Catching Up

It is almost the end of March 2021, and summer break is fast approaching. I was scrolling through my Facebook feed when I noticed a lot of posts from my high school friends and classmates about a reunion. They go to the places that we usually go to when we are still in junior high. I am envious because I also miss those spots and I want to catch up with them. With my sister's birthday coming up in three weeks, why not use it as an excuse to visit? It will be my first trip back home since the pandemic. So, without further ado, I searched for the cheapest Cebu-Davao airfare while sharing my plan to return home with ate Bing, who supported me and said it was the right decision for me to return home for a while because it had been almost two years since I had seen my family.

After some consideration and planning in my head, it was time to ask for permission from my parents, and of course, they agreed. I just have to finish all my assessments, and then I’m good to go; they even sent me extra money for souvenirs and delicacies.

Two days before my flight, I went to the city to take a swab test and go to the nearest souvenir store to shop. When I was packing my belongings, ate Bing and ate Vicssie were laughing at me because all of the goods I purchased had already consumed one of my suitcases and it appeared that I was returning from another country.

On the day of my flight, it was pouring heavily. Ate Bing, ate Vicssie, and her friend accompanied me to the airport. We rode a tricycle to the bus station and just took a taxi from the SM City Terminal to the airport. I went inside first to check in; there were only a few passengers, so I managed to check in easily, and I went back outside to grab a bite before we bid goodbye.

The rain stops before takeoff, but it is still cloudy, so there is still some turbulence. It was raining when we arrived in Davao as well. Upon arrival, my uncle, who’s a taxi driver, is already waiting for me outside and is going to drop me off at the bus terminal going to General Santos City, where my parents agreed to fetch me because the van terminal specific to our area is already fully booked because of holy week. Because of heavy rain and traffic, it took an hour to arrive at the terminal. I just gave him some chicharon and piaya and thanked him before I went inside.

It was already past nine in the evening when I arrived in GenSan. I went straight to the hotel where my parents are, and I was surprised to see my father drinking beer outside with my mother's older brother. Since they already have dinner, I just wait for my guy best friend to arrive and dine outside. We went to the nearest fast-food chain and shared lots of stories, and while enjoying each other’s company, we did not notice the time; it was already past midnight. When I laid back in bed, that’s when I felt tired, and while remembering what I did the whole day, I already fell fast asleep.

It was almost time to go when I woke up; my parents already had their breakfast and were waiting for me in the hotel lobby. I did not reach the cutoff time for free breakfast, and my mother gave me an earful for that, so we just dropped by a drive-thru so I could eat. Along the way, I did not fall asleep and just enjoyed the view outside. I was in the front seat, so I had a clear view in front. We had an early lunch at Kiamba, Sarangani because we were about to go up the mountain, and then one more municipality to pass before heading down to the province of Sultan Kudarat.
Coming closer to home and seeing the place I grew up made me feel very nostalgic.

Glad to see you get to reunite with your family. I had the same problem as well, not only I had issues with the papers, the requirements for receiving returning residence keeps on changing.
