Wednesday Walk - Mississippi Hidden Treasures

Here are some scenes from major hiking around the Mississippi river for this #wednesdaywalk by @tattoodjay

Quite a few trails are around the edge of the Mississippi river on the border of Iowa and Wisconsin. Most of these trails lead up to various overlooks.

This is the driftless area where the ice age didn't completely flatten the Midwest. So you can get a bit of an elevation experience compared to most of the flat hiking areas in the rest of the state.

These hikes can be quite steep, great for working out the calf muscles.

There are even cool limestone rock formations higher up towards the top of these overlooks.

Here is a little cave that is high up in the rocks. You basically have to climb a ladder to get to it.

20210531_111411_copy.jpg
This is a view from inside the cave looking out. There is a tiny tunnel that goes far back but only kids can really crawl back there.

20210530_124136_copy.jpg
I bet if you did crawl all the way back in the cave you might encounter a rat snake.

Or a garter snake. This guy has blue eyes because he is about to shed his skin.

I'm sure a few of these orange slugs might be hiding deep in the cave as well. I got many other critter photos on my walks around the Mississippi river. I'll save the birds for #featheredfriday and a few mushrooms for #fungifriday that's all for this #wednesdaywalk :-)

He is a harmless snake, though if you catch them they tend to poop on you.

Their main predator is birds, maybe doing that will make the bird drop him.

Fortunately the only poisonous ones might be in the river itself, all the rest up on the hills aren't poisonous. It's been a cool year so far so I didn't even have to deal with mosquitos on these hikes. I am way more scared of those than snakes.

Thats good at least, and great about the mosquitos not many here yet either

I wonder if the deet might accumulate and cause cancer, I hate to use it but sometimes its necessary when there are clouds of mosquitos. The natural spray never works at all.

I am lucky and hope I am not tempting fate saying this but they seldom if ever bite me

My wife uses Deet also let’s hope it is safe

You have very beautiful places there. But there are snakes. I do not really like them and therefore I will not go for a walk there)))

Haha be sure not to go anywhere near Arizona, I grew up there and snakes are all over the place. Around here the snakes are hard to spot too many hiding places.

we also have many snakes in Israel, but they are more lucky here than your snakes: there are many places to hide. You're right, I won't go for a walk to Arizona ;)))

Ahh you have those cool desert horned vipers that hide in the sand similar to the sidewinder rattlesnakes of Arizona.

right, we have several kinds of horned snakes. and I am very happy that I saw them only in our zoo ;))) your snakes are also very beautiful. I have not seen similar snakes here

Once you know which ones are poisonous its easy to not be afraid of snakes. I even know how to deal with poisonous ones (rattle snakes and cotton mouths).

I only know, rattlesnakes, cobras.
They are very deadly.
But the others I don't know, are they poisonous.
Although not, like a python.
But he looks very scary, his body shape is very large, in our area there is even one as big as an adult's thigh.
That's very scary.

Yeah the pythons aren't poisonous but they are big enough to squeeze you to death. The only other poisonous one here is a copperhead. They look like a rattlesnake but have no rattle to warn you.

I love that ladder that leads to the cave, I would do well going upstairs... but downstairs... hm, we would need some hours to get me down 🤣
Never liked to go downstairs

The first photo of Mississippi river reminded me of Danube river...ok, just reminded as Mississippi is a bit larger :D but yeah, something like that feeling that get me to Danube 😇

Snakes... oops 😆

Yeah I climbed up and down those steps like a ladder vs a stairway. Reminded me of my teenage years as a painter lol. The Mississippi is really wide and slow moving with lots of islands in the middle, and lots of snake habitat lol.

Ok, I will keep watching it just through photos :p

Speaking of snakes here's a turtle that climbed up on one at a museum by the Mississippi. Snake didn't event flinch.

@sketch.and.jam !!!! Soon (ok, in some hours 🤣) I will go to sleep. If I have some snake nightmare, I will let you know tomorrow!

The only thing I get nightmares about are black widow spiders, usually they manifest as pits full of them and I have to avoid falling into the pits of them on treacherous tiny paths.

Arachnophobia on black widows :) what a detailed dream, omg!

Good morning @sketch.and.jam, all good, I haven't dreamed about snakes... neither spiders 👌

Yeah the spider dreams only happen if I have a fever. Normally I don't remember what I ended up dreaming about.

Great walk! I really like the view with the plucky pine tree, it has magnitude and grandeur to it.

That little guy was growing out of a rock, it was basically a bonsai. There were a few smaller ones around it as well.

Around the Mississippi river photos are really charming and seem to me one kind of adventure feelings.

Yeah it was a remote out in the wild adventure. Though you could hear the boats on the river to remind you of civilization.

It was perfect weather too, not quite hot enough to cause the uphill hiking to be a problem lol.

Oh yes, there was an opportunity to make sure of that.
Luckily you had the perfect time for hiking, which is rarely hit.😊
