Vegetarian Lunch - Turnip & Chapati.

IMG_20211210_143946.png

Yesterday was some incredible day as I was free from work early and helped my mom for the lunch. We made typical Indian Turnip with chapati. It took us longer than usual since I am noob at cooking and my mother had to take longer time explaining me how to do a particular stuff but it was all worthy as I spent some quality time with her plus the food was super healthy and delicious.

Adding in food recipe is not my genre generally but @discoveringarni inspired me to write one as she usually writes about her vegan journey so, I though to try my bit in this genre.

Let's get started-
What you need-

  1. Turnips
  2. Tomato
  3. Chilli
  4. Ginger
  5. Indian khada masala
  6. Salt, chilli powder, mango powder
  7. Onion
  8. Fenugreek seeds
  9. Corn flour

Let's start cooking-

4.png

Take a cooker and soak chopped Turnips in water and keep on boiling it.
Here, multitasking will be the key. While your turnips are getting boiled, take a frying pan and prepare it for Tadka which means frying the veggies.

2.png

Chop in your veggies- Tomato, chilli and ginger.

3.png

Take a frying pan and keep it on high flame with groundnut oil and throw in some fenugreek seeds to fry and enjoy the fragrance.

5.png

Once you feel like the seeds are dark brownish, add in your chopped veggies for the preparation of tadka.

6.png
Once your veggies are cooked well, add in spices of your choice, we used Salt, chilli powder and mango powder. One can notice how the texture of veggies is changed after they are cooked nicely.

By now your turnips must be boiled well, don't forget to check them out while all these veggies were getting ready to be a tadka.

Let's get this tadka into those boiling turnips.

7.png

After adding in your fried veggies plus spices which is called "Tadka" into those already boiling turnips in cooker, just close the lid and wait for couple of whistles until your "sabzi" looks like this-

9.png

Now the most interesting part kicks in- we have to mash all our veggies with corn flour.

10.png

That's typical traditional Indian way of cooking turnips. The mash is the key here since it just accentuates the flavour.

Now we need to cook a chapati which is regular bread here so I didn't clicked pictures of it. But we love to eat this sabzi with chapati.

Serve it hot with chapati and few onions n teh side. The tangy, soft, sweet taste of turnips with chapati will make you feel fulfilled and it's super delicious.

Hope I did justice to this genre by clicking step by step pictures and wrote a detailed description, The quantity totally depends upon your choice. We made this sabzi using 5 turnips and single veggies each. Rest my mom is the main cook I just helped her in between.
This is quite healthy food the nutritious value of turnips alone are- Fibers , 10 kinds of vitamins, 6 kinds of minerals like potassium, iron, copper, calcium, potassium and manganese not just these but are also rich in protein.

Enjoy the healthy traditional Indian Turnip sabzi with chapati.

Wow, I'm getting hungry, I can just taste it in my mind the flavors of the spices and the ingredients. If I don't find turnips in the market, which other vegetables would you recommend trying this with? Potatoes?

Hi dear @discoveringarni, Thanks for the appreciation, you can surely look for potatoes in alternative of turnips. It would be a delicious dish as well.
Have an amazing weekend.
