NEWBIES INITIATIVE TASK 5: TRIBE TOKENS AND THE USE OF TAGS

avatar

Better late than never .... they say ...

Recently, I had to read up on the newbies initiative tutorial by @samostically on what tribe tokens were and the use of tags; and some other newbies’ entry for the task. I have known about tags and tokens prior to that time but on an infinitesimal level. For the tags, I used to use most of them without any understanding of how some of the work.

In the same vein, I also remember the time I was scouting around the Peakd frontend. And for the first time, I clicked the Hive engine and saw a long list of tokens. I was kind of confused at first so I asked @starstrings01 who then said they were mine. You should see the smile on my face ...😁

Well, enough of that story let’s get down to business.

Why do communities create tokens on Hive?

Basically, we know the essence of communities and how it helps to kind of section or classify contents on the Hive. So, communities create tokens in order to be able to reward their members on their activities or contents attached to their community. My bad! These tokens are also referred to as Tribe tokens or Second layer tokens. They are built on top of the Hive blockchain.

Explain why the use of tags is very important on Hive

Let’s take a step back to some Web2 apps like Twitter. Well, tags on that blue-bird app called “hashtags” are used to classify the kind of content or posts published there. And when you search for a keyword, it enables the algorithms to quickly locate and display the related contents. On Hive, the tags – the label-like thingy at the bottom of posts - have the same functions as hashtags on Twitter. Likewise, it helps readers and curators to find the type of posts they may be looking for. And community-wise, tags provide visibility to posts and their authors. In the end, it enables one to earn tokens on the chain.

List some general tags you know on Hive. Explain the difference between these tags

Some of the first series of tags I knew when I got on board were #hive, #neoxian, #vyb, #proofofbrain etc. Then, I just used them blindly and thank goodness they were general tags so I guess that was why I never got into trouble with any community or so.

The differences? Apart from the similarity in them being general tags, some are associated with their respective communities. For example, the neoxian tag is with the Neoxian community, the Proof of brain community also exists too.

What are the various ways you can earn tribe tokens on Hive.

There are different ways by which a Hive user can earn tribe tokens on the blockchain. They include but are not limited to:

  1. Posting: Publishing post(s) in a community or through certain frontends gives one the opportunity to earn the tribe tokens. For example, posting in the Neoxian community gives you the NEOXAG token.
  2. Engagement: This is what is used to summarize the activities of users such as reading and commenting on posts. I remember the first time I registered on the Leofinance frontend, I got to see I had some #LEO tokens on my profile. It was when I asked questions that I got to know that I got them through engagements I had done in the #Leofinance community because prior to that time I had not published any post there.
  3. Using tags: When tags are used correctly, that is, apart from general ones, if specific tags like #stem are used for a post relating to it, you can earn the token associated with such a community.
  4. Staking: You can get more of a token when you stake the ones you have, you earn at the rate stipulated by the chain.
