Making A Crochet Bag With Homemade T-shirt Yarn.

Hello Hello Needlework Lovers.

One can say that I've been on a little experimenting journey and so far I have gotten absolutely amazing results.

IMG_20240412_164810_260~2.jpg

Yesterday, I decided to try making yarn with some of my old t-shirts. It was a really interesting process which I documented properly. I shared the documentation and you can find it right here.

After making the yarn, I had a few worries. What if the yarn wasn't good enough for a project? What if the yarn cut off due to the pressure from the crocheting pin? There were a lot of “what ifs” running through my mind till I finally gave it a try today and I would let you be the judge of the outcome.

Material Used

  • Homemade t-shirt yarn
  • 6.0mm crochet hook
  • A pair of scissors
  • Darning needle

Procedure.

First of all, I went in search of my largest crochet hook. I knew very well that the t-shirt yarn would require a large hook size and so I went digging. Sadly, the largest hook size in my possession is the 6.0mm hook size and so I had to make do with that.

IMG_20240413_133158_563~2.jpg

For starters, I made a chain of 15 plus 3 extra chains for turning because I didn't want the bag to be too big. After getting 18 chains, I skipped 3 stitches, turned around and started making single crochet stitches into the remaining 15 chains. In the fifteenth stitch, I made an increase of three, made a slip stitch to seal and then chained two. This gave me the base of the bag.

After the base, it was time to work the body of the bag. I made the body of the bag using double crochet stitches.

Row after row, I kept going, still wondering how the bag was going to turn out. Once I reached the third row, I began to see the beauty of the bag. At this point, I was elated. I do not have a black and white bag of any sort so you can imagine how much I wanted this project to turn out well.

After seven rows of double crochet stitches, I finally decided to make the handle part of the bag.

IMG_20240413_154837_603~2.jpg

On completion, the bag looked a bit too simple and so I decided to add some flavor to it—a tassel!

IMG_20240413_162218_569~2.jpg

Crochet tassels are one of my favourite things to make as I enjoy the process. Initially, I made a tassel with the t-shirt yarn and the tassel was too bulky. I didn't like the way the tassel was popping out so I switched to a regular black yarn (perks of having spare yarn laying around). I made the tassel, attached it to the bag and viola I was done with it.

The bag looks pretty lovely to me. I am still amused as to how I turned an old t-shirt into a crochet bag! I made a few other skeins of t-shirt yarn and I'm excited to put them to use. If you have any suggestions as to what I should make with the other t-shirt yarns, do not hesitate to tell me.

Also, I would love to hear your views on the entire project. Is it an awesome one or is it just meh? Do tell.

Until next time, stay creative!

I love the colors of this bag, it is a very elegant style and it is a very coquettish bag.

Oooooh: @wongi , this is such a gorgeous wee bag - and I adore your process of repurposing old garments, as T-shirts are not the easiest thing to transform into something fabulous! The crocheting of older fabrics is such a great way to bring strength to a material when it is not inherently robust before it's reformed! Beautiful work! Blessings on your day and week dear friend!

This is genius,@wongi 🥰🙌 You upcycled an old shirt! Now that is ticking all the boxes. And you did a great job. I hope you are enjoying your haute couture creation hehe - #visionary #bespokebagsbywongi.
