MODENA CATHEDRAL- “LA GHIRLANDINA”-ROMANESQUE CHURK ITALY
Hello my dear friends,
today I'll tell you about another masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, the Cathedral of Modena called “Ghirlandina”.
Its construction began in 1099 under the guidance of Lanfranco and Wiligelmo. The Romanesque construction was finished in 1184.
In this photo we can see the main facade and the entrance of the cathedral, which is located in Piazza Duomo, the most central place in Modena.
Ciao miei cari amici,
The Cathedral of Modena, with the Civic Tower and the Piazza Grande of the city, they have been included in the list of Italian World Heritage Sites by UNESCO since 1997. The cathedral of Modena is included in the Cultural Itinerary of the Trans-Romanesque Council of Europe.

The last time that I visited it was during my return from one of my exhibition in Parma and I must say that it was a very interesting stage. It has been a long time since I went to this city and it was a pleasure to see it again.
My husband and I walked downtown and when we arrived in front of the cathedral we were enchanted by its beauty,
The main portal of the cathedral is very sober, as the whole perimeter of the church is rich in sculptures and bas-reliefs by Wiligelmo, very decorative.
On the façade there are four slabs sculpted by Wiligelmo that contain scenic sequences "Scenes from Genesis", "Creation of man and woman and original sin","The expulsion from Paradise" that we can see in this photo,"Cain and Abel","Killing of Cain and Noah's Ark"
On the sides we can see two limestone lions called stilofori, which each support a column, represent the force that guards the sacred space. In this portal the lions are static while those placed in the “Porta Regia” are dynamic because they have the attitude of someone who is devouring something.
we find these animals in every portal

Its plan has three naves divided between them by pillars and columns with Corinthian capitals
This is the inside of the church, with the presbytery raised above the crypt where the remains of San Gimignano, patron saint of the city, are preserved
the elevation of the central nave is made up of three levels in the first level we can see pillars and columns, the second level there are the trifore (triple-light windows) and in the top there are the single-light windowsm called monofore.
The pulpit, rich in sculptures, is the work of Enrico da Campione and was built in 1322.

I was struck by the "Altar of the Statuettes" located in the left aisle all made in terracotta, in its time polychrome by Michele da Firenze, dated 1440.
Modena is a very quiet city, traffic is limited in the center, people go on foot and by bicycle. In the historic center on Sunday mornings we can still find groups of elderly people talking in the square or in front of the bar and children playing.
The food is amazing, famous delicacies such as parmesan, ham, tortellini, lasagna, Lambrusco wine and many other good dishes are produced in this place.

If you combine architecture, history and gastronomy, you have me in your hands. Every street in Italy is a museum and the cobbled streets have always seemed to me to give a special touch to a city.

Hello @titti. What a magnificent church! There's always something truly magical when exploring historic landmarks that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the cathedral of Modena. Not only is that edifice gorgeous, but its immediate surroundings are also perfectly serene, quiet, and laid-back with a relaxing atmosphere for an enjoyable experience. And oh, the food and wine; those pictures of them definitely made me hungry - so delicious! Many thanks for the impressive architectural tour of this Romanesque-styled building from Italy!
Thanks to you for your nice words @storiesoferne, I like architecture in general but our country as you know is rich historical buildings so I hope to do something pleasant in publishing architecture from past eras. Bye
