Tales of the Urban Explorer: Wellington Rooms

The word on the street told me, "Wellington Rooms is open; you have to do the Wellington Rooms." @anidiotexplores had been inside already; he had been lucky.

21_IMG_9238_21.jpg

Me?.. this place was bloody cursed. Three times I had tried and it had always been sealed. The back door that was supposed to be open now had three locks on it, and not those rusty types ether. Someone was resealing this one regularly.

22_IMG_9240_22.jpg

Built in 1815, I have seen older buildings but the décor you have to admit is quite grand. It reminded me of a small castle, and I half expected some guards to poke their heads up and aim a shot with an old musket.

’when the high society and aristocrats of Liverpool used to frequent Wellington Rooms, well you can see the date, it was long ago’… - Source

Wellington Rooms has its own Wikipedia page and used to host balls for the city's high society, before becoming an Irish bar.

There's no shortage of Irish people in Liverpool, you just catch the ferry, fall asleep for six hours and you're in England. Since 1997 it’s been doing nothing, besides growing more weeds around its exterior.

23_IMG_9241_23.jpg
'the aforementioned back door; predictably locked and likely to stay that way until someone turns up with a crowbar'

This time we had some luck as the front left side metal sheeting had been ripped away. Getting through it was fucking awkward and I had to endure the disbelieving stares of several pedestrians who thought me quite insane.

Wellington Rooms are relatively central and in a busy area. Luck was upon us and no pigs drove past during the brief struggle. That could have been awkward.

18_IMG_9235_18.jpg

I felt some relief while walking through the murky cellar; that tin sheeting hadn’t half made a din and I like to be as quiet as possible.

19_IMG_9236_19.jpg

The beer-pumping equipment was still attached, but I was intent on climbing upward. This corridor had to end somewhere.

1_IMG_9217_1.jpg

2_IMG_9218_2.jpg

It looked like I didn't need the big light up here; plenty of windows and holes in the roof were letting the natural stuff through.

3_IMG_9219_3.jpg

Mosaic tiles on the ceiling, with the bar name, lettered. It's unusual.

4_IMG_9220_4.jpg

Yes, it was a bar and an Irish one at that. I have seen better and much worse. This one had no beer, even of the stale type on offer.

5_IMG_9221_5.jpg

Such opulent wall décor! I can imagine the high society male aristocrats prowling this room looking for their next potential shag, all above board of course and done most properly.

6_IMG_9222_6.jpg

The stage would have yielded cheesy acts of comedy or slapstick. It’s not in the best state but still very intact.

7_IMG_9223_7.jpg

What’s up there I wonder? My vertigo prevented me from climbing up and peeking in the ceiling. It was probably full of bird shit and little else.

8_IMG_9224_8.jpg

In the 'John F. Kennedy' bar, there was more than one.

9_IMG_9225_9.jpg

'Wellington Rooms' had been done over many times before I managed to acquire an audience. It was showing.

10_IMG_9226_10.jpg

Should we have jumped on the stuck lift, up and down to see what would happen? It might take us somewhere else, as well as a swift death.

11_IMG_9227_11.jpg

There was little reason to open this, I am English and therefore not eligible for the ‘help’ offered within.

12_IMG_9229_12.jpg

'Wellington Rooms' was colourful but somehow not the spectacle I was expecting. Yes, it was OK, and better than your regular derp but somehow I was feeling underwhelmed.

13_IMG_9230_13.jpg

Everything in here was about the Irish, a lovely set of people in my experience, though my late father hated them collectively. Why, because they were too lucky. Blame those Leprechauns.

14_IMG_9231_14.jpg

It's typical 19th-century décor and I don't mean the sub-standard graffiti.

15_IMG_9232_15.jpg

How they attached this stuff to the walls, I can't tell you. It always strikes me as quite regal whenever I see this style. It's becoming less commonplace these days outside of stately homes.

16_IMG_9233_16.jpg

Lovely chandeliers and not the cheap pound shop variety. They likely survived as they were too high to swing on. This is what some 'explorers' like doing.

17_IMG_9234_17.jpg

You can see that Liverpool lacks any artistic talent, at least if this is an example. 'All You Need is Beer' could well be a reference to a certain Beatles song.

I emerged from the tin sheeting once again making lots of noise and garnering as many stares as when we entered.

20_IMG_9237_20.jpg

It was another mark on the bedpost, with a flavour of slight disappointment.

I love seeing the mix of old grandeur and urban decay in your pics! It makes me think of those old castles you see in movies but with that eerie, abandoned vibe.

It does have an impressive exterior and looks very old style compared to whats around it now. As usual I felt nothing inside, no vibes or cold places. That's just me.

Wow, that is a really cool building. I wouldn't have expected the inside to look like that. Is it just because all the windows are boarded up or are most pubs in England so dark and dingy? I meant that last bit with the chandeliers is pretty bright, but most of the other stuff is just very dark.

A lot of the old pubs have closed down to be replaced by restaurants that double up as them. There's some left, but less every day and they do tend to be dark places. Having no windows doesn't help things and accentuates that.

We still have some dive bars too that are pretty dark. I guess it is a worldwide thing!

It would be lovely if that building could be restored, it has the potential to be really beautiful. But I guess the reality is that whoever owns it is waiting for it to decay enough to be condemned so they can replace it with poorly-built overpriced "luxury apartments".

Right now, from what I hear... nothing is being done to it. Quite typical!

Wow, the place is really impressive, and who cares about pedestrians watching? Well, unless they were some cops...

They did a good job adding those locks, but maybe soon it'll be necessary to replace the door. It's rusting, and it might not be too hard to find another way in.

LOL, yes the back door is looking a little ropey as well as rusty. If you are really skinny there's an extra small gap at the bottom 😀

so I could easily slip through that gap lol.

Dammit man each time you show one of these run-down palaces, all I can think of is fixing them up and polishing those turds!

This one does indeed look like a castle and I can only imagine what that would go for on this side of the pond even in that condition. The bars, the stage, the bones of that place just scream to be fixed and that keg pump system looks like it is not too far gone. Maybe we should team up and return it to glory and have our grand Cryptopub. How much Hive do you have again?

Do you think its slide from opulence was signaled by or caused by falling into the hands of the Irish?

Not enough HIVE yet.. sadly. It's an almost city centre location so prime location. Pubs are gone here now, there's too many and not enough business.

I think my expectations were a little high. Everyone was going on about it last year and when I finally got in, it good... but not breathtaking.

The inner part of this building isn’t really bad and may even be renovated for the same cause or even something entirely different. Thanks for sharing this adventure with us.

Oh WOW!!! What a beautiful building and crazy shame to see what's happened to it. I miss the old architecture days everything today is so blocky and has no personality to it anymore. Really enjoyed this one I love the older designed up buildings and history behind them.

Yes, lots of old features. I don't see many like this, they are usually battered by the time I get to see them!

What an amazing building, if it was still completely top notch it would certainly not be out of place in today's hospitality industry. Beautiful spaces and bars, what a shame that it is so dilapidated.

It does have a unique look, a castle without being one!

That was an interesting place. Maybe it's the sign of the times, but there are places that really looked high class, while there are others that look very cheap; like the design on top of the Kennedy bar and some rooms. But since there are interesting architecture and designs to see, I think this was actually great. Good thing you were able to enter this time.

Yeah, you take a long look from the outside and you think there's a curse here. But in terms of the stone of the building and the way it's built, it looks very grand. You found a door to get in again. You are courageous and resourceful in that way. Even though you are oblivious to the eyes that are looking at you and wondering what is going to happen. I can imagine you walking through that dark basement, stepping slowly and carefully, holding your feelings of courage and excitement with you. I liked my quick death sentence in the elevator the best. In that ostentatious décor, I suddenly imagined naked men and women showing themselves and standing in shape. The bar might have made a nice corner for undressing those who got drunk.
And let's admit that the decorations on the walls were well done.
It gives me great pleasure to read your stories and observations.

It's likely to be sealed up again now, I have seen no recent reports. It could well be off the exploring list, at least for now.

Man, I love a spot of urbexing. Bittersweet as I appreciate the decay - but it's also sad to see these beautiful buildings vandalised and disrespected. One of my old favourites was the Asylum in Denbigh, incredible architecture. My friend is a member of a group of professional cavers that explore old mines - I was thinking of joining them over the coming months. :)

Late in reading this, what an amazing place it must have been before being left to go to wrack and ruin.
