Part 83

The screams were rising in a fever pitch and seemed to echo in Magna's mind more than it did in her ears. Time seemed to slow and drag on as inch by inch of the armored arm revealed itself from the magic circle.

Magna realized that it was the red arm that was the source of the screaming in her skull. It was a simultaneous triumphant cry, enraged roar and indignant scream. All of those and more.

The link in her soul echoed these wild emotions and the more of the arm that came out, the more time seemed to slow down.

Her sense of smell on the other hand was awash of scents of so many kinds and sources she felt as though she had stumbled head first into a spice shop.

The scents of the Gods, the Life Drinker, the Mage and the Revenant was too mixed up and she could not understand any of it.

Meanwhile Adrian was also experiencing a pull from the rotting, decayed arms that rose from the magic circle opposite his position. They rose and with it, he did not hear a sound, instead it was dead quiet. What he felt was a presance. It was oppressive and inch by inch of the decayed, unliving, undying flesh revealed itself the sensation deepened. It drowned out all other sources of stimulus. First it was sound, dulled and oppressive like a sudden falling night.

Then came a dimming of light and even memory. It was as though it was difficult for Adrian to remember what was outside the church... or even the other room in... the... something... oppression, presence, consuming all, pulling everything towards it...

Adrian tore his eyes away from the arm for the brief second that he could manage and saw Magna squint as though overwhelmed... indeed, the exact opposite to what he was experiencing. He strained to hear what should be a commotion.

He could see Lucien and Adiran's mouths working in spellcraft or argument, he could not tell.

Then his attention was drawn to the arms again.

The shoulder was coming! Soon the head would come forth!

Magna's eyes were nearly shut, she tried to block one ear with her free hand but it did nothing to make the sound less.

The shoulder was coming! Soon the head would come forth!

King Sebastian, third of his name, monarch of Clarprati and protector of the Realm... doubled over on to the floor, his arms and chest growing to massive proportions. His finger nails grew into long cruel claws that scored lines into the stone floor of the church as he clenched his hands.

He could feel his jaw distending as it had never done before, his mouth felt thick with enlarged fangs. He was a more powerful and wild beast now than he had ever been...

...and yet, the feedback loop of emotion that came from his neice, the Princess of Dragonshold was humbling. The sheer amount of rage, hate, pain and loathing that poured to Sebastian through Magna... he had the impression of an essence that stood on the other side of the girl.

Usually, he felt the greater of the two but in this moment he felt the lesser of the two and he was glad that Magna stood between his soul and that of the malignant flame that burned at the edges of his consciousness.

He watched Trix... she was also effected by the link to the Prince and the OTHER deity. It was different. There was no rage... but there was a forboding and the power and emotions that flowed through that link made the woman's shadows deepen so extremely that the entire room seemed to dim and grow cold.

Between them crouched a beast, but it was many times bigger than Sebastian, even in his current hulking form. He did not know that the shape changer was capable of making himself so large. The beast that he now resembled should be a creature that could not exist.

A massive wolf's face and maw was at the forefront of the creature, its fore-paws were more like those of a massive cat. As they flexed, the nails shone a crystalline purple and where they touched the stone floor, the stone simply seemed to melt away. Its body was thick and heavy, there had been an impression of wings but these had been swallowed up by the form as the shape changer decided that there was no point in flying.

Instead, the beast was now covered in armored bronze scales. Hind legs ended in hooves that had an angular shape to them, the legs were so muscular they would drive those hooves like spears.

Finally, the beast was equipped with a spiked tail that was thick like a club.

How all this was possible Sebastian did not know. He had thought the boy was only capable of transforming into a real animal. Apparently, he was mistaken.

Beyond the three of them stood two ordinary humans who had nothing special about them except faith. That in itself made them remarkable. That they would stand alongside the likes of Sebastian and the others and fight against the same foes seemed insane. And yet there was no denying the Blazeknights.

"The sun is setting!" Anna called.

"They are coming!" Leopold shouted.

Outside in the darkness the howling began. Far away, even further came the eerie bugle of an monstrous elk.

They were coming!
