Whisky from my son

avatar

I must be getting old when my son can buy be whisky for Christmas. He knows I like a drop and it made the shopping simple for him. He also got me chocolate, so I am very happy. I do not like getting random junk as presents. Luxury consumables are a better gift.

This is Glenfiddich 15 Year Solera Reserve, that Whisky Notes rates quite highly. I have seen various prices, but it is not too expensive. That may have influenced my boy's choice, but I am not complaining. The bottle comes in a sleeve to make it more of a gift item. Glenfiddich (meaning valley of the deer) is a big brand. I have drunk some of their other malts before. I think my dad used to often have a bottle.

Bottle

It is made in sherry and oak casts before being stored in the huge Solera vat that is never completely emptied, so some of it could be older than 15 years. The review mentions various fruit and caramel flavours. It is quite sweet and not too aggressive.

Glass

I thought I would try ice rather than water and it is a good combination. I do not think it needs much watering down. I will let my son have some. We were at a hotel over Christmas and he ordered a Talisker whisky there. That is very different with a more smokey taste that he was not so keen on. I think he is more used to vodka.

On Boxing Day the local morris dancers came to perform in front of the hotel. They are carrying on a tradition that goes back at least 300 years of dancing and then singing the Boar's Head Carol after an actual boar's head is paraded around the crowd. We do have some peculiar old customs and I wonder if people will keep it going as they were all fairly old. You could hear their bells jingling around the hotel for some time afterwards as they enjoyed a drink.

Morris dancers

Cheers!

Very nice. I have some friends who are whisky drinkers but
I can’t tell between them when offered two different ones.
Great you can appreciate a good drink. Even better you boy knows what to buy.

Was the hotel stay a over Christmas choice for a reason - perhaps family stop over location?

I can’t imagine old traditions like the Morris Dancers continuing in another 100 years time. It’ll probably be in VR.

I am no expert, but there are distinct differences in some of them. As I said, some taste quite smokey and some really feel like they are burning your throat. Others in this community describe them better than I can.

The hotel was a way to get the whole family together and reduce the work involved. It was good, but I do like being home again. I have spent too much time in hotels on work trips.

Cheers, man! That seems like a very swell present, especially as it is something you really like👍

Thats a strange custom from those dancers, but strangeness makes a lot of customs cool as longer as no one is getting hurt. Sorry boars, you do not count.

I think the same head gets used over many years. Boars are not too common here these days.

That is sweet and thoughtful of your son to have that gesture @steevc . I haven't tried that whisky yet but the fruity and caramel flavors makes me interested to try one someday.

Cheers to good life and have a wonderful holiday with your loved ones :))

Your son has good taste. I had a bottle of proper twelve for my birthday in may, and I thought it was going to be a bit poor, just a bit of a low quality sales gimmick for conor mcgregor, but I was very pleasantly surprised. I now have an 18 year glenmorangie to open which I’m quite excited about thanks to the lads that work for us. I’ve only ever had the 10 year before, and if that’s anything to go by, it should be awesome.

I'm no expert, but I can still enjoy it. It's nice to have a few bottles to choose from and some are nearly empty. I have a birthday coming up soon, so maybe I will get more.

Live long to get more precious gifts sir. Times like this are priceless and family it truly everything. Every year I feel a bit empty in the Christmas season like this because I lost my parents pretty early. I have not returned home for 9 years because nothing seems to worth it.

Live in happiness sir.

I think my dad used to often have a bottle.

Next thing you know your boy will switch from vodka to whiskey. Somehow we inherit our parents' traits.

I do enjoy the custom traditions and have seen many young people participating throughout the country. So I bet there is hope for the local morris dancers where you are too 🙂

I think with young people the getting drunk can take priority over quality, but he's fairly sensible.

I have a friend who is a morris dancer and he says recruitment is an issue. Folk music is still popular, but the dancing may be more niche. Not every tradition can last forever, but at least they will be recorded these days.

Nice! I have never had any of the Glenfiddich offerings, but I would like to try them at some point. I have also had my eye on a bottle of Maccallen for quite some time, but I have never brought myself to pay the $70 USD for it. I hear it is fantastic though.

I'm not sure how much I'd pay for a bottle. Maybe I can use some $HIVE to treat myself eventually :)

That is a very nice bottle of scotch! I've tried the 12 year, and it's also pretty fantastic. I tend to do more bourbon or rye over scotch, myself.

The young man did well. Whisky and chocolate always a winner 👌
