Fungi Friday - Lots of UFOs

Here are some UFOs from Missouri for this #fungifriday
20211024_125117_copy.jpg
I found some strange looking orange mushrooms with a nice even edge blend to white. I thought maybe they were sulfur tufts at first but those don't have such a dark orange color to them.

The clumps they grow in also remind me of armillaria (honey mushrooms) but I've never seen one in this color.

I flipped one over and noticed not ring around the stem and they have nice symmetrical white gills. I've been searching Missouri Mushroom Observer all day trying to figure them out... still no luck...

Here is another UFO with more of a drab appearance.

20211024_124106_copy.jpg
They had a tough stem with a brittle cap and gills.

UFO #3 looks similar but I think they are a different mushroom because the gills look different and the cap is more rough.

These ones also remind me of honey mushrooms but I've never seen honey mushrooms in such a drab looking color.

Here is what the gills look like for UFO #3.

Here is UFO #4 I believe these look most like a honey mushroom possibly Armillaria tabescens. They are still very young at this age and haven't reached full maturity for a good ID.

The rough cap and yellow color seems to point to Armillaria tabescens. These are have a common name of ringless honey mushroom as there is no ring around the stem under the cap. They also have an interesting feature where their mycelium is bioluminescent. This one is said to be a choice edible but only if it is fully cooked otherwise you will get a stomach ache.

Finally one I can identify. These are some really old dried out winter mushrooms aka Flammulina Velutipes. If only had reached these a few days earlier it would have made a descent meal. Fortunately there is still a chance I might find some fresh ones as they tend to be found all the way up until the first snow in November. If not I can always buy some from the Asian supermarket where they are called Enokitake and they are skinny, long and white like a noodle because they grow them in a high Co2 environment.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

At first I didn't really like mushrooms, I preferred to photograph insects...

But after getting to know this community I seem to like the mushroom object, and after trying it I enjoy it 👏😁

And of course, your photos are absolutely beautiful 🤩👍

There are plenty of insects that love hanging around mushrooms. So you can get photos for two communities if you stumble across a mushroom.

They have to jump onto the random flies that like the smell of the mushrooms.

Thanks, I'm only certain about the last one being edible, it is a very good tasting mushroom especially in hot pot soups.

The red brick caps have a nice color. I finally figured out the first three.

If only they would keep growing in winter. I'll have to get some indoor kits and see what sorts of aliens hatch out of them maybe pink oysters again.

Fortunately I went out and found some winter mushrooms this weekend as well. Sadly not enough for a meal though.

Yeah they got the indian summer treatment, it starts getting cold here then there is a random day where it gets hot all of a sudden then cold again.
