Hello! Every Thursday, we have a space in the Topfamily community, and thanks to the thanks to the professor @lanzjoseg TBT Contest: "A Photo, A Story—One of Those Days" (July 23rd), we can share our photographic memories and tell the stories behind them. This photo has actually been entered in the contest before, though we’ve since enhanced it to bring out the details more clearly.

The funny thing is, I still wonder where I was hiding, since I don't appear in the picture. I was probably off enjoying the refreshing waterfalls or standing behind the taller people—which is why I’m not visible, haha. It captures a beautiful moment from our trip to Bolívar State; we traveled there on a bus from the Humboldt de Oriente school. On the right—the gentleman with his hands behind his back and wearing glasses—is Mr. Ramón Méndez, our driver for the trip; it really felt like one big family, especially since there were neighbors along for the ride, too. The truth is, my Aunt Ángeles—who used to be a nun—was a driving force in bringing people together.

I find that ability to travel across Venezuela and get to know the country truly wonderful. She always encouraged us to do so. Getting to know our country is part of the affection one feels for one's birthplace—that blend of Venezuelan and Spanish heritage. Thanks to that trip, we visited the Guri Dam; there, we were shown a video about the preparations made to rescue the local flora and fauna from the area slated for flooding and bring them to safety. We saw the massive turbines and the floodgates. Of course, there aren't many souvenir photos from those moments; developing a roll of film was expensive, and only the adults had cameras.

We visited Canaima Park and the La Llovizna Falls; a tragedy had occurred there when a group of people—teachers—stepped onto a suspension bridge that collapsed under their weight 60th anniversary of the teachers' tragedy at La Llovizna Park. Falling into those turbulent, churning waters meant certain death. Some survived by remaining on the ends of the bridge, but it was a terrible tragedy.

I truly still remember the impressive roar of the water and its power as it surged through the park; everything was wet and slippery, so we had to walk carefully. We children really enjoyed that outing; as cousins, we always look back on it as a real adventure in discovering our country, Venezuela.

See you on the road.
