A FRIEND WANTS TO COMMIT SUICIDE - HOW CAN I HELP?

image.png

Although this is not the post I planned to write about, this is the situation on the ground at the moment. I was told urgently by a friend of mine that our friend seems to be suicidal and that I should check up on him before anything happens. It was really difficult to do this because, at this point, I was having my IT presentation. Regardless, I made sure to message my friend.

When we started discussing, I got to know what happened to my friend Mimi that made him suicidal. At first, when I was told that he was planning on committing suicide, I found it so difficult to believe because the Mimi I know is a strong person, a musician, and a comedian. He was one of my best friends at a time in my life and is still a very valuable friend of mine.

Mimi is also a very intelligent person and one of the friendliest people I have ever met. He graduated with a distinction in our polytechnic and is one of the best students in the department, and do you know what I find most surprising is hearing that the same guy got seven carryovers at the new school where he went to continue his HND?

According to his story, he was told to withdraw, but his departmental supervisor said that his result could be corrected if he paid a certain amount of money, and everything would be better. At haste, he went to use the money of his brother that was in his account to solve the issues with his carryover and later found he was scammed by the school, and now they do not allow him to complete his final project because they brought up the seven carryovers.

His whole family has rejected him because of this; the money he used was his brother's money without his permission, and the brother needs his money back. Nobody wants to listen to him, putting all the blame on him. He says he is frustrated and only thinks of ending it all.

I am still yet to totally understand his full story, and I have not fully comprehended it yet but since he is not here on Hive, I will share a screenshot of our chat here. Hopefully, you will understand what is going on.

Since I am yet to understand his story fully, I hope to make a video call with him tomorrow to confirm his identity. Although there have some voice note explanations he has sent to me, that shows that it is his Mimi's voice. but at this era of AI where there are things like Deep fakes where people can create a voice and face identify that looks exactly like the original.

I trust my friend "Mimi" but it is difficult for me to believe my friend got seven carryovers knowing how intelligent he is.

Please make him realize that he'll hurt his family even more if he takes such a step, honestly nothing is new under the sun, yes! the deed has been done and they found out about the money (which to me was inevitable, cos even if the current issue didn't come up, he would still have to replace the money he used in the first place), however suicide is never an option, would killing himself help pay the money he owes? Would it help save face with his family?? No!.

He just needs to realize that it has happened already, the next thing is to think about a solution, his family might be angry at him now,but it's just in the heat of the moment, i'm sure with their anger they won't want to see him dead, suicide does more harm than good, it should never be an option.

Bro thank you... I have contacted him to let him know all this. Hopefully, his family would not be angry with him soon and everything gets better.

I can’t even imagine what he must be going through right now. He actually really messed up because he had broken his brother’s trust and I am sure your friend will be very sad by that. At the end of the day, suicide is never an option. I hope he gets past this problem for real. Please, just keep talking it out of him.

Yeah, he messed up oh. His brother would still have to find a way to forgive him. Blood is thicker than water you know.

firstly, make the video call to confirm if it's and how he is. He needs all the help he could right now especially with the company money. There's more to this story, what happened to his record since first year and why is it missing now? The scammed HOD should be sued. I know it's hard but suicide is never the solution. Only him can fix this.

Seriously there are a lot of questions to be answered. However, suing the school or HOD would be difficult without funds or support. Presently working on how he can get to take care of himself without his family's support and see the next step of action to take.

I can only imagine the situation he must be right now and how he sees the world. I wish him all the very best.

I just feel this friend was trying to sort his way through school. Federal University is very different from Poly. Sorting carryovers can be very dangerous if the lecturer does not have the upper hand in that department. Money can't solve everything without good connections.

Suicide is never an option, let him know that he can start over again. He will become what God wants him to be, these are all lessons for him to learn from.

Good point. I have plans for him to enrol for an online school. I would try to help support him with any funds he may need to begin the school. But when we get to that river, we will know how to cross it.

Just keep texting him
Suicidal is a brave and bad action. It takes a lot for you to claim your life
Just try to call him and tell him to calmly figure things out…

Hmmm!! The issue of suicide is becoming something else these days, last year, a lady in my place committed suicide around November. According to her friends, it was because of family issues. I felt sorry for her but then, how does taking her own life now solve the problem on ground? Suicide is never a solution, it's a huge trap on its own.

Your friends story is pathetic, I feel sorry for him, but suicide won't solve it. If I were him, I am dropping out of school but I am sueing that HOD if I have evidence but if I don't, I will just let everything go, return home and apologize to my parents. No matter how angry they might be, they will surely cool off. Now is not the time to start thinking about suicide, that's a set up, he should just calm down.

With the way you described the guy earlier on, I am still finding it had to believe that he had 7 COs, like how? A best graduating student getting low CGPA, Omo, it's complicated. Well, I will advise you do that video call too, you know there are so many hustlers in Nigeria now, it could be one of them, so, verify first before you start thinking of sending any help. I don't know the distance between the two of you, if not, I would have suggested you visited him instead.

Bro, the same way you feel surprised with the 7 CO, I was surprised too. He was saying how possible he would have that much CO.

We did a call, spoke and confirmed that it was my friend speaking. I have spoken to him and closed the matter of committing suicide. Trying to plan the next step of action to take with him.

Hmm!! It is well, thank you for being there for him, you are such a good friend. May God see you through as you plan to take the next step with him.

Please do call him. But the story is looking kind of weird but why would someone have 7 carryovers? He could pause schooling and work; if work is disturbing his studies or what reasons. And besides paying money back door is extremely dangerous. Whatever he is going through I hope he can understand that many people have gone through worse than this and suicide isn't the solution.

I have called him and he is fine and not thinking of suicide again. He is not working or studying. He said he was surprised as well and didn't know how he could get 7 carryover. The problem is that he didn't talk to anybody about it and wanted to resolve the matter which ended up escalating even more.

One thing that can mess someone up real quick is when they are in trouble and their family member who they have their last hope on isn’t listening to them 😖😖

I see why he thought of suicide

And one thing about the educational system in Nigeria is that it is fucked up. So many loophole and yet it’s a death hole. I wish his people will listen to him and try to get him back on his feet

Bro, you are totally right. This can happen to someone when they are totally family-dependent. And the people they need the most turn out not to understand and be there for them at that crucial moment.
