When will we get to 10k minnows?

avatar

The @tenkminnows account was created in March 2019. Back then we had around 9200 minnows and it looked like we could get to 10k with a bit of a push. The account was set up to vote on small accounts who were doing good posts to give them a boost. Many have graduated, but I think some have powered down since then. I have not kept a log of everyone who got that support.

Numbers went up and then down a bit, so that around the time of the Hive fork we had around 9340; not a massive increase. After the fork some people powered down and left. Even with lots more people joining Hive the trend in minnows has been downward, so we are under 8500.

Stats Now
Chart from @arcange

I actually looked back to the start of the year to see what had changed since then and that chart is below. Since then we have over 900,000 more accounts! Most of those are from @splinterlands, but we know most will never blog or socialise. We do have over 600 more active minnows and 66,000 more active redfish though. Numbers of dolphins and orcas are down, but we gained a few whales.

Start of 2021
From this post.

Over this year the whales have increased their share of Hive Power, but a lot is delegated out. I assume a lot goes to curation projects. We do need a better distribution of stake to spread the vote. This is why most of my votes go to smaller accounts, especially if they have low rewards on good posts. The big, popular accounts will earn whatever I do, so they do not need my votes and I would not expect to get anything much back from them if I did vote for them. I know some of them are more discerning in their curation, so fishing for whales can be futile. Create good posts and be a good Hiver if you want support.

I see some people who concentrate almost entirely on getting votes from curation bots and also the Tribe rewards. That limits what you can make. Being social and building a following of actual people who like what you do is likely to earn better in the long run.

I will keep reviewing who @tenkminnows supports and am open to suggestions for candidates. They need to have some history of posting and commenting to be considered. Those who post frequently, but hardly comment are unlikely to make the cut. I think being social is a crucial part of this platform, especially if you are trying to establish yourself. Be interesting and add value.

2021 is nearly over and so I do not expect massive changes, but I am hoping 2022 will bring new developments that will help use build something world-changing. Every one of us can be part of making that happen.

Hive five!

Interesting graph and data… so there are only 1630 dolphins in the world? did I read the data correctly?

That's right, but the number of minnows is ridiculously low really.

it seems that the success of HIVE comes from Splinterlands and not from the platform itself.

maybe we need better APR for keeping Hive powered up, it has certainly increased HBD's value after it's increase in APR to 10%

This.

But, I guess people just like their APR via clicking when it makes so much more sense to make staking the main focus.

You have the option of totally passive income, but I like rewarding others. Of course some will vote for their own accounts to win both ways.

Maybe for some people, but just earning a fixed APR is a bit boring. With HP I can help other people. It's not too hard to earn 10% from curation plus 3%.

no no no, I mean higher APR plus curation, not suggesting any numbers here I'll leave that part to smarter people

There has to be some balance or inflation will get out of control.

Does this entirely depend on the amount of HP an account has or it includes the value of everything an account has?

It's purely based on the HP you own, excluding delegations to you.

When the price of HIVE surpasses $10, most people will sell their HIVE, and the number of small accounts will increase.

Why $10? Some may sell. I think a lot will sell some now and then, but will want to keep earning.

I recently became a dolphin but I don't understand how the ranking system works. Is it solely based on the amount of HP an account has?

Hopefully 2022 brings in some new users. I'm trying to get a buddy of mine on here. That will be one more to the list if he does join 😆

It is based on the HP you own, but in terms of VESTS. On Hivebuzz I can see you just passed the level of 10million to become a dolphin. Any new users are welcome if they want to be productive.

Okay. I see... Sort of.
To be honest, I never understood the concept of vests and how they are different and separate from HP. You don't have to explain it to me. Unless you want to. I'm curious but I won't bother you with teaching me the basics that I should know of a platform I've been using for 4 years 😂🙃

I don't totally understand it either :)

I am glad that I can still do my part to help out with my delegation. Did I ever suggest my worker as a candidate? He has a delegation from me already, but he is still growing.

I finally got around to adding you as one of my FAVORITE CURATORS on peakd, I really appreciate all the music you find, and your support of the minnows is admirable. So now when I have a few extra votes at the end of the day, I have more more place to find good stuff to vote.

I decreased the minnow count by one this year as I moved into the Dolphin level, and have had a nice growth year this year. With increased growth, there is increased vote ability on more post.

Losing minnows to gain dolphins is not a problem :) I just think the increase in minnows ought to more than cancel that out, but we may have to give them a leg-up. Let's try to get all the ranks increasing next year.

I just realized that I am a minnow! I must work hard to become a dolphin now. I have been absent for a while, but, I am back, and here to stay. I will try to help make more minnows as well.

Good post, could you please tell me whet are the HP requirements for each level? I cannot see that from the graph, I don't know if I'm blind, or It's not there 😅

The levels are based on 'VESTS' which are the internal representation of our stake. A million of those is minnow and it goes up 10x for each level. You can see it on Hivebuzz.

So you are a third of the way to minnow, which equates to about 538 HP. That goes up based on the inflation rate. I hope that makes it clear.

Thank you! Not everything clear yet, but I will research more, :) thank you for pointing right direction!

Thanks for the insights. I'm still swimming with the small fish but I'm taking this advice on board. I've been interacting more and more on Hive recently, it's a remarkable ecosystem. The great thing is that the more I interact, the more inspiration I receive. Here's to a great 2022.

The feedback loop does work. Some people don't get it though. They will lose out.

Just a tiddler here. I have some things from this post, and also from reading the replies to questions in the comments, too. So, thanks to people for asking what I was just about to, and to you for answering! Getting it straight in my head, albeit very slowly.

Hive is different from anything else and it can be hard to understand. Feel free to ask questions.

After hitting the three month mark on Hive just yesterday, Steve, I took some time to review what I'd learned and what I want to focus on over the next three months here.

I found myself, in that process, looking up HiveBuzz to better understand these levels and realised I am a red fish (no surprises) and Brad (@new.things) my partner is a minnow (maybe because he put in a bigger chunk of cash to start?). We're both happily learning and trying to improve incrementally every day in a way that is authentically us (rather than ticking boxes we think we should).

In my review of my first three months I mentioned that I was actively following and trying to model off people with a high reputation number.

My argument for doing so was that those of you who have a number above 70 must have being doing enough of the right things for long enough to have some idea of what the heck you're doing and thus be reasonable role models for me (rather than me trying to guess or wander around in the dark).

It was pointed out to me that I really need to pay attention to those people with higher numbers who also are operating in a way that matches my beliefs, values, etc. Since I'm always looking for people who behave with integrity in all parts of my life, that's my go-to anyway. But it occurred to me that there are people like yourself who are actively creating on-point content that really could help me to better understand how to be a good Hivian. And that actively following you more closely might be a better idea than rolling around in some of the posts where I sometimes find myself wondering, "Why the hell I'm reading this rubbish?" 😆

All that to say... thank you for this post and for sharing posts that--as a newer Hivian--I can actually (mostly) understand. Expect to see me following along and seeing what else I can learn from you. I actively welcome your feedback on any post you see from me where I could be "behaving" better (be gentle please!) as I see Hive as a long term space for me to grow and expand and contribute. Thus, I care about doing it well.

Finally, if you can make suggestions for anyone else I can follow who you hold in high regard, I'll happily hear their names. I feel like you'd only recommend awesome people who are committed to seeing Hive, and all in it, thrive. I enjoy consuming content related to: fitness and health, self improvement/personal development, spiritual awareness/consciousness/philosophy, relationships/being human. And I'm sure other things that escape me right now 😅 Oh, and possibly really easy to understand Hive & crypto teachings.

Thanks for reading this comment that seems to have turned into a mini essay 🤣 Here's to my moving towards minnow status!

From what I can see you are doing the right sorts of things on Hive. You are getting involved with communities and commenting. I was an active commenter from the start and that's how I built a following. You have to find people who share your interests to keep it interesting. Some just chase the money, but that can be a lot of work for little reward. It has to be fun for me.

I have done the #FollowFriday posts for years and I would encourage others to do similar things. We need ways to help people connect. We do have a lot of runners here and that is something to build on.

These are still early days really as Hive has massive growth potential. You are one of the pioneers.

Thanks for the kind words (& pizza!) Steve. I'll have to see if I can understand what you're up to with FollowFridays. I noticed the mention there, thank you! I get the same sense; early days, much room for growth. My intuition says: This is just the beginning.
