Checking on the state of Hive

avatar

I have not done one of these in a while, but I do keep monitoring various statistics about the Hive platform.

Minnows

The @tenkminnows project I maintain is intended to boost more accounts to minnow status. Numbers fell after the Great Fork, but there has been a recent improvement. Lots of new accounts are created all the time, but many struggle to get anywhere. Those of us with significant HP should support those whose posts we enjoy. I and many others do okay, so consider redirecting your auto votes where they make more of a difference.

SEO

I have always thought the Hive name was too generic. You have to narrow down your searches to get past results for heating controllers and some other blockchains. At least Presearch is coming up with something. How can we improve on this? I expect having multiple front ends does not really help matters. If you go to LeoFinance it may not even be obvious it runs on Hive.

Presearch

Web stats

I should think the only way to get accurate web stats is if you have the server logs, but I look at what Alexa offers via Hypestat. Unfortunately this data may not be available for much longer.

Hypestat

peakd is the most popular of the social dapps. Ecency web stats will not show the full picture as many people will use the mobile app. It seems India is a major source of viewers right now. That is a massive potential market.

Dapps

DappRadar is a bit variable on reflecting actual users. Numbers for Splinterlands and the main sites seem realistic, but for others such as @risingstargame and 3speak it hardly shows any when we know those are well used. The big three social dapps add up to far more than St--mit gets.

DappRadar

Previously I have looked at @stateofthedapps, but that does not seem to be getting any Hive data lately. Perhaps some developers need to work with them on that.

The markets

Of course I keep an eye on crypto prices on Coingecko. It will be interesting to see if the 20% HBD interest will drive more trading volume.

Other coverage

Due to the name it can be hard to find coverage of Hive in the media. I had a Google feed for mentions of 'the other blockchain', but that is not so viable for Hive.

I did see mention of this list of social sites on Sourceforge. That used to be a major place to find software, but may be less used now. You can review sites there and Hive could do with more positive reviews. It looks like some disgruntled ex-users are putting it down.

Are there other places you look to see how Hive is doing? We have @arcange and @penguinpablo doing daily posts with various charts. It would be good to see Hive covered in places that people outside the community will see.

Hive five!

Thanks for this data… Splinterlands remains HIVE's most popular application, I hope the gap with PeakD will sooner or later narrow

We need some of the players to get social, but it may not be obvious to them that they have that as an option.

I came to PeakD ONLY because members of my Splinterlands discord told me about it - the word of mouth is there, but only if you choose to join a guild and become connected.

Guilds are the only social part of the Splinterlands site, but how much mention of Hive is there otherwise? Players could earn by posting about the game.

Absolutely - and that's the draw card - but, it's not widely mentioned, or a wide practice within the guilds to promote the earning potential of the social space.

It takes time to figure things out, and I was perhaps lucky to stumble from the game into bloggging in January - when I was on 4 weeks holiday. Gave me time to explore and get to understand it a bit before work started again.

I've been here 3 1/2 months now - and just about to hit 1000 HIVE powered up. It's taken a lot of trial and error and finding spaces etc to get to that point and I'm hopeful now of being on my road to a Dolphin. Reckon that's about 12 months away still - a long time frame! - but also - a lot of commitment to powering up.

Anyways Steve, good chat. I'm off to get ready and get my day underway. Have a good one. Tim

Maybe one day we will see those numbers up where we know they should be. I guess until then we will just keep moving forward the way we have. I think it is going to take a concerted effort for Hive to really gain some notoriety. More than one individual will likely be able to accomplish.

Yes, but each of us can do something. I know each extra user can require a lot of hand-holding. I have brought in several friends recently.

None of my friends are interested. :) Too much work. I dunno :P

Do you know other people already into crypto? My musician friends were not, but they do seem to manage okay.

No, not really. I don't honestly have a ton of close friends. Hard to believe I know...

Are all your friends online? Actually most of my close friends are from the musician crowd. It's a good thing I started that really.

The couple I have in real life, yes, they have social media accounts.

Morning Steve;
I do love a good chart - and the numbers etc. You've mentioned India as a potential market; but in my travels around this online space - I'm seeing a lot of people from Nigeria. Just wondering, are there stats available for unique visitors broken down to each country?

Nigeria comes third on Hiveblog, but doesn't rank for peakd. It's a big country and I know Hive is popular there.

Golly; interesting ranks there. I'm from Australia - met a few countrymen on here, but not a lot. Was surprised to see we're up there - not sure where they all are ;)

It's going to depend on what data Alexa capture and I think that relies on people running their browser extension. They are shutting that down soon and then it will be more guesswork.

I always wondered on the effect of the many front ends on SEO. The name is a bit grim for it as especially here it is all about the Hive Thermostats/smart devices malarkey. It is good to see that we are on an even keel of sorts at least

I keep saying that we need better branding. Have to explain to people that they access Hive via peakd, but some of the front ends barely mention Hive. The various teams need to coordinate to some extent.

An over arching group of some sort would be the best bet for that kind of thing. Even if there was a vision of sorts for all to adhere to. That the problem with decentralisation, the individualism

We would definitely use some more projects of Splinterlands' caliber; technically speaking, they were the first to make it possible to get into Hive (even if indirectly) using your debit/credit card.

It's too bad there are still people out there with an exe to grind, badmouthing Hive even after all this time has passed. But I guess everyone needs a "hobby..."

I hope there can be easier ways to buy into Hive. The crypto/fiat bridge can be a tricky one to cross. We need more exchanges to support HIVE directly.

It can be a delicate balance in dealing with people who abuse the system without making enemies. Some you can guide to a better path, but others will storm off noisily. Some really bear a grudge.

Splinterland is still in first position and it will take a lot of time to push it away from there

very well written, and it is always nice to see the data in tangible amounts as it gives yuo a clear picture to what is needed in the future

HIVE SEO is pretty bad. I tried finding a long post I created, which was SEO optimised to the best of my ability, but it wasn't even indexed by Google, sadly. I got a few hits on Waiv.io, Gift and some other forks of the project, but not Hive. Pretty strange.

I also have problems when I search for HIVE related stuff and then stumble on other completely random things. We praise ourselves with endurance as a community so I think maybe that will play a huge role of our brand/s in the future, as others may perish.

For Hive, I'm primarily a web user. Not much for the mobile apps. I have them loaded on my phone, I'm just more likely to post and engage on a computer. Totally a personal preference on my part. For Web2 social, I am more likely to consume and post content via mobile. Not sure why these two behaviors are opposite of one another.
