Part 49

Magna tried to squash her rising panic. She could fight against foes made of real things, even monsters and the undead and she would not be afraid. She was not afraid of the dark or heights but this place was slowly sending her over the edge.

Deep down inside her there was a hysterical panic at what was happening to her senses. Never mind magic, she could not smell anything. She held a sleeve up to get nose and took a deep whiff. There should have been a smell but there was nothing.

And now sound was becoming an oppressive void, as though she had never known what a sound was. She called out again but she could not hear herself.

This place was killing her slowly. Maybe soon she would not be able to see of breathe next.

What is going on?

She jumped a little and looked at Derric next to her.

"I can hear you." She said and realized again that she could not hear herself. She mouthed slowly and used hand movements. "I hear nothing. But you, I hear as though it is a real voice."

This was different from killing her. This place was... inverted. The magic did not work. They could hear Derric with their ears instead of their minds. She could not project her thoughts like Derric could, but if she could it was likely that it would make a sound here.

Her sense of smell was gone and her hearing of sounds as well. She went back to the wall that she touched. There was a... feeling... a texture that had nothing to do with the stone that she touched. This was... the inversion of her smell of magic.

"Call Adrian. Call the others." She mouthed to Derric.

I don't understand.

Her panic raised to dangerous levels. This place was going to kill them! If Adrian did not come now then they would run out of magic and get stranded in this strange place. She would not even die honorably with her sword in her hand.

Perhaps she would, while fighting off the madness and doing battle against her family as they all went insane.

Just as the panic reached its apex she saw movement to her side and saw a large figure running at a full sprint towards them from the one side. Sword out, King Sebastian ran just past her and stopped, looking around wildly.

He turned towards her and mouthed slowly. She stared at his mouth. "What is wrong?"

My panic called him over. She sighed with relief.

"I called and could not hear myself. I know that none of you could hear us."

But you guys can hear me right?

They turned to the wolf and nodded. Magna turned and saw that the others were also running down the corridor. Finally her brother was there. He would fix everything.

She wondered briefly what it was like not being the twin that had the strength to face dangers, but then realized that in some ways that Adrian was stronger and braver than she was.

Not with weapons or strength. He was weak. Despite that weakness he had the courage to face the same dangers as she and even others that she did not even understand, but without the skill with a sword to defend himself. He had to instead rely on his magic.

His courage made her feel a lot better. It was not strength she realized. More a willpower and a dauntlessness in the face of this... unspeakable and unfathomable horror.

She waved him over. She was instantly comforted that her twin could understand her hand gestures and hand movements better than anyone. She brought him to the wall and placed his hand on it.

He stood and breathed for a few moments and then nodded to her and smiled. "Thank you." He mouthed.

Alright everyone, gather around. Magna stared at Adrian, realizing that she could hear him.

Her twin shrugged. Telepathy. I figured it out. Mortis. I need you to stand next to me the whole time. I shall need to use you as a vessel to open the final door and get out of here.

Mortis said nothing. There was no point. He mere stood next to Mortis, at the ready.

Everyone get closer. Mortis and I will be through last. This time, no distractions until the door is closed!
