Wednesday Walk - Hanging Out with the Snakes
Here's a walk by a swamp way south of me for this #wednesdaywalk by @tattoodjay
For father's day we decided to go farther south in to uncharted territory for our walk. It was a nice warm day and we found a good place to walk nearby a huge science campus known as the Argonne National Laboratory. As usual we noticed Canadian geese instantly near the swampy area.
But this time we got to see lots of snakes because its warmer down in this area as its farther south. I'm guessing this might be a yellowbelly water snake, unfortunately I couldn't get him to show his throat to me to confirm the species.
This one has some nice patterns. I'm guessing its a common watersnake.
Depending on their age the common watersnake coloring can be quite drastic. This one is medium size and had a nice copper color to it but as it gets older it will become more white underneath with more pronounced markings.
I'm sure the poor bullfrogs are constantly dodging the larger watersnakes. Perhaps a few larger bullfrogs eat the tiny watersnakes every now and then, its a snake eat frog world out there.
I'm just a frog on a log in a bog raising a pollywog. Once my daughter gets old enough she'll definitely be harvesting some pollywogs to raise as pets until they turn into frogs.
Meanwhile in the air there were plenty of indigo buntings around. I'm sure they have all established nests by now.
The males like to sit high up in the tree and brag about their territory. I rarely ever see the female indigo buntings, or maybe I just mistake them for small statured sparrows.
Speaking of small here is a blue gray gnatcatcher harvesting spider web for a nest. It basically spins the spider silk around its beak and brings it back to make a hummingbird sized nest that it can paste tiny lichen and leaves to via the spiderweb.
It has plenty of material to work with as this lookout platform structure was loaded down with grass spider webs. I find these little bluegray gnatcatcher are quite tame. If you happen to hear them just stand still for a while and they'll be bouncing around in the branches right next to you eventually.
That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
Great you went a bit further south this time.
Beautiful captures… but seeing so many snakes… oh they would freak me out hahaha 🤣
Don’t like them at all. Still awesome captures of them.
Have a great Wednesday 👋🏻😊
Fortunately all these snakes are non venomous, a bit further south I would be seeing timber rattlesnakes and cottonmouths, possibly even copperheads. There's a place here called snake road that has one of the world's largest snake migrations in the world. I still havent found time to see it yet...
That’s good they are non venomous. But still hehehe 🤭
Yes, you don’t want to disturb those.
You want to go and see them migrate… wow… hope you can do one day. I will check out the photos from a safe place behind my screen hahaha 🤣!LOL I would run a mile… so to speak irl.

Then they call me ugly and poor.

I'm from arizona what can I say lol. We had snakes everywhere over there so I had to learn which were safe and which were not. Now over here snakes are much more rare so its fun actually finding any.
Yep, I fully understand. Being surrounded with them. You learn.
Must be fascinating in some way.
Glad you do see some once in a while when it’s fun.
You got some great photos of the creatures and that is one big snake, yikes!
Some had to be a good 6ft long. Most were small though.
snakes frogs birds such cool things you spotted on your walk loved seeing all your photos
Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk :)
I hope to find the nest of the blue gray gnatcatcher super tiny and intricate.
It's amazing that your trip this time, you get some really beautiful shots.
I'm glad to see you can get some snake-type shots.
You are great @sketch.and.jam
If I know they aren't venomous I try and catch them. These ones were all in the swamp so I couldn't catch them lol.
Yes I know, a few months ago in your previous post, you also played with snakes, it was really cool😁😁
Nice photos 👍 happy #wednesdaywalk 🙂 nice captures of the snakes. I love snakes but am a bit squeamish about water snakes. I don't like that they are usually in water that you can't really see down into. And my ID skills aren't that sharp because I don't see them that much. Water moccasins scare me.
Yeah I've had a couple close calls with moccasins swimming next to me in a river. They at least warn you while on land but in the water they just go wherever they want.
Wow, what a variety of animals you found on your walk, I don't think I would have ever come close to photographing those snakes, if there is something I am very afraid of it is snakes, since my mother was bitten by one when I was a child and I saw her suffering with the venom, they almost amputated her toe. Since then in my nightmares there is always a snake! 😖
Spectacular images! ✨
Yeah its a good instinct to be afraid of snakes, but once you learn the ones in your area then its not too scary. Fortunately now they rarely kill unless you're in australia lol.
I have heard that Australia is home to the most dangerous animals on earth, but I would still love to visit that country. :-D
I always get fear whenever I see snake. You are really brave to observe these snakes and other reptiles
For me its roaches that gives me that fear lol.
What cool post! Snakes, and frogs and indigo buntings and spider web swiping bitty birds...
I really love the little blue gray gnatcatchers. I have a photo of their nest somewhere, they just paste them on a branch with most of it made out of spider web.
