Songs from 1913

It's time again for Three Tune Tuesday, that day of the week where members of the Hive community shares three songs of their liking with the rest of the community.

I take a slow, relaxing approach to Three Tune Tuesday: I like to share pre-1924 78rpm songs from my collection, and record them while playing on an appropriate time-period windup phonograph. I encourage you to take a few moments and slow down with me. Settle down, close your eyes, and take yourself back.. way back.. in time, to a distant uncle's parlour in the early 1920's. There are comfortable seats, pleasant conversation, and old music.

This week I have three songs from 1913 to share.

Gems from The Purple Road

The Purple Road was an operetta that opened in 1913 in New York. It's largely forgotten today, save for this recording by the Victor Light Opera Orchestra, which performed a medley of it's songs.

A Hunt in the Black Forest

This piece is pretty amazing for what it was able to record acoustically. Back in 1913 there were no microphones and no electric volume amplification; all recording was done acoustically into a large funnel, and all in one take. That they were able to get all these sounds portraying an actual forest hunt onto the record is remarkable.

Rigoletto - Parmi veder le lagrime

Sung by the legendary Enrico Caruso, this is an example of high culture in 1913. The phonograph, which was still a new invention in 1913, revolutionised the way people were able to enjoy music. Bringing not only opera, but one of the most esteemed tenors in the land, into the living room was revolutionary.

1913 Really? I would never have thought to wonder what the music of that time was like. How cool that you brought it to the community. I loved your selection, the first one seemed like a comic book to me. G
