El viejo glamour del servicio postal / The old glamour of the postal service

Hace tiempo fui a la sede principal de Ipostel (Instituto Postal Telegráfico de Venezuela) a retirar un paquete que me había llegado del exterior. Mi hermana tiene un casillero allí donde podemos recibir cosas y yo había comprado una mochila a través de una página web asiática, y me llegó el aviso de que ya estaba acá.

Some time ago I went to the main office of Ipostel (Venezuela's postal telegraphic institute) to pick up a package that had arrived from abroad. My sister has a locker there where we can receive things and I had bought a backpack through an Asian website, and I got the notice that it was already here.

Este centro postal queda en Caracas, en el sector San Martín y es una edificación muy grande. Fui temprano en la mañana y al ingresar me encontré con una bellísima moto antigua exhibida en el área de recepción.

This postal center is located in Caracas, in the San Martin sector and it's a very large building. I went early in the morning and when I entered I found a beautiful antique motorcycle exhibited in the reception area.

Soy fan de los vehículos antiguos, me parece que tienen más personalidad que los de hoy en día, así que aproveché para hacerle un par de fotos y leer la información del cartel que estaba a su lado, la cual no era mucha, decía que esta era una de las motos que la institución usaba en el siglo pasado para repartir la correspondencia por la ciudad.

I'm a fan of old vehicles, I think they have more personality than today's ones, so I took the opportunity to take a couple of pictures and read the information on the sign next to it, which was not much, it said that this was one of the motorcycles that the institution used in the last century to deliver mail around the city.

Lamentablemente no me fijé en la marca de la moto, pero buscando un poco en Internet ese diseño es de mediados del siglo XX, entre los años 1950 - 1960, encontré un modelo de la Harley-Davidson muy parecido a este y es de esa época.

Unfortunately I didn't look at the brand of the bike, but looking a little on the Internet that design is from the mid-twentieth century, between 1950 - 1960, I found a model of the Harley-Davidson very similar to this and is from that era.

Me dijeron que actualmente esta moto se encuentra exhibida en el edificio del viejo Correo de Carmelitas, ubicado en el centro de Caracas, el cual es un museo. Por cierto, su imagen también ha sido utilizada para ilustrar estampillas postales.

I was told that this motorcycle is currently on display in the building of the old Carmelitas Post Office, located in downtown Caracas, which is a museum. By the way, its image has also been used to illustrate postage stamps.

Hoy en día la figura del cartero ya no es algo común, pero por más tecnología que exista y las personas ya no envíen cartas y se comuniquen mediante los teléfonos celulares y el correo electrónico, el servicio postal tradicional no dejará de existir porque siempre se necesitará enviar cosas. Por eso, las empresas postales estatales como Ipostel han evolucionado y se enfocan en la actualidad en mover paquetería y competir con los servicios privados que existen, eso sí, en la actualidad lo hacen con camiones y no con las glamourosas motocicletas de antes...

Today the letter carrier is no longer a commonplace figure, but no matter how much technology there is and how much people no longer send letters and communicate through cell phones and email, the traditional postal service will not cease to exist because there will always be a need to send things. That's why state postal companies such as Ipostel have evolved and are currently focused on moving parcels and competing with the private services that exist, although they now do it with trucks and not with the glamorous motorcycles of the past...
