Part 75

Mortis growled. "You are awfully eager to be helpful. Why is that?"

I want to see you succeed.

"No. I don't accept that. There is something more to it than that." Mortis said quietly. "There is something that you are not telling me."

Why would I withhold information from you?

"Because you scheme." Mortis growled. "All of you Gods do. You play a great game. A game for which the rest of us have to pay for. A game that affects the whole world and all of its continents and its creatures."

The voice was silent for a while. I admit that the Gods were wasteful in the past. We were arrogant. But there is an illness on this world. Remember that beast that came from the woods! That is an example of what happens when one of our kind is corrupted. Her usual demeanour was to care for the forest and the vale and the creatures. She would bless the hunters and the harvest.

"She? It is a woman?"

How could I not know my own sister?

Mortis was silent. Familial bonds and love. That he could understand. He growled. "Fine. How do we do this?"

Merely attempt to use the magic as you always have. Your blood magic is depleted, but I shall be the source.

Mortis grunted. He raised his arms and focussed his will. It was strange and usually he would need to focus on the blood in his body, the fresh blood and channel it from there. Instead he reached out and it was as though an invisible hand put itself into his own.

Power blasted from his palms, pure kinetic force. The shockwave sent the debris flying in the alleyway and smashed it all into the far corner, revealing a door on the side of the wall.

"Thanks." Mortis muttered and walked slowly towards the door.

You are most welcome. Let's get these humans inside. I do not think they have much of a chance out here for too long.

Just then Derrick, Anna and Leopold came rushing around the corner, Leopold's sword was drawn. "What happened?" The Blazeknight asked.

Mortis gestured at the alleyway and the door. "I made a path."

Derrick was half-carrying Anna. He whined in a canine fashion. I thought it was said that your magic was depleted. That you needed more blood.

Mortis shrugged. "I did what I had to do." He ignored the sounds of awe and adoration from the Blazeknights while being keenly aware of Bellum's joy at the reaction from the mortals.

Mortis ignored all of them. "Stay back." He commanded. "We do not know what awaits us inside or if this door is booby-trapped." He did not wait for confirmations or consent and merely pushed on. He placed a gauntleted hand on the door handle of the wooden door, his mind searching for a sense of foreboding. He found none.

He slowly opened the door. There had been no trap. The moment the door was just a hand-span open he could feel a sensation he had not expected. He stopped dead and waited. Trying to get a sense of the direction Magna and Adrian were in. He could feel them, moving in the ruins.

"What is it?" Leopold asked. "Is something wrong?"

"It is strange. It should not be possible but the blood of my family is here." Mortis said and opened the door further. The doorway led to a stairway that went directly up. Standing at the top of the stairs was a figure, bright light begin it making it difficult to see.

"Who's there?" The figure said. "You don't want to come in here uninvited! Things could get ugly!"

Mortis recognized the voice, but it was hard to believe. He spread his arms wide. "There is no need for threats. We are family after all."

The robed figure swept down the stairway and came to a stop at the doorway. He held an ashwood staff in both of his hands. "Mortis?!"

Mortis would have smiled is he could at the shock on the bearded man's face. "What a strange place to find you Adiran."

The Adirans and Adrians are getting quite much😂.

Thought the mage was captured by a god, 15-20 chapters ago.
