Generalmente cuando vamos de vacaciones a algún lugar solemos traernos algún "souvenir", y hace ya 15 años de nuestro viaje inolvidable en familia, un crucero por distintas islas del caribe y una de estas islas que visitamos fue Aruba, y de allí me traje un llavero súper lindo que consistía en un listón de cuero rosado con letras con pequeñas cuentas brillantes que formaban el nombre de la isla, y la verdad es que a mí me encantaba, pero por supuesto, después de mucho uso el listo de cuero se dañó, pero me negué totalmente a deshacerme de las letras.

Eventualmente las fui usando en algunos accesorios aprovechando que tienen la letra R, inicial de mi nombre, pero siempre tuve en mente volver a usarlas en su forma original.

Usually, when we go on vacation somewhere, we tend to bring back a "souvenir", and it’s been 15 years since our unforgettable family trip—a cruise through various Caribbean islands. One of the islands we visited was Aruba, and from there I brought back a super cute keychain made of a pink leather strap with letters formed by tiny sparkling beads that spelled out the island’s name. I really loved it, but of course, after a lot of use, the leather strap got damaged, but I absolutely refused to throw away the letters.

Eventually, I started using them in some accessories, taking advantage of the fact that they feature the letter R—the first letter of my name—but I always planned to use them again in their original form.

Fue así que hace unos días se me ocurrió que podía utilizar alguna cinta en sustitución de la pieza de cuero, por la cual hacer pasar las letras, ya que son como una especie de dijes de acero con muchos brillos incrustados, y la verdad es que son unas letras súper lindas.

Además en cada extremo de la palabra traía en el mismo material unos pequeños piratas con sus espadas, así que la verdad valía la pena volver a usarlo de alguna manera, así que me puse manos a la obra, y recuperé mis letras creando un hermoso llavero muy a mi estilo. Y por aquí les comparto los materiales que utilicé y el paso paso para su elaboración.

So a few days ago, it occurred to me that I could use some ribbon instead of the leather piece to thread the letters through, since they’re like little steel charms with lots of sparkles embedded in them, and honestly, they’re super cute.

Plus, at each end of the word, there were little pirates with swords made from the same material, so it was definitely worth finding a way to reuse it. So I got to work and salvaged my letters, creating a beautiful keychain that’s totally my style. And here I’m sharing the materials I used and the step-by-step process for making it.

Paso a paso/Step by step

Como les dije, este llavero estaba compuesto por letras en acero, con incrustaciones de unos pequeños brillantes, además de 2 pequeños piratas, y en su forma original, ellas estaban en una pequeña cinta de cuerina en color rosa, pero lamentablemente con el tiempo este cuerito se fue dañando y se partió.

Por supuesto, quise conservar las letras, porque en serio son preciosas, y hace tiempo estuve ideando la manera de recuperarlo, así que pensé que sería una buena idea utilizar una cinta y colocarla de la misma forma en la que estaban en el llaver original, así que el primer paso es hacer pasar todos los dijes por la cinta de color lila.

As I told you, this keychain was made up of steel letters with small rhinestones embedded in them, plus two little pirates. Originally, they were attached to a small pink faux leather strap, but unfortunately, over time, the leather got damaged and broke.

Of course, I wanted to keep the letters because they’re truly beautiful, and I’d been thinking for a while about how to restore it. So I thought it would be a good idea to use a ribbon and arrange them the same way they were on the original keychain. The first step is to thread all the charms onto the lilac ribbon.

Seguidamente vamos a doblar la cinta, creando una especie de asa, y la cortamos del largo de la palabra formada por los dijes dejando aproximadamente 2 centímetros y medio para doblar y hacer el ojal por donde vamos a introducir esta asa en el aro del llavero.

Next, we’ll fold the ribbon to form a sort of loop, and cut it to the length of the word spelled out by the charms, leaving about 2.5 centimeters to fold and create the loop through which we’ll thread this loop onto the keyring.

Una vez que hemos cortado nuestra cinta lo que haremos será utilizar el yesquero para sellar las puntas de la cinta y evitar así se dañe con el uso,y listo este paso con ayuda de la pistola de silicon vamos a doblar y pegar el extremo que sobresale de la cinta para crear la especie de ojal para hacer pasar la cinta por el aro del llavero tal como ven en la imagen que les muestro a continuación.

Once we’ve cut the ribbon, we’ll use the tape dispenser to seal the ends of the ribbon and prevent them from fraying with use. Once that’s done, using the hot glue gun, we’ll fold and glue the protruding end of the ribbon to create a loop through which to thread the ribbon through the keyring, as shown in the image below.

De esta forma tenemos lista la pieza principal de nuestro llavero y lo que hacemos es pasarla por el aro que vamos a utilizar y está lista la parte inicial.

Now that we have the main part of our keychain ready, we simply thread it through the ring we’re going to use, and the first part is done.

Ahora, a continuación, lo que hice fue crear un pequeño colgante que como saben a mí me encantan este tipo de piezas en los accesorios, así que decidí hacer uno para mi llavero, para de esta forma hacerlo mucho más llamativo.

Para ello decidí utilizar un pompón, un corazón en acero que también tiene su historia, ya que formaba parte de un collar que me envió mi hermana desde España hace unos cuantos años, y en él se encuentran grabadas las palabras "te amo por siempre", y por supuesto, era algo de lo que tampoco me iba a deshacer, por lo que decidí utilizarlo para este llavero, junto con 2 cristales de swarovski en tonos que combinan con los colores que ya estoy usando.

Next, what I did was create a small pendant—as you know, I love this kind of detail in accessories—so I decided to make one for my keychain to make it stand out even more.

For this, I decided to use a pompom and a steel heart that also has its own story, since it was part of a necklace my sister sent me from Spain a few years ago, and the words "I love you forever" are engraved on it, and of course, it was something I wasn’t going to part with either, so I decided to use it for this keychain, along with two Swarovski crystals in shades that match the colors I’m already using.

Lo primero que hice fue usar la pequeña cadena de eslabones que trae el aro del llavero y conectar a ella en el extremo inferior el pompón, y seguidamente tomé el corazón y por los orificios por donde pasaba la cadena hice pasar una argolla de acero también, y con ayuda de la pinza la abrí y la coloqué en uno de los eslabones de la cadena del llavero y, seguidamente, procedí a cerrarla muy bien.

The first thing I did was take the small chain that comes with the keyring and attach the pompom to the bottom end of it, then I took the heart and threaded a steel ring through the holes where the chain had been, and using the pliers, I opened it and placed it on one of the links of the keyring chain, and then proceeded to close it securely.

Lo siguiente que hice fue crear el dije con los cristales, y para ello utilicé un alfiler plateado, pasé las dos piezas de cristales de swarovski, corté el excedente del alfiler y con la pinza redonda creé un "ojito", el cual conecté a otro eslabón de la cadena.

Next, I made the charm with the crystals. To do this, I used a silver pin, threaded the two Swarovski crystals onto it, cut off the excess pin, and used round-nose pliers to create a "loop", which I attached to another link in the chain.

Finalmente hice pasar esta pieza por el aro del llavero, y de esta forma está listo mi llavero recuperado, súper lindo y bastante coqueto.

Finally, I threaded this piece through the keyring, and now my refurbished keychain is ready—it’s super cute and quite charming.
