a witness
and is abusing his power as such. Please unvote him for witness here.
He creates blacklists of thousands of Steemians he deems "inappropriate". I believe he is a majority cause for the drop in
the price in steem as he wrecklessly downvotes random content causing people to want to leave Steemit. Since he has over 500,000 SP
he can do quite a bit of damage, so it's going to take a concerted effort to get him to stop. Thank you!
