Doctor Strange through the years

avatar

I have said plenty of times that I have missed a lot of comic history as I was not into things like Marvel as a kid. I was reading things like the Beano, but later there was Action and 2000 A.D. that had the British take on violence and superheroes. So I am still catching up on some of the US comics.

Cover

I picked up this Doctor Strange compendium in a charity shop. It was practically new and half the original price. I also have a equivalent for Captain America. The books have some background detail on the characters and some stories from different periods. They give you enough of the story to follow what was happening and get some sort of conclusion.

1954

The stories mostly feature Strange's nemesis Baron Mordo who was a fellow pupil of the Ancient One. They battle with their magic, but you know who will eventually triumph. That is one issue with serial comics, but then sometimes they do kill off a major character, only to bring them back later.

1972

By the 1970s the drawings are more detailed, but the stories are similar with various beings from other dimensions who Strange must protect the Earth from.

2004

This story from nearly 20 years ago features the Fantastic Four and a very different style.

2015

Coming more up to date and the style has changed again with Strange looking the worse for wear. This is from when Captain America has been revealed as a Hydra agent and New York is besieged by demons under the control of Mordo. The story features characters like Daredevil, Luke Cage and Kingpin who have features in some of the movies and TV shows. They need to work together to combat the forces of evil.

I did not enjoy this book as much as the Captain America one, but it gave me more insight into the characters. I have yet to see the latest Doctor Strange movie. I have not seen the last Spider Man either and Strange is in that too. I have just not been to the cinema much lately, so I will have to catch up via streaming. I am enjoying Ms Marvel that has a different feel with a mostly Muslim cast and covers the partition of India. There is just so much to watch and I cannot keep up.

Marvel crazy in my house :)

And superhero crazy in general in fact. We reckon Marvel has the best Superheroes and DC the best villains after much debate :)

Dr Strange is my favourite personally. Then Iron man for his sense of humour, And Spiderman for his humility and ethics (of course!)

Thanks for the peek into some really beautiful art.

My son has grown up with Marvel movies, but not sure he's read many of the comics. It's a massive industry now.

With the maiden name of Parker plus my dad and brother both called Peter, I've always been a Superman fan 😉.

I haven't started watching Ms. Marvel yet, but I watched the new Dr. Strange movie the other day. It was pretty good. I was able to understand what was going on without having seen the Spider Man movie. I don't know if that one will ever come to Disney + since I think that Sony owns it or something.

I may have to pay to watch Spider Man. It's on Google and not too expensive. There are so many streaming services and I'm not going to pay for all of them every month. Mind you it is possible to just have a month on some of them to catch up with stuff. There are various movies I want to see. The problem is more about finding a good time to do it.

I thought the same thing about Disney +, but they keep on putting out really great stuff so I haven't gotten around to cancelling it yet!

I've watched marvel as a kid growing up, especially the cartoons. I also watched DC and hundreds of others toons. But I never read a marvel comic book. I've read a little of DC, though. All the history and insight to characters I usually get it from movies and some cartoons and it usually seem enough for me; doesn't it feel enough for you too? Do you sometimes feel like you show consume more and get some more depth from other works?

At the same time, though, I think reading all these comics would be great fun.

The comics have masses of back story. From what I've seen some of that is in the movies as a treat for the fans. There is just so much that it's hard to know where to start. I keep an eye out for second hand books and comics to get part of the experience. That said, I think the movies and TV shows stand up on their own.

I just found a bunch of my old comics from when I was a kid. I have to go through them. Maybe I'll do a post... I've been inspired :)

I haven't read comics in years, I'm completely out of the loop now. I do enjoy most of the movies though. Looking forward to the new Thor, I've heard mostly good things so far.

Anyway, awesome thrift/charity shop find! I love finding stuff like that. I'd have scooped that up the second I saw it too.

They battle with their magic, but you know who will eventually triumph. That is one issue with serial comics, but then sometimes they do kill off a major character, only to bring them back later.

This is definitely the biggest problem with never-ending serials. All the plots that can be plotted seem to have already been plotted (or something like that). It used to be said that "no one dies in comics except for Bucky and Uncle Ben" and, recently, even that has been tarnished.

That said, I used to enjoy Dr Strange back in the day when, if memory serves, he was rather like Sherlock Holmes but with magic. Really, a Dr Strange by gaslight would be really cool.

I wonder if people like Stan Lee imagined their characters would keep going for decades. It's not like a novel where things can just finish. They are under pressure to keep things going forever, but i think some comics do actually end. I quite like it when a TV show has an ending with no real intention of continuing the story. There's just too much temptation to keep milking it.

I guess the movie special effects can actually try to show what their magic can do now. I still need to watch the 2nd Dr Strange one, but the first had some freaky stuff.

true, comics are one long serial, but you can also see the same thing in novels (the German SF series Perry Rhodan has seen weekly publication since it started in 1961, and well over 3,000 issues, mainly novella length). Comic books are a great medium, though. I have been reading and collecting comic books for a long, long time, and my daughter is also collecting comics (with my money!) and enjoys reading them as much as I do.

@stevec - please keep posting about your comic book adventures.

missed this blog until now, somehow :/ Dr.Strange always seemed to be a character the Marvel could never fully commit to (in the comics). There was also a brief period were he worn a mask...kinda like that look

Not seen that version. Would have been a shame to cover up the pretty Cumberbatch in the movies :) All those squiggles on the cloak must have been a pain to draw.

Doctor Strange has always been, and still is, one of my favorite comic book series. When I started subscribing to Marvel Unlimited, I read through his first appearance in Strange Tales #110, through to #168, when the series changed names to Doctor Strange, while Nick Fury Agent of Shield (another favorite) split off into a separate series of his own. I have, over the years, read a lot of Doctor Strange. For the most part, I prefer the older, pre-2000 era comics than a lot of what is being written today as Doctor Strange has taken some , ahem, strange twists and turns in the form of plot devices that I found unappealing. But the art is far superior to that which we had in the Silver Age comics, as the technology to produce finished books is far different today than 60 years ago.

Very nice write up, sorry I didn't run across it sooner as I have been travelling the past couple of weeks and have been offline.
