Good To Use VST2 or VST3???

The term VST must be well-known to music engineers. Because VST is used to help with work every day. Even today, a music engineer would be unable to create anything without the use of VST.

Before we get into the meat of what I wrote in the title, let's define VST.

Virtual Studio Technology (VST) is an audio plug-in software interface that integrates software synthesizers and effects units into digital audio workstations.

The Steinberg company invented VST in 1996, and it was released alongside the Steinberg Cubase 3.02 DAW. VST had only Reverb, Chorus, Stereo Echo, and Auto-Panner plugins when it first came out. Then, in 1999, Steinberg released VST 2.0, which included new features such as the ability to read MIDI file data. It was updated to VST 2.4 in 2006, with the ability to run on 64-bit computers. VST 3.0 was released in 2008, and it is still being updated in 2011, 2013, 2017, and even today.

There were no virtual instruments prior to the development of the VST. A Music Engineers must use a SoundFont, sampling, or the sound on a musical keyboard if you want to use a midi instrument.

Steinberg was a pioneer in the development of VST. The website (which I read in March 2021) explains some of the benefits of VST3, such as: •

  • VST3 performs better
  • VST3 outperforms VST2 in terms of performance, according to Steinberg.
  • Multiple Dynamic I/O
  • If VST2 plugin inputs and outputs are limited, VST3 plugin inputs and outputs are greater. These inputs and outputs can also be altered as required. If the same VST3 plugin is placed on a stereo channel, for example, it will be stereo. If it's on the Surround channel, it'll be multichannel, and so on. This means that if you want to create multiple inputs and outputs, it is now easier to do so.
  • Activating/Deactivating Busses
  • Buses created in VST3 can be disabled to save computer performance. If the activated bus on VST2 remains active even if it is not used, this does not happen on VST3.
  • VST3 can be resized screen display
  • The display size of the plugin being worked on can be enlarged or reduced, making the work process easier.
  • Automation is very precise
  • When you create automation, the automation is made up of sample points. As an illustration, there will be 48 thousand dots if you make 48 kHz.
  • The plugins have been classified into categories
  • VST3 plugins are organized into categories within the DAW, making it easier to find the plugins you require.

Of course, if we look at all of the reviews above, we immediately conclude that VST3 is superior to VST
The answer is "not always true".

Actually, the VST3 specifications on the Steinberg website are only suggestions for plugin developers (Plugin Developer). These specifications can only be considered rules for plugin developers, but in reality, not all Plugin Developers adhere to them. Finally, even though it is labeled VST3, the plugin still has the VST2 feature. It's just that VST3 was designed to be detected by DAWs that support VST3.

Craig Anderton clarifies a few points on the sweet water website. Craig wrote several myths about VST2 and VST3. Among them are the following:

  • Myth: VST3 is more efficient than VST2
  • Craig argues that VST3 is not always superior to VST2. Craig's possible reason is the same as someone who says VST2 is better than VST3 when comparing it to VST3 whose features do not follow the predetermined rules.
  • Myth: VST3 is ineffective because it is inefficient
  • Craig is also of the opinion that this is incorrect. Because, according to Craig, if there is no incoming data, VST3 will not be active. As a result, it can save more RAM or processor power.

Craig is in a neutral position in both of the preceding cases. Craig disagreed when someone said that VST3 was unquestionably more efficient. Craig, on the other hand, disagrees when someone claims that VST3 is inefficient.

  • Myth: VST3 is even more problematic
  • Craig stated that VST3 has decades of programming experience, proving that it is free of serious flaws. And decades is a long time to make advancements and improvements.
  • Myth: VST3 was created so that VST2 would not be used
  • VST2 is still in use, and some people use old DAWs that don't support VST3.
  • Myth: VST3 includes more features
  • Craig's response is, as we previously discussed, that it depends on the VST development whether or not it makes extensive use of features.

So, if you believe that VST2 is more efficient, please use it; however, if you believe that VST3 is more efficient, you should also use it. However, as technology advances, DAW developers will most likely develop features in their software that follow the latest VST and may discontinue support for the old VST. Similarly, if you use a DAW that only supports VST2 (not VST3), you can only use VST2.

That is the best explanation I can give (in my opinion) to a beginner music engineer like myself, and hopefully, it will be a consideration and answer if you have any questions about the differences between VST2 and VST3.

It's like any other software development. The new versions are going to solve some problems but the older ones bring us stability and confidence. For example, I love my old Nexus vst pluging. Good work man, keep it up.

Vst is not a soundcard, but software (plugin) that you can apply to your project. Tell our friends to start posting
