Well, I guess I should introduce myself, my name is Ken, I'm 3 years old, I'm a German Shepherd and I'm a military dog trained specifically for combat and searching for illegal supplies. My job... To protect and assist my fellow soldiers in their missions.

I was raised in a foster family in Wisconsin. My master was a Navy veteran who lost a leg in military service. Over time he aged until his time came. The day he died, his son, "Richard Hatson," promised him to enlist in the Navy...and protect his country no matter if he died in combat.

On the day he was leaving to enlist I convinced him to let me go with him, because...if he was going to leave for good...I wanted to spend at least what little time I could with him, just as he was finishing getting ready, one of the gentlemen took the floor and said to Richard:

  • "I see you have a German Shepherd? Is it yours or someone else's?" said the registrar. I managed to observe his badge, Note that his name is "Srg. Paul Harrison."

-Richard replied firmly:

"Yes sir, he is my faithful companion. His name is Ken."

-The soldier said confidently to my master:

  • "You may enter the navy with your dog, for he is of great importance as is your service sir."

Hearing this, Richard was undecided and did not know what to do. When I realized his insecurity and saw that he was going to refuse his offer, I barked and stood on two legs, resting my two front paws on the table where the pet registration form was. It was then that Richard knew that I wanted in regardless of the danger involved.

Richard with joy, fear and insecurity? I agreed to enlist as a dog in the U.S. Navy and would serve my country regardless of my life. I knew full well that when I joined the military I would no longer have long breaks, I would no longer be the same lazy, useless dog I was before. I would become what my first owner wanted...to be a source of pride for the nation.

On February 5, 1995 I was on the second floor of a room in my master's house looking at the sky and the mountains through the window. At that moment I noticed the arrival of a uniformed man approaching the door of our house. From a distance I noticed that it was the same uniform worn by the soldier who enlisted us in the navy. I quickly went down the stairs and got to the door and started barking trying to alert my master that someone was approaching. He quickly came down from the second floor of the next room, stood in front of the front door...grabbed the handle and slowly turned it. That's when I knew...the adventure was about to begin.
