Chasing Sun Rise at Mount Bromo

Saturday, 2022-12-17

Here's my entry for the #monomad challenge.

feat (1).jpg

Following are some photos from our trip to visit Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (BTSNP) last November 25. Our goal was to catch the sunrise from the Penanjakan 1 monitoring station, but the weather was not friendly. It had been raining since the previous afternoon, and sure enough, at dawn the following day, the sky was still covered with thick clouds, so the sunrise view was obstructed.

To visit BTSNP, we had to rent a 4-wheel drive Jeep managed by local residents. The road to Penanjakan is very dangerous, apart from the very steep inclines, the roads are narrow with lots of sharp turns.

One of the designated places (Penanjakan 2) is filled with people enthusiastically waiting since dawn to catch a glimpse of sunrise.

Even though we missed the sunrise due to a cloudy morning, we still enjoy the view of the highest volcano on Java island, Mount Semeru which had just erupted last December 4.

Local residents sell Javanese Edelweiss (Anaphalis javanica) flowers which are widely cultivated in the Mount Bromo area.

We left from Penanjakan 1 station at around 5:30 before a traffic jam occurred caused by people coming down together to the crater of Mount Bromo which is savanna and desert.

Where there is sugar, there are ants. Markets, food stalls, and souvenir items sellers can also be found here. Horseback riding is also one of the businesses managed by the local community to bring tourists to the foot of the crater which is approximately 3 km through the desert.

Horses for rent mingled with the modern 4-wheel drive jeeps... what a view!

All photos were taken using Sony ILCE-6000, E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS, except the man selling Edelweiss (Xiaomi 11T Pro).
