Why ListNerds is the Greenest "Mailer" around

There's lots of posts floating around about ListNerds largely focused on the crypto side or the referral side. I do some marketing and there's another significant difference between ListNerds and other mailers. Per the screenshot above I got some voting to do.

ListNerds is a "Green" Mailer.

That's right. Mic drop.

By design it's now a green machine. Here's why.

I work for a tech software company and I often write documentation for my crew on processes or how something works technically. When I was looking at my ListNerds results, I decided to check and see how the emails looked to me in my email inbox. There aren't any.

Unlike other mailers where I have special folders that I have to filter my emails to, ListNerds isn't spamming me with email from other members into my Gmail inbox. That's wonderful!

I checked. Twice.

It's a beautiful walled garden

This is a league of folks who all agree to login and read messages from each other to each other.

That means that there's only the storage of the bits once on the ListNerds backend database or storage and not on tons of gmail accounts, other cloud providers and exchange servers. On the cloud services, emails can clog up your storage. Why do this if you can avoid it?

This type of platform by nature of the industry is also comprised largely of marketers who use multiple platforms to get their message out..

Don't forget the cost of transmitting emails

On a traditional email-based mailer there's also the cost of the electricity it takes for the bits that make up the email to fly out to ALL the recipients's inbox storage systems. That's for everyone on a traditional mailer, whether each recipient reads the email or not.

Whether the recipient reads the email OR NOT.

It still got sent, and as miniscule as you think it is, its not free. Multiply that by a 25K membership, and you can see that this starts to scale, especially on active platforms, like ListNerds.

It still took electricity to transmit the email to your unread items folder in the cloud. That's non-trivial in cost. Take a look at this screenshot of where I filter emails from other mailers into folders.

The ListNerds Difference

On Listnerds, the transmission cost of a email\message is the cost of the bits to go from their server to the reader's BROWSER while the are logged in to the service only.

WHILE LOGGED IN.

What a great savings on bandwidth compared to other systems.

I LOVE how GREEN ListNerds has become

I am telling you without a doubt that this is UBER green. Man what savings in the grand scheme of things.

I am promoting this post on Hive currently by using one of my Solo mails to our group. It should be a good day to have people read and respond considering it's a US holiday coming up and folks will have time to go by ListNerds and read some emails, errr I mean walled garden messages.

What's your take? Leave a comment below!

I'd love to know your thoughts on the green aspect of ListNerds. @jongolson, would love your thoughts as well.

Sure I do some marketing, so I'd be remiss if I didn't say: check out ListNerds, and see what the hubub is all about, be my guest and use my referral url by clicking this link.

Peace and Love,

-Rob

Listnerds is definitely amazing. I will at least look through the emails even if they are spam because I am looking for posts. I didn't realize that the voting bar went over 100 but is there any way to know what our current max is? I have some CTP staked but I still think I don't have enough on that end.

Hi @jfang003 - I don't think Listnerd subscribers who send mails on Listnerds are sending spam per se (see my comment to @threesteps ). They have a right (within the terms and conditions of what is acceptable etc) to send their stuff even if we dislike what is on offer or wince at their crude methods.

Well maybe that was the wrong word but in the end, it's just something I have no interest in. Especially the ones trying to get my to pay for some random service. I agree that they can do what they want but it just reminds me of all the random advertisement stuff I get in my normal email. Of course they end up unread or in the spam/trash folder after I check them.

Yeah it's something different for sure :)

We figured, a new potential model would be a place / membership site that people actually wanted to be a part of. So keep everything in house. No need to tie up people's inboxes with messages, instead reward people for logging in and taking an active role in the program.

So far, it's working! We'll see how things are in a few months lol

Thanks for sharing this via ListNerds!

I was unable to set my own emails in a folder so this means that everything in the mailing is pretty much jam-packed and scattered lol.
Due to finding the best ways to make money online, I got into many things, from WordPress to warrior plus, JV zoo, and lots more I have over 22000 emails that are unread, every 3 minutes there is always a mail I my inbox.
A good thing to know that I am not ignoring listnerds mails because I want to earn with it.
the others mostly in my mails are always a pitch, so you know, that pisses me off and I have lost a lot from them too.
Now, I stay decentralize and don't stray far from home 🏡

Do you use gmail? You have given us a possible topic for a training video... How to handle your safelist email pile-up!

In addition to green, it is not intrusive, which is what I appreciate the most. Another important thing is that the emails are not lost in a spam folder or mixed with the rest of my regular emails.

I never thought about Listnerds as green, but now I realize that is just one more thing to love about it!

That's what I'm doing. I've got an upgraded account, so today I am upvoting and storing up the mail credits. I have enough for a solo mailer, but I am saving up enough for 5 in a row for an announcement and sequence of posts when 3steps.today goes live. short term patience for long term gain.

I thought about it in that way before. I do like reading emails right on the platform. I have sooo many emails in my inbox from other safelists and now I have to take the time and energy to go through and delete them. There is a cost in that as well. Thanks for pointing this out, Rob. The only thing I like about having the emails in my inbox is that when I do go through them I can open a bunch of tabs at once and get through them more quickly that way.

"I can open a bunch of tabs at once and get through them more quickly"

Nugget!

Gotta love those 1,500 European Safelist Mailer solo ads all opened on multiple tabs and ticking down fast!

Great post, @threesteps, but I have to disagree about one thing (as a mailer owner) that that is the suggestion that mailers send spam.

One key point of safelist mailers is that the subscribers agree to receive members' emails in exchange for the right to send emails to the members. That ain't spam, though the quality of some of the mails we get from safelist members can certainly SEEM like spam!

Back to the main topic... :) I guess there is a cost for storing emails as well as transmitting them. Time to clear out my gmail accounts.

Cheers!

Sorry for the confusion when I say " ListNerds isn't spamming me with email from other members into my Gmail inbox". I didn't mean that what I receive from the any mailer is spam. I guess I refer to any flood of emails like that. In some busy mailers, this is a pretty large amount. Certainly didn't mean any disrespect there David, especially since I belong to your site.

Oh, and as far as cost goes, here's the funny part about cloud storage: Once a company has invested in the drive space to store the data, it doesn't matter (for simple archival costs) whether they store zeroes or ones. So it doesn't cost MORE for them to store it. It just consumes space over time, since the drive is already purchased and the daily electric cost is the same for a 0 or a 1. However, the ACCESS of said data is a different story.

There's a reason why AWS doesn't charge you for the transmission TO their servers, only for the network EGRESS cost and the storage tier you purchase. For data that you don't access much, the AWS glacier tier will get you the date some time soon, but not on the spot, so the cost is lower for that 'cold' storage. But for on the spot S3 storage, yeah space is a premium.

No offense taken, Rob!

That last paragraph of yours rings a bell with me - something I read two or three years ago, most likely in one of Taleb's books... but it seems to be stored in my "glacier tier" (that phrase tickles me)... something to do with the more often something has occurred the more likely it is to occur again and vice-versa which applies to data sorting or something...

Thanks for sharing. Being green can have a lot of factors. Like I wonder what the carbon footprint is in terms of electricity.
It depends on how the electricity is made. Some power is more green than others.
Thanks for the thought provoking post

Some power is definitely greener than others, but using less of any resource is always a greener option. :)
