1980 Mexico Silver Onza Balance Scale

In 1949, the Mexican Mint released the Silver Onza. With a brief resurgence between 1978 and 1980, the coins were scarcely minted in the years that followed. On both the obverse and reverse of each coin of the Mexican Silver Onza Series, there were uncomplicated designs. The Onza were made from .925 silver.

1980 Mexico 1 oz Silver Onza Balance Scale

The Mexican Silver Onza Coins have a coin press depicted on their obverse. But this isn't just ordinary coin press. It is a representation of a manually operated coin press that pays homage to the Mexican Mint's more than 400-year history.

Coin Highlights:

  • Contains 33.625 grams of .925 fine Silver for total of 1 oz of Silver.
  • Coin comes in protective packaging.
  • Dated 1979 or 1980, these bullion coins are Almost Uncirculated or better (some may have toning).
  • Obverse: "Casa de Moneda de México" and the date with an image of a screw press.
  • Reverse: Una Onza Troy de Plata Pura with a set of balance scales at center.

The reverse of the 1 oz Mexican Silver Onza features a balance scale. This type of balance scale may have been used to compare the weight of coins or weigh silver.

The coin mint called "de balancín" (of sway), was used in Mexico Mint to make their first coins. This device uses the rotation of a pole on top with weight on a side to get enough speed to force a spiral down and mint the coin (later updated to use steam and then electric motor but the method was the same). Some people think that these rounds contain more than one troy ounce of silver and are led to believe that they have scored two and a half extra grams of silver for free. The reason that these medallic pieces weigh 33.625 grams (instead of one troy ounce, 31.103 grams) is that the silver alloy used in them is, unusually, only .925 pure. 33.625 grams multiplied by .925 purity = 31.103 grams of pure silver.

Prior to the release of the .999 Silver Libertad Onza, the Mexican Onza was a big heavy coin of sterling silver.

Somehow, I personally prefer the design of the Libertad when they first come out!

They had it for two years, 1979 and 1980.
I like it because it is larger than the American Silver Eagle.
It stays in a flip, hehehe!

Nice! Did not know of this version. It is very cool.

I kind of like the new design better though. Guess I like half-clothed ladies with wings and eagles better than presses and scales :-)

Hahaha! This coin was a few years younger. Before the Libertad Onza, it was the Un Pesos.
