Follow Friday: Poll Dancing

The News

How is it Friday already? It sneaks up on me, but I am ready to do another #FollowFriday post. I would love to see some by other people, so tag me if you do one.

I have produced my usual prices chart. Nothing too dramatic this week, but $HIVE has recovered a little. As usual it seem $BTC is driving things.

Prices

The 'Battle of the Blockchains' Twitter poll was a bit of a farce. Proton suddenly got a couple of thousand votes to take the lead, so someone probably paid for that. At least we made it to the final and maybe a few more people heard about Hive.

I did my own little poll as an experiment. I doubt anyone was going to bother cheating on it. I deliberately did not mention it on Hive as I wanted to get the opinions of people who would see it on Twitter. It would be interesting to know who voted on the other options. There may be a few people who might want to be on Hive.

Splinterfest is happening in Las Vegas this weekend. I would hope that lots of people who are going will post about it on Hive. Do people use Splintertalk. I am fine with people using dedicated front ends as long as they are being social. Players can be earning from that too.

Friday Follows

  • I just found @slothlydoesit who is up in Scotland posting about all sorts of things.
  • I know @andrewmusic is a guitarist, but he just bought a drum kit and is getting into that. We need more drummers on Hive. There is an existing community for that, but the founder has disappeared. Maybe I should create a new one.
  • @epodcaster started the NaPodPoMo podcasting challenge fifteen years ago. I did it last year and it was fun. Maybe it will spur me into starting recording again. She is very active on Twitter with lots of promotion of Hive, including live 'Spaces'.
  • I met the @liketu founder @elmerlin at Hivefest. He just posted a nice video his team made there. I pop up in it a couple of times.

The Doghouse

There was yet another case of someone blatantly copying posts this week. I do not think there is any excuse for this. You cannot expect to earn from such dishonestly and the community were quick to deal with it. This is distributed curation that means we do not need central control on Hive. People are prepared to put in the effort to track down abuse even when they get little reward for it.

The End

We are rapidly running out of year. Are you likely to achieve any goals you set? Will 2023 be the Year Of Hive? What could we be doing to make that happen? So many questions!

Hive five!

I didn't even know there were polls going on. I haven't even bother to fill out my absentee ballot for the mid term election this year. My wife and I will likely get around to that this weekend. I hope 2023 is a good year for Hive. We need some long term hype. Posts and interactions have been pretty stagnant the last couple of months.

Having events like Hivefest and Splinterfest is good, but will they get mainstream coverage? There are some efforts around marketing happening.

We need to mobilise people when there are relevant polls going on. The active Hive community is pretty engaged, but it's small. That needs a boost.

Do you think people really pay attention to polls like that? I can't think of a single time I was like ooh, I need to check out this random token because I saw it on a poll. Have you? I do agree that we need some kind of boost from something. Maybe I am totally wrong, maybe it will be a poll.

Well it costs practically nothing, so why not give it a try? Hive people left lots of comments on the poll, but there were a lot less from Proton fans. Our community is inherently social, so that can make a difference. I am not a marketing person, but I expect all sorts of stuff gets promoted via Twitter.

Yeah, I am not really into marketing either. I don't know what people these days are looking for.

So let me get this right, the vast majority of your followers on Twitter are Hive users, and 85% said they use Hiveblocks. It's a bit like me asking my followers if they use Linux, isn't it? 🤷‍♂️

TBH, I don't know Luke Willis, but I suspect the Proton community knows him. Given most of us follow "Like-minded" people or, at the very least, people who have an interest in some of the things we are interested in, these sorts of polls are worthless; it's the same thing I've banged on about for years with events such as OggCamp or HiveFest for that matter. They're jolly fun things to go to, but they don't promote anything or encourage uptake because the speakers at these events are preaching to people already converted. 🤷‍♂️

I'm not sure how many of my followers are active. I know a fair few use Hive, but then I took that into account when I created the poll. I was just interested to see how many might be interested in Hive. Jeez, I'm not even allowed to do a little experiment.

Wills has less followers than me and he's actually into Koinos, which Hive knocked out in a previous round. With these polls it tends to be a matter of communities noticing and spreading the word. It's not exactly scientific or a reliable indicator.

The community events still have value as you well know. They are not primarily to get more people into the 'product', but that can be a side-effect if they get publicity. Some people working at the venues may take an interest for instance. From where Hive is now even a few hundred more active users would make a difference.

The Doghouse

Good to see name and shame!!!

and as I have free time on my hands any suggestions as to how I can 'sign-up" to weed out these burglars of intellectual property?
cheers

Stuff gets discussed on this Discord. You could follow a downvote trail, but I am wary of doing that as I like to have control. I try not to get vindictive, but some rewards are just no earned. Hivewatchers deal with a lot of stuff anyway.

I actually voted on that poll and well, it is what it is 🤷 like you said, I'm sure new people heard about hive regardless of the outcome.

I’m going to do a follow Friday next week or schedule it at least. We are going to be having a company party that day at Londons Crystal Maze. I agree drummers are a minority here, there must be more. 2023 is going to be exciting as I’m planning to up my investments and take part in some PUMs by powering up 1HIVE or more each day to boost my HP as much as I can. I’ll draw up a chart to work out a target.

I try to keep these up, but sometimes I'm just not near the PC and it's harder to do big posts on my phone. Have fun at your party and good luck with the powering up. Targets are good if they inspire you.

I try to make my titles fun. There are lots of musicians on Hive and the interaction can be fun.

Brian was my little project. I think he raises a few smiles.

proofofbrian (makes you look twice :) seems useful and might be a help to those who tend to misspell tags. Never heard of it until now.

It was my attempt at writing a bot, and it wasn't too hard. It's told over 450 people of their mistake, but it only does it once per account to avoid spamming.

I believe that Hive and Bitcoin has no where to go but up. I do not know the timetable but I believe it is inevitable we be persistent and patient in our positions.

Just after I posted $HIVE went up, but I'm not taking the credit for that :)

I've been pondering my NaPodPoMo podcast topic this year. There are several directions I could go. I could revisit last year's Social Media and the Blockchain. I've learned so much since last year's show. But I also have other ideas I've been wanting to pursue. National Podcast Post Month is always a great opportunity to try something new. So perhaps I shall. x
